UK, Ireland / My bad experiences with Polish neighbours in UK (not meant to offend) [173]

true, generally Poles live in their own ghettos

I do not think that ghetto is the right word.
A 'ghetto' was eg the Warsaw ghetto in WW2.
Of course there are areas where nationalities gather.
In London the Turks are in Green Lanes and Hackney, the Portuguese tend to live Stockwell/Vauxhall/Brixton, and traditionally the Irish gathered in Camden Town, and the (old) Poles in West London for some reason. None of these places are /were 'ghettos'!

Food / Why Poles not like rice? [95]

like 'the states'? yes we use that here, too, mostly. ..:)

I do get sick of being told we are 'tonto' or ignorant or whatever , usually by Spanish speakers. They call us 'Anglo Sajons' fgs but I too polite to complain.:):):)

Rice is a bit alien to the Northern Diet. We eat a lot of it in the UK, but only because of our colonial past and obsession with curry.

freaking ignorants those who use the term America and mean a country.

it IS America though, to us. Do I have to apologise for not being Spanish or something?

Language / Short Polish<->English translations [1049]

transliteration means when eg .a language with a different writing system has the words put into an understandable form for people who use a standard western alphabet..

eg 'Beijing' (used to be Peking, anyone remember? now they use a different transliteration method).
sorry I can never resist the temptation to be a smartarse..:)

Literal translation can be amusing though. Here in Wales, the literal translation for 'I have a son' is 'there is a son by/with me'. INteresting insight into different national mentalities. I digress though.

Does anyone know any little phrases like that in Polish , which literally translated show a different mentality?

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1090]

" There is no actually no consensus about the exact centre of Europe "

maybe not, but we had a wonderful history teacher who used to poke at the 'Urals' on the map with her ruler and say 'remember children, Europe ends here!!'.

So by her definition, Poland would be pretty much in the centre of Europe wouldn't it?

(She also would call the Germans 'Germs' and Mao Tse Tung 'Mousy Dung'...:)

Life / Can someone tell me about the reason behind being gay in Poland being wrong [148]

that is fine. I know I am right. If you are that bothered do a study on it, you know with control groups and x/y coefficient, ANOVA tests, the lot.

I only suggest this as you are obviously so fascinated by it all. Like I said, men who are comfortable in their sexuality don't find the need for all this. :)

We have some lovely gay bars and areas in London, would you like directions?

" All homophobic people are gay? Another smart quote."

yes I would agree that in my life observations the homophobes are those who feel uneasy with their own sexuality, tbh.
Closet gays the lot of them. Men who are comfortable with their sexuality don't feel the need protest about 'gay' quite so much.

Work / English teachers in Poland - why are they so unhappy? [89]

Actually Dominic rates of alcoholism DO vary between countries, with it being more prevalent in Europe the further north you go.
So for example a Greek who drinks heavily has less chance of becoming an alcoholic than a person from Britain or Ireland, as we have only been drinking beer for a 1000 years or so, while wine has been drunk in Greece for millenia. So the Greek or Italian will be more immune to alcoholism.

native Americans and aboriginal Australians did not stand a chance when the white man brought 'fire water' over as they did not have alcohol at all.

Fascinating eh?
But back to the topic, I was perfectly happy to teach English in Poland ...:) and no I am NOT an alcoholic, thanks.
What happened to you Dom? You sound so bitter and sour and unpleasant these days.

News / Nazi gold train 'found in Poland' [90]

readers' comments repugnant?

yes they are, which is a shame, as this is just the kind of story that the DM does really well.

Life / Polish people are the most ignorant people in the world! [335]

99.99% of Americans don't know anything about the outside world

wild exaggeration.
There are stupid people from every country in the world. Just that AMerica is bigger so there are proportionally more of them.
I have also found French people to be extrememly insular and unadventurous, but I would not be so arrogant as to apply this to the general population..:)

I dont find Polish people "ignorant" either, but I am not really sure which definition of "ignorant" you are applying.

Life / Single mothers in Poland [175]

But why think up extreme situations except for the sake of polemic?

well, that is a good question - why DO you do it? :)

Life / Single mothers in Poland [175]

er no P., he was saying that a boy brought up by a single mother is no more likely to be gay than one brought up by a married couple.

Your imagination on what other people are 'saying' is very fertile isnt it?

as there is only about one 'out' gay man on PF, P>, that is incredibly offensive.
Anyway it is rubbish, sons of single mothers are no more likely to become gay than sons of two parents living together.
I must say I was pretty relieved that my son was free to experiment and have a laugh by slipping on one of his sister's dresses - his dad would have gone seriously, damagingly mental.

I think that single mothers should have their children placed into a state nursery, their heads shaved, and they should be forced to wear bright orange jumpsuits and clean the streets with a toothbrush.

F.ucking slags.

Life / Single mothers in Poland [175]

" unemployed unwed mothers, children from broken homes, substance-abusing drivers, speeders, school dropouts, burglars, etc. obviously impacts every country "

'My home is not 'broken' thank you, it is perfectly functional.
You do know how offensive you are don't you?

Only a masochist could come here day after day to take the abuse he does.

Jon is one of the few people here who is 'out' as a gay man and is willing to challenge lazy stereotypes and unthinking nastiness.

So I see him more as brave than 'masochistic'.
What were you wittering about socialism? is he for it or against it? Your writing is very unclear.
