He was but after leaving a while in Poland after 1945 he deflected to the USA. Their top univ have been that kind of a neo-Marxist self-admiring circles that he was looking for.

That's the whole idea. Once the Poles are free to travel to the US, they will leave Poland.

ANY time a country's government tells you what you can and can't say,

Fine as a principle but how does that relate to the topic?

According to Czesław Miłosz,

Ah according to commie who wasn't sure whatever he is Polish or Lithuanian so he spend most of his life in the USA.

News / Poland fines singer for bashing Bible [159]

Face it, you're saying that because she insulted YOUR religion. If she had said, "I think Buddhism is completely ridiculous," we wouldn't hear a peep out of you.

You are right on your money. The fact is that she didn't say anything about Buddhism because her aim was to insult religions people care about in Poland.

That is premeditated action and for that reason I think that she should be fined.

People like me have more sense in one finger than you in your whole body. You are an atheist and yet you are keenly interested in religion,in a bad way. So you are not exactly impartial here. Yet I would defend your right to remain atheist and your right to state it publicly, I wouldn't bat an eye if somebody who insulted you on the ground of your beliefs would have been fined.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think that is what freedom of speech is all about - or it should be!
As long as you are not abusing or insulting somebody's beliefs - you should have a right to express your opinions in a non insulting way.

Example:
I think that the Bible is only full of stories which in my opinion are not true but made up by some bronze age storytellers from a desert- it is acceptable.

I think that the Bible is fukcing horrid shyte for brain washed idiots fit to be the middle-ages peasants, written by a bunch of drunken pigs - its totally unacceptable.

Also intent counts - in this case this pop-crap pretend-to-be-singer indented to insult and stir public interest and that alone should be severally punished by making her pay a huge fine - pour encourager les autres!

That singer in question done it solely for publicity and I think that should be severely punished by a much higher fine.

I'm not surprised that you are happy to insult religion as you have a beef with it.
It only shows what kind of person you are - you better stop it!

, I find it surprising that she should be fined for saying that she doesn't believe in the Bible.

For publicly talking rubbish about the Bible, not stating that she find the Bible meaningless.
\she is pop-singer without substance its all stunt for publicity - that is the reason I think she should be fined. (but she wont be )

One decides if one is offended and if one is so inclined can take great liberty with what is truly offensive and what is not.

Not quite, if someone chooses to make rude and unharnessed remarks about something that many people deem holly that is clearly offensive, no buts about that !

If somebody does it on purpose then there is no doubt in my mind that he/she should be fined.
It has nothing to do with criticizing religion and everything with respect where there is no respect there is nothing.

People say and do things all the time just to make some money.

Should they be able to make a mockery and abuse freedom of speech just to make a few bucks ?

A false comparison. She was giving her opinion on a book.

that is not a book by many is regarded as the book.
Should I then make that comparison more valid by insulting his mother or parents?
Maybe lifestyle or something he holds dear?
The point is nobody should be able to insult people or their beliefs without consequences. Sadly some people seems to think that is doesn't apply to the religion.

Meaning you can say what you think about religion or Bible but in a way that isn't insulting.
What says you ?

I can't believe she was fined as this seems a pretty blatant disregard for freedom of speech, not to mention that she's also correct.

I think that you are walking piece of trash !

How about that ? Do you regard that as my right to speak freely or do you find that offensive and insulting whether I'm right or not?

She should pay much more than 5 000 zl and so should her former lover !

Life / Babcia or Busha - any social class difference? [359]

Yes, very legitimate - so legitimate that the PWN don't recognise it as such.

It is legitimate because its derived in accordance with inner logic of the Polish language - but of course you know nothing about that.

Sorry, Ironside - but we, defenders of the Polish language,

Sorry delphiandomine- are taking the **** here ? :D

feel that the custodians of the language are far more of an authority than some Americans.

So called custodians can only describe what is the official correct language, apart from that there is a living language out there.

No, I just accept that the PWN is a far more definitive source on Polish than some dumb internet rednecks.

Look who cares what you accept or not, your Polish is too crappy to make you an expert on it. Who are you to be telling people what is and what isn't Polish ? You are only the internet upstart,a wannabe authority on all things Polish, phew!

Life / Babcia or Busha - any social class difference? [359]

Merged: Ironside's take on busha !

