Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

Daberkow probably comes from the village name.

Almost certainly. Until approx. the late 16th century it was widespread that people were named after the location they were born in or came from.

You think they were German?

There's a very good chance because the area had been Prussian/German for many centuries before it came to Poland in 1945.

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

If you don't stick to the original names of towns and villages that were in use when your ancestors were alive, you will never be successful with your research.

My ancestors came from Płoty

Your ancestors came from Plathe an der Rega, Kreis Regenwalde, Deutsches Reich. Some of the churchbooks are available at the LDS.

They were originally from a village called Dobrkowo

They were originally from a village called Daberkow.

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

as well

As well? I know that they made fun of Kohl because he used "dieses unser Vaterland" on various occasions, but I've never seen your version of "Dieses unsere Vaterland". The latter sounds like Turkish-German, to be honest, and I really wonder where you dug that up. Any source?

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

When last in Germany, a twenty-something year-old chap confronted me and asked why I bother speaking to him in German. After throwing a few verses of Christian Morgenstern at him, I then asked the astounded fellow whether he'd ever even heard of W.S Gilbert of the "dynamic duo" of Gilbert & Sullivan. After much hemming and hawing he confessed he hadn't. So much for his English LOL

Why do you have to brag about your supposedly superior German language skills all the time, dude?

Speaking of...

an especially questionable grammatical usage in German "Dieses unsere Vaterland..."

... the statement he made in 1975 was "dieses unser Vaterland". There's a slight, but important difference... :)

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

FWIW... :)
You can argue as much as you want, Wlodzimierz, but "Lernt ihr Polnisch nicht!" is still wrong. Also, although grammatically possible, no native speaker would use "Ich spreche nicht Englisch" to imply that (s)he cannot speak but is able to write the language. The correct way would be "Ich kann Englisch nicht sprechen" (aber ich kann es schreiben) or "Ich spreche kein Englisch" (aber ich bin in der Lage, es zu schreiben). "Ich spreche nicht Englisch" means that you refuse to speak English.

History / Differences between Poland and Russia [43]

It isn't always lobbying by an ethnic group that gets its ancestral homeland's history included in curricula, and it most certainly isn't the case with respect to Polish history.

My question is legit - just think of Texas and the evolution/creationism debate there. If the lobby is strong enough you can get almost everything into the school books nowadays.

Are you really sure that you know this for a "fact"?

I've heard rumors that there are people out there who have kids in highschool... :)

What about Japan?

First world country, but different culture than the "west".

History / Differences between Poland and Russia [43]

The partitions of Poland are mentioned in high school history classes in the United States and the textbooks used often include a famous political cartoon, of the time, depicting three fat and ugly caricatures of the partitioning powers.

Thanks for reposting without the crap, Des. This can't be countrywide, because I know for a fact that there are highschools in CA, OR and WA which do not teach the partitions in their history classes/ curriculum. Where did you go to school? Chicago by any chance?

History / Differences between Poland and Russia [43]

So what are you saying?

I am saying that the proud history of Poland might not be recognized as such outside of Poland - referring to your statement that "Poland has been ... a power along with Spain, France and Hungary constituting a core of mainland Europe". Has nothing to do with propaganda in my eyes, but simply with the fact that the British Empire dominated the world for a very long time and almost any other nation outside its realm was ... well ... not really important. IMO, this attitude can still be found in the Anglo-American world to this very day. So to answer your question: almost nobody in Australia or the USA gives a hoot about German, Polish or Japanese history - unless we talk about WW1 and WW2 of course.

History / Differences between Poland and Russia [43]

what do you mean by "west"?

The standard definition: European countries on the other side of the former Iron Curtain, plus USA, Canada, Australia and NZ.

Interestingly though, except when talking about WW2, Poland is never mentioned in history classes in the west as far as I know. Spain, Britain, France and some other old nations, yes ... Poland, no.

History / Future of Kaliningrad Oblast - is it possible to annex by Poland or will it become an independent country? [137]

there is nothing to `give back` to Germany by Russia.

That's not what I said, Crow - read again.

theguardian.com/commentisfree/2010/jul/31/kalingrad-kant-home-return-german

Quote:
"The offer had been made in a secret telegram sent to the German embassy in Moscow, by one of the senior Soviet generals at the time, Geli Batenin."

And regarding your idea of a new commonwealth:
"But almost no one in Kaliningrad wants to join Germany; even fewer feel any pro-Polish or pro-Lithuanian sentiments."

Travel / Why does everyone seem to hate LOT Polish Airlines? [380]

Lufthansa wanted $3, 000!

Sounds like some travel agent tried to rip you off. At the moment, a ticket from San Francisco to Krakow goes for $1019,- .

News / Poland's new golden age : shifting from Europe's periphery to its center [29]

They could build their centers in Czech Republic.

They could, but from a logistics point of view Poland is the better location and the differences between the Czech and Polish minimum wages is only marginal.

epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/statistics_explained/images/archive/d/d2/20130912103051!MW_map_EUR_July_2013.png

Then growth will slow down. It doesn't necessarily mean that unemployment will rise.

What I meant is that you have to replace the lost jobs with something else, as it happened in western Europe in the past. What Poland needs is a solid manufacturing base and products which are competitive on the global market. As long as there are only a handful (if at all), the country will be forced to compete with others for low paying jobs. Unemployment is hidden because the young and highly educated people still leave Poland. To paint the state of the economy in rosy colors as Marcin Piatkowski did is therefore misleading.

News / Poland's new golden age : shifting from Europe's periphery to its center [29]

Amazon is just one example of this momentum.

A direct result of the strikes that hit Amazon in Germany. American companies hate unions and worker's councils. They'd rather close down a location than dealing with them.

Poland will be able to stand on her own feet

As soon as wages reach a certain threshold, most of the newly created low paying jobs as well as many better paying positions will be moved out of Poland. So on what feet will the country stand after that?

Thats perfect, what your problem?

It distracts from reality.

News / Poland's new golden age : shifting from Europe's periphery to its center [29]

Poland is exporting her unemployment while attracting low paying jobs and receiving billions of EU funds. Only when all of this has stopped and the country is able to stand on its own feet, is it time to celebrate. People like Marcin Piatkowski aren't doing Poland a favor with their glowing reports.

News / Poland and Germany should unite, says Lech Walesa [102]

You missed my point, Terry.

Little correction
Breslau is Wroclaw
Strehlen is Strzelin

Not when Haber and Erlich were born. There was no Poland at that time.

Damn, can the admin please extend the amount time that is available to edit our posts. Thanks.

There was no Poland at that time.

...on the Prussian territory that was called Schlesien, Pommern and Ostpreussen.

News / Poland and Germany should unite, says Lech Walesa [102]

The people listed above were German nationals (unless they emigrated). Some were also of Jewish faith. There's nothing more to it.

Little correction: Fritz Haber was born in Breslau, Prussia. Paul Erlich was born in Strehlen, Prussia.
