A new law on rape has just been passed in Poland. The old one had been in force since 1932. Almost 100 years. Incredible.

According to the new definition, rape is causing another person to have sexual intercourse by force, unlawful threat, deceit or in any other way despite the lack of consent. The regulation, which changed the definition of rape in the Penal Code, came into force on Thursday.

The key change in the amendment concerns Article 197, paragraph 1 of the Penal Code. The previous provision in the Penal Code read: "whoever, by force, unlawful threat or deceit, induces another person to engage in sexual intercourse, shall be subject to the penalty of imprisonment for a term of between two and 15 years".

The provision was therefore supplemented, among other things, by "lack of consent".

I remember one scene from grade 6 (Russian class started in grade 5) - our female teacher of Russian screams at one boy (two years older than me coz he had repeated twice) coz he is unable to read the Russian text. She was very toxic as a teacher and we were all fed up with her. That negative experience put me off studying Russian in a more profound way. I just didn`t care to know it better - I could read and write Cyrillic and it sufficed well.

BTW, that teacher was the wife of our local dentist, a good specialist, a quiet and unassuming man.