Because the original thread has been closed I'm going to express my opinion in this brand new thread.
Please do not contaminate this thread with trolling and ramblings, only informative posters are welcome.

Busha (busia) is a legitimate Polish word. There are two reasons for it not being widely used in Poland:
One - it is diminutive of diminutive and for Poles it is like going over the top with diminutiveness and tenderness.
Two - in the Polish language busha (busia) doesn't sound good. I mean that sounds like something a small child would say - kids talk!

On the other hand it sounds easy to pronounce for somebody from the English-speaking environment, hence its popularity.
I think that there is nothing wrong with that. (Applause )

You've made up your mind, you don't like me and think I'm the "typical arrogant american"

Not really, I think that you are simple but cleaver enough to fool me for some time I grant you that, have a fun ignoring me.

You are arguing that the USA is more attractive than Poland. You are an idiot.

Why don't you start arguing that water is wet?As I said - simple

another reason why i think Poles would be very drawn to the USA

We are not discussing whether Poles would be drawn to the USA or not but whether the Polish Government would bother to ask the USA not to include Poland in the VWP?!

So far you have provided no arguments, so I must conclude that you have nothing to support your claim.

That's a mystery to us because from what people have told me, that means that he was Jewish.

What people ? What are you talking about ? Can you be precise if you want to learn something you need to provide data not what some mysterious peeps are saying !

Genealogy / Russian Poland-what general area would this be? [30]

Does anyone know what general area this would be? He came to New York sometime between 1911 and 1920.

Find map of Poland from 1939 and then map of Poland from 1764. Compare eastern border of these two.
Area you looking for should be between eastern border of Poland from 1939 and eastern border of Poland from 1764. Good luck!

History / Mother tongue in Poland - acccording to 1931 census. [174]

Same is with Poland's politicians.

That good neighbourhood treaty included rights of both minorities - Lithuanian in Poland and Polish in Lithuania.
German minority have all rights and Polish minority in Germany doesn't simply because they are not graded as the indigenous population.
So they have no reason to demand anything.
The same goes for Lithuania if they would grant all rights (call it privileges if you like) to Polish minority, there would be no demands.

I think that Poland have been patient enough waiting 18 years for Lithuania to come to their senses but lately the Lithuanian government started to taking back some of those rights Polish minorities already enjoyed.

Your politician talk a lot of rubbish.
You also think that everything is grand ? Well, I got a news for you it isn't ! Fame ? What are you even taking about ? You yourself admitted that the issue is real.

Stop meddling about and start behaving like a grow-up!
Because really, without sympathy of Poland you have nothing going for you and nobody cares for Lithuania - that the fact!

A cat got your tongue or what?
Another fact for you to deny.

A sixteen years old boy have been brutally beaten up by a group of men. He and his friends have been attacked because they were speaking Polish.

Perhaps you could put it another way?

Yes, the issue has been discussed many times on the PF and the difference between immigrants and the indigenous population have been amply explained.
I believe that you indulged in such an excursion because you lost our friendly exchange in off-topic!
That makes you a really vast p...er person indeed!
That and the fact that if the situation was reversed you wouldn't hesitate to scold Poland for alleged if not made up sins against minorities.

Maybe they refused to answer question of the strangers.
I'm sure their parents knew what they were protesting against and thats good enough for me.
I don't understand attitudes involved. Is no good if minority is complaining about something and everyone, including government is saying that they just have a fit or all that is politically motived, everything whats involves any community is politically motived.

Proper way is to address these issues.

Every country has it's internal problems, so there is no need to intervene in to neighbors backyard. It only makes worse.

Nowadays are not 30' of the XX century. Having large minorities in your country is only natural that there will be interventions and possibly repercussion of your internal policy - don't be so touchy! Somebody could assume that you have something to hide!

Well, some people give a damn, It wouldn't be wise to count on the Polish Government for ever.
There are real grievances of Poles in Lithuania, the most wise and right thing to do would be to address them and make them right.

I just see no financial gain in doing so for the USA.

Neither do I. Thats is not the point!

I do however see a possible financial loss for Poland because with every Pole that up and leaves Poland for the USA or anywhere for that matter, that's one less ZUS/tax payer for the Polish government. It's actually a double whammy for Poland because chances are, they paid for that person's education as well so it's a total loss for Poland.

Hey ! !! The same goes for Poles leaving for the EU countries! Do you think that there are many Poles in Poland who would immigrate illegally to the USA?
