History / Churchill and Poland [120]

Look, German producers have signed the film at the end of it (see above). If "GmbH" is not German, then what it is? If NDR is not German, then what it is?

LOOKS Film & TV GmbH have their own website and at their entry in the Wiki they tell you that the company is "eine deutsche Filmproduktionsfirma. Sie entwickelt, produziert und vertreibt Dokumentarfilme, Spielfilme sowie Serien für VoD, Kino und Fernsehen".

If a film is aimed at an international audience, it may well use English-language maps rather than German-language (or Polish-language for that matter) ones in the same way as they use the English-speaking voice of the narrator. Here below is the link to their website. On the website there is shown the film in question - under the title: CHURCHILLS VERRAT AN POLEN DER MYSTERIÖSE TOD DES GENERAL SIKORSKI.

Ist jetzt alles klar, BB?

Not in a german production...that's English! :)

It is a German production which uses the English language rather than German. So 'Deutsches Reich' becomes 'German Reich'.

So it may be a kind of an international production, but German participation seems to be the most significant.

At the end of the film stands: "A production by LOOKS Film & TV GmbH" and then "In coproduction with NDR" [NDR = Norddeutscher Rundfunk].

The film seems to be a German production (NDR) of 2011.

Yes, and that was a state encompassing Poland, Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine.

Indeed, but one must remember there were clearly two distinct states there rather than one until the year 1791 having been united in certain respects only (even armed forces were separate). There existed a strong national Lithuanian identification among members of the ruling class within the Grand Duchy understood as a political entity. This had nothing to do either with ethnicity or with language or denomination. Many of the gentry were Orthodox who next converted to Catholic. The majority, if not all, spoke Lithuanian or Ruthenian (as they called it then) at home and over generations the upper classes turned to Polish. Thus Adam Mickiewicz was strongly inscribed in that context, so it was natural for him to describe himself as "Lithuanian" even if the family spoke Polish at home. He couldn't see a slightest contradiction between being Polish and Lithuanian at the same time. He would strongly protest, however, against calling him a Crowner (Koroniarz), a term applied to those living in the former Kingdom of Poland (Crown) with the lands of Ruthenia (now Ukraine) detached from the Grand Duchy and adjoined to the Kingdom in 1569. The term 'Poland" slowly came into popular (but not official!) usage as the term meaning both units of the entity, the Grand Duchy and the Kingdom, seen together as one. And this is why Adam Mickiewicz thought of himself as being Polish, too.

Yes, Adam Mickiewicz is a very interesting case with regard to his ethnicity. I'm afraid it can only be understood fully in the perspective of the reality of the then Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Unfortunately, the majority of people of our time tend to look at it from today's perspective and every one of them or every group may arrive at different, often conflicting conclusions.

Tell them something on the wrongdoings of PiS and they will immediately tell you all about the wrongdoings of PO. But the 2015 election should have brought change to Polish politics, a good change!

So what change is it if we now and again have PiS politicians in the steps of politicians they wanted to wipe out from the Polish political scene because of their not very good deeds?

Is it JPII statue?

The man in the statue is too tall for JP II. I'd say it's cardinal Wyszyński.

Do you think I know all chapels in Polish cemeteries?? :):) I have no idea.

This is a very interesting chapel indeed. I've never seen such a big one in a Polish cemetery. My guess it is somewhere in Podkarpackie or Małopolskie.

Only once did the local sanitary -epidemiological station closed the pool after such a ceremony.

This was because he jumped into in full dress, tie and shoes included, I think it was those shoes which irritated the SANEPID so much.

Not that I am interested in taking the offer up, but $30 for the translation of a 43 minute long video doesn't seem that much. Or maybe only a few words is uttered in there?

Day-to-day management was up to the locals.

Oh yes, at that time we could vote those "locals" out of office very easily, just like they used to do in Germany and the USA (... at this point I laugh wholeheartedly just as Mr Brezhnev did on BBC Radio 4 in 1981...) hahahahahahaha

E.g., read about June 1956 crisis.

Gomułka and other party officials managed to convince Khruschtshev of not ordering the Red Army to move into Poland at very the last moment in 1956.

the Soviets were already involved in Afghanistan (with all international repercussions) and should still wait and see what happened in Poland

I remember a joke in some satirical programme on BBC Radio 4 at that time (1981):

- Mr Brezhnev, what do you think of the American invasion in (here the name of some place is mentioned, but I can't remember what it was)?

- The Soviet Union condems it utterly. And in this condemnation we have the support of the people of Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Afghanistan and next week I hope to have the support of the people of Poland as well .... hahahahahaha (Leonid Brezhnev laughs wholeheartedly).

Kaczyński was destroyed by Kidawa-Błońska in Warsaw

He was defeated by her in Żoliborz (quel joli bord! - exclaimed in the 17th century Marysieńska Sobieska when travelling along the Vistula river in a ship on seeing the bank of the river where Żoliborz is now situated), the districk of Warsaw he originates from.

any ammendements made by senat can be rejected by sejm

But this is a little bit more difficult. The so-called absolute majority is needed for that. Actually, it seems that PiS will have absolute majority in the new Sejm

News / "POLISH death camps" term used by "Parade Magazine" Anti-Polish Bigots [249]

the most important ones were Austrian!(I think I fear them more than Germans!)

Contrary to the common belief that Adolf Hitler was Austrian, he always felt and described himself as German, even if technically he was an Austrian-born failed painter.

BB, there are tons of material on Hitler and the Third Reich in Polish e-bookshops (mostly tranlations from foreign authors) and on TV subject channels (National Geographic, Discovery, ViaSat History and such like) these days. Is that "Hitlermania" also present in Germany?

I am not as sure as you are that Germans have truly learnt that lesson yet.

history.[...] has a nasty tendency to repeat itself

It seems they truly have. Irrespectively of what one political group or another in Germany may say, the vast majority of Germans have now comfortably placed themselves on the side of peace and stability (and has stopped thinking about ever searching for this infamous Lebensraum in Eastern Europe). In this respect Germany may now resemble the change that occured to Sweden in the past. As we know, Sweden was for more than a century the biggest warmonger and aggressor in Europe, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, but after that it has slided into being one of the most peace-orientated countries in the world. Many historians draw a parallel between the course Sweden took in the past and the course Germany has taken after 1945 and is sticking to it all the time.

unremitting hostility to Germany and German citizens

Given all the atrocities the Germans committed in Eastern Europe, which were far more brutal than in Western Europe, one may say that such hostility towards Germany, particularly among those directly affected, may persist for yet many years ahead.

I'm sure it will inevitably happen which means both will happen: the recession and blaming PO for it. This has been predicted already in a song by Wojciech Młynarski of which I am quoting an excerpt:

Pociąg spóźnił się do Buska - wina Tuska.
Podupada kurort Ustka - wina Tuska.
Groch się jakoś marnie łuska - wina Tuska.
W Totku Ci nie wyszła szóstka - wina Tuska.

My prediction is that if Jarosław Kaczyński (at the present moment: Our Dear Leader Chairman Jarosław Kaczyński) decides to leave the political scene in Poland, the PiS party will fall into pieces pretty quickly.
