Genealogy / Paprotnia Poland 1800-1900 [10]

First of all, you will need to find out which Paprotnia ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paprotnia ) is the correct one. Once you know, check which parish was responsible, and then check at which state archive the relevant church books are now stored (provided they have survived the war and/ or weren't looted by the Soviets). Many records have been digitized lately with the help of EU funds, so you might be lucky to find what you're looking for online.

archiwa.gov.pl
szukajwarchiwach.pl

If you can't narrow it down, you will have to check a lot of church books, I'm afraid. Were your ancestors catholic or Jewish?

Try the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild at immigrantships.net/index.html for the Baltimore arrivals, and the Ellis Island web site for NYC. It should be quite easy to obtain high quality copies of the original ship manifests as well as the naturalization records. I would also suggest to search the various census records that are available online.

Did you check the LDS database already?

Genealogy / Polish & Prussian/German town name cross-reference. [100]

On the immigration transcript it has something that looks like Berluialius, Prussia

Can you post an image? "Berluialius" sounds wrong; definitely not a Prussian/German place name.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

is this tirade directed at me?

No, and it wasn't a tirade either. Have you actually read and understood what I wrote? We have some conservative members here with an unbearable holier-than-thou attitude. They think that a woman has no say when it comes to abortion, yet they are more than happy to get them pregnant without taking the responsibility afterwards. Hypocrites and bigots, the whole lot of them, and your post surely sounded as if you are part of that bunch.

I for example am not bothered by beliefs of women

Seems that some catholic men don't mind to get some nookie before marriage and don't care much if having a little fun with their girlfriend has consequences. They refuse to take responsibility and take off; but only after telling their girl that abortion is not an option...

...most European countries, are currently in a population decline. ... Once adults, will not be able to support the elderly/pensioners.

Keep in mind that this scenario will only be true for one generation. Once the Baby Boomers have passed away, the problem will not be as pressing anymore. What is wrong with a smaller population anyway? Countries like Poland, Germany, France or the UK are way overpopulated considering their area, and life would be much nicer with a little bit more ellbow space for everyone. Corporations will try to reduce their labor costs even further, so there's no need for a large pool of workers anymore. Blue collar jobs are already outsourced to cheap third-world countries.

When politicians complain about population decline, they actually mean the loss of power for them and their country. Shortsighted in my eyes.

What matters is what you believe in as an adult. In this case you either do or you don't.

I don't understand why you are putting up a smoke screen here, Iron, and pretend that nothing of what you said has to do with your faith. That's simply not true, and you know it. Just have a look at what the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops had to say about the "Life and Dignity of the Human Person":

usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/what-we-believe/catholic-social-teaching/life-and-dignity-of-the-human-person.cfm

"The Catholic Church proclaims that human life is sacred..."
"In our society, human life is under direct attack from abortion and euthanasia."

This is exactly your position in this whole discussion.

it all boil down to whether or not you believe that human life is sacred.

Who told you that human life is sacred? That's right, the RCC. Back to square one, Iron.

It is you who have a problem

Because I don't agree with the catholic doctrine?

we agree to disagree

Yup, but that doesn't mean that we cannot talk about it.

If you don't belief that all human life is sacred

Again, it all boils down to the question how far you want to go. There are medical cases for example where the mother would face certain death if she would continue a pregnancy. Is it acceptable for you to kill the woman just to save a one week old conglomerate of cells? Who is worth more? That's an ethical problem. I know that you said that the above would be the only acceptable exception for you, but for many other conservative or fundamentalist Christians out there it is not. What about a girl who got raped by her own father? What about the pope telling people in some overpopulated, HIV ridden hellholes of Africa not to use condoms? It's an ethical dilemma and you will have to answer for yourself whether the lives of people or following your faith is more important to you.

what you said make no sense.

Only to you and a handful of others here on PF, Iron. But that's okay.

WTF that's suppose to mean?

Exactly what I said: people like you only care about a woman and her unborn child as long as the mother conforms to your religious belief system. The woman could've been raped or would be killed when going full term, or the fetus could be so severely disabled that it wouldn't survive - you would still insist that an abortion is a sin. It's all about your religion. That's only YOUR view though. If a woman decides to have an abortion, you can of course consider it to be a sin, but her decision is still non of your business.

How many Muslim refuges

Not that many here in the US...

We all know that certain "concerned" members of PF are not really worried about the mother or the unborn child. It's all about their religion/ faith, and nothing else.

History / Conscripted to German Army, then the British Polish Free Army. How? [12]

You too, would benefit from reading that wiki note.

Why? Because I used "Volksdeutsche" instead of "Volksliste"? I don't write lengthy essays about the different categories of the Deutsche Volksliste when there is a thread about that topic already in the archive.

History / Conscripted to German Army, then the British Polish Free Army. How? [12]

desert "probably" from the "Volksdeutscher."

You cannot desert from the "Volksdeutsche". These were a group of Polish citizens that were considered ethnic Germans by the Nazis, and as such were conscripted to the German military. You need to read up on the whole concept to really understand what it was all about. There is a longish thread about this topic somewhere in PF's archives, if I recall correctly.

Did he see action while with the German Army?

Write to the so-called "Deutsche Dienststelle" in Berlin and provide all relevant information. At the moment, it takes more than a year for them to respond due to the large number of research requests. If they have a military record of your father on file, they will send it to you together with copies of personal documents they might have in their archive (such as an ID card that identified him as "volksdeutsch", his military ID card, and so on).

dd-wast.de/en/home.html

How long was he in the Volksdeutscher?

Depends on whom you ask. Many Poles consider(ed) these ethnic Germans (the Volksdeutsche) traitors, and they were treated as such. Since your father fought in the British Polish Free Army, things are most likely a bit different.

Conscripted to German Army

Probably as a so-called "Volksdeutscher".

I am trying to find out how he came to leave the German Army

Either deserted or captured, then switched sides.

Genealogy / How to find a burial site / records in Poland... [80]

Genealogy is VERY difficult in Poland.

Only if you are looking for ancestors before (about) 1725, and only if your ancestors were not catholic. Otherwise, it's actually quite easy because Polish state archives are digitizing old records with the help of EU funds at the moment, and these records are available for free online.

News / Religious extremists advocate murdering gay Polish politician [42]

And BTW she was killed by the Prussian Govt for being a Papist and slavic?

Don't try to construct some Prussian anti-slavic BS out of this. They couldn't care less at that time whether you were slavic or not. She was burned because they considered her a witch. Equally stupid reason, though.

Love / Woman 28 single, too late for a relationship with a Polish man? [67]

That's exactly why they all swoon over Jared Leto, who is 44.

Nah. The vast majority of teenage girls do not appreciate creepy 44 year old dudes with too much hair.

I will be dating another girl by that time.

If you can find one who is willing to date an old fart... :)
