News / Goodbye Sunday Shopping in Poland - Hello Electoral Reform [246]

Why don't you post them here then, please?
You usually don't have a problem with it.
I'm tired with this discussion. So ... if post anything supporting your claim, I will definitely read it and comment on it. If you don't do it, it will be clear you're making things up again.

Honestly, it's pretty clear to me and everyone else already.

Travel / Warsaw weather in april? [13]

It's too early to say. Check the weather forecast before you come.
Didn't you say you are from Italy?

@cms neuf
Or they may save the money till the next Sunday when Ikea, Agata or brw are open. Or shop online.
I didn't mean to question your parenting skills. You managed to entertain the kids somehow.
I happen to be a working person, too. I'm planning to redecorate the flat in a couple of months. I'll face some problems for sure. Will they be any smaller if I complain about it here?

@Dougpol
It's not about decision making. Grumbling online isn't decision making.

As for me, so far, so good. I managed to do most of the shopping in the week. I just had to buy some veggies on Saturday.

On Sunday it turned out I didn't have a spare light bulb. I borrowed one from my parents.
It turned out I didn't have to go and buy it (and lots of other useless things). I keep wondering if we'll get back to situations I remember from my childhood: a neighbour asking 'Pani Xyz, pożyczy Pani szklankę mąki? ' ;)

@jon357
You need to remind me. A link?
If it happened, it should be online.
If you can't provide a link, I will be sure you're making things up again.

An MP being hypocritical???? No way!
It's not the first or last time.

@Sparks11
You don't really need to visit Ikea every weekend. As for groceries, make a list before you go. Don't wander around idly, just get things you need. You will save time.

@cms neuf
You keep kids busy by taking them shopping?

I'm not a fan of the reform. I see a lot of drawbacks. But what will grumbling change?

Genealogy / Finding Lech family from Wisloczek/Canada [16]

Were your family Lemkos?
According to what I have found online, most of the village inhabitants were Lemkos. They were deported to Ukraine during Operation Vistula and their houses were taken down.

Present day inhabitants are Protestant settlers from Zaolzie.
There are remains of the Greek Orthodox Church and the cementary, though.

I do!
He told me to pretend it didn't happen. And I am!
But deep in my heart I know he's right. He always knows best. Even if he has nothing to support his claims.

Seriously speaking, freedom of speech is one thing, the laws of libel and slander another. But perhaps I'm wrong. I might gave googled wrong words or bloody Poles manipulated Google search results.

News / Goodbye Sunday Shopping in Poland - Hello Electoral Reform [246]

Honestly speaking, I liked shopping on Sundays. I'm often tired after work so Sunday shopping was just fine. But I'll have to get used to what we have now. Some more people will have a rest on Sundays.

Since most big shops are open 7-21 six days a week, there's enough time to do shopping.
I just hope the reform won't negatively influence supermarket workers.
I haven't heard about any scandal with Teraz Polska but since it's got Polska in its name, there must have been some, right, Jon? Tell me all about it.

There are some good memes about the reform, BTW ;)

I wouldn't tell difference between different types of vodka either.
That brand of pasta is pretty popular here. I don't buy it, though.
I doubt you'd see it at Biedronka- they usually sell their own stuff there.
I don't go to my local Kaufland. I don't like it there. You obviously got your pasta.
There used to be an action called Teraz Polska that promoted Polish producers but that doesn't mean they got rid of other producers.
For example, I haven't been able to get olej kujawski at my local Auchan but I don't suspect conspiracy behind it.
When it comes to the reform, we just need to wait and see.

Genealogy / Polish and gypsy traditions [64]

Marriages are often arranged in Gypsy families. No premarital sex - at least not with a woman they want to marry. The kidnapping thing is basically about it.

They often have their Gypsy wedding in their teens.

Not only Poles. Some foreigners can tell if you're Polish, too.
That doesn't change the fact that there are people of different height, hair and eye colour in Poland.

Since neither Poland nor Hungary (afaik) had colonies or slavery, it's not surprising there are mostly white people there.
Life here is often a struggle so we don't attract too many immigrants either.
Should we force people to move here?
Lyzko, there aren't too many Jews here. Why don't you give up your life in the US and move here so that we're more ethnically, diverse?

Are American Jews racially diverse or are they also mosty white?
To sum up, most Polish people are of European origin but that doesn't mean we all look the same. The same applies to Hungarians.

Restaurants, cinemas, petrol stations etc are still open on Sundays. I doubt people hired there get higher wages. Hospitals, the police, bus drivers etc still have to work, too. They also have families.

I'm not sure it's about the Church either.
And as I said, people either choose to spend quality time with their families or not.

I survived last Sunday. I'm going to miss Sunday shopping but I'll have to get used to it. As for more time with the family, if you want to spend time together, you do regardless of Sunday shopping.

In reality lots of people had to go to work anyway.

I totally agree. Similarly to Polish people, I have met Hungarians with really fair hair and complexion as well as people with really dark hair and considerably dark complexion. And all the shades in between.

Language / It is not possible to translate names into English or Polish! [52]

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanda

Wanda was a daughter of king Krak, the legendary founder of Kraków. It's pronounced /vanda/ in Polish and it was quite popular in the 20th century.

I don't know it's male equivalent.

Language / What does Janina translate into in English? [27]

Quite a popular name back in the day, I suppose. I didn't get to know my grandma. She had passed away years before I was born. She was beautiful but she had a really tough life.

I guess your niece simply feels British. She probably doesn't know Poland. She may feel differently about her origins later.

@Chemikiem
I think you can add Johanna to the list and many more. ;)

@AnielaMaria
I guess the Passport Office should be more precise. If they say it's not the proper translation, they should say what is.
