Travel / What to do in Wroclaw! [49]

Only more modern.

At the moment Wroclaw looks pretty depressing due to the time of year and weather.

You can probably see everything in a couple of days.

The city is more vibrant in the summer.

Genealogy / Surnames Gall / Figura / Odrowaz [34]

One of my uncles believes that one of the families could have lived in what was once considered Austria???

Do you mean Poland under partition ?

Have a quick look at Polish history for the period in question. It will help you to understand the Austrian connection.

Check the Genealogy threads for links and then get back to us if you would like more help.

better than pancake day in UK,

It's much easier to organize. I seem to spend hours making pancakes for this family.

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

I suspect no Polish vodka can ever be as bad as e.g. Smirnoff.

It's a long time since I've had Smirnoff. I seem to remember it having no strength and being pretty ordinary.

It is true that almost any Polish vodka is good.

I think Bigbaldski has a problem between: presentation, quality and availability.

Bigbaldski,

Buy a small bottle of something and if you like it buy a big bottle for your father.

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

Starogardzka wódka

This is a cheap to mid-priced vodka, which I'm quite happy to drink. I don't think you will find it listed under 'the best vodka".

You have a problem because... it's all according to taste.

wait for a second opinion.

Have you checked the vodka drinking thread ?

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

Belvedere, Chopin, Pan Tadeusz usually come in a nice presentation box and the bottles have a decorative pattern.

If you google 'belvedere vodka', for example, you might find outlets in Germany.

Genealogy / Looking for Jasinski family members. [13]

Have you checked any Genealogy websites to find out if other people are looking for the same name ?

Have you checked school websites like nasza klasa for living people ? Or something like Friends Reunited.

Have you found all your relatives living in Canada and those who might have moved to the USA ?

Find a Family History group in your town or nearest city. They should be able to give you some tips and local knowledge on where to find Canadian documents.

Some of these groups have copies of documents on microfiche or similar

If you don't know. They are listed [if it's them] at ancestry.com But you will have to pay to see the records.

Are you looking for living people, your roots or both ?

Don't need to. I used to work with him in Buffalo. A good software engineer but nothing to do with bulbs.
Or do you mean someone else? :)

Do the Google. Or are you afraid of being wrong ?

Anyways, does it really matter that much? If it's really that important to you, you can say and think whatever you want. Enjoy!

It does matter to me. You are trying to change history.

Have another look at your list, do a Google and see how wrong you are.

And it is you who was trying to make a point when you made the list. I am simply pointing out your errors.

These "stupid" Americans, not only made it to the moon but also gave the world

The light bulb was invented by Joseph Swan. Englishman.
TV. Scotsman
Telephone. Scotsman
Internet. Englishman
Airplanes ? I think you mean powered flight.

The rocket used to power the Americans to the moon was developed from German Technology
Also, I seem to remember, but could be wrong, that it was the Germans who came up with nuclear energy first

Genealogy / Want to find a person [762]

To start you off. Try looking for papers/articles she might have published as a PhD student. Or papers she contributed to. You have the source of any such articles, which is the university. This will give you her name.

Failing that. Which city did she come from ? Find a message board for that city and post a message there.

Life / Superstitions in Poland [60]

Do you see many magpie in Poland ??

As you know Poland is full of trees, so even in city areas we have magpies. But they are not nice. In springtime they work their way down a tree eating the young of other birds. That's why, sometimes, when you see them there is often a lot of screeching.

Life / Wszystkich Świętych (All Saints Day) // Dzien Zaduszny (All Souls day) [89]

With Halloween preceding these two very important days (All Saints & All Souls) - it is important not to get caught up with the ever growing commercialism

It will be a few years yet before we see Halloween in Poland.

The kids can't go Trick or Treating because most people live in flats and if they can't gain entry to the block it will be a waste of time.

Many people leave town in the days before November 1st. This will also cause problems for children.
