News / Israel furious as Poland signs law to limit property claims [200]

Is it heirless though, Maf ? This remains the salient question.

Let's say yes. No known direct descendants of the presumed owner. What should happen to it? What should happen with those who invested/built on the land after WWII?

I sent you a private mail,

you didn't answer the questions...

who should heirless propterty be "returned" to?

how should those losing their property in such circumstances be compensated? and by who?

Until you answer those two simple questions there's no real basis for conversation....

@Lyzko

I'm not going to respond to anything else you write until you answer my questions....

Who should heirless property be "returned" to?

Who should compensate those who have built on or invested in the property after WWII?

Is it that hard to answer simple questions?

to the "original" owner(s) of the property and their descendants,

Do you understand the word "heirless"? For many of the properties in question no descendant of the original owner(s) can be found. Who should such properties be "returned" to? And what should happen to those who have built and invested in the land?

And make no mistake there are people looking to make claims on heirless property.... so what (according to you) should happen?

Canarsie Indian

Not a verified ethnonym.... (I know a _lot_ about Native Americans... you're not getting apocryphal stories past me).

Native Americans, like the Roma, were never and still aren't officially granted citizenship status

Where did you get this weird idea from? It's not true; All American Indians were made citizens of the US (some against their will) in 1924

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Citizenship_Act

To bring it back to Poland, many of the properties in question have no legal heirs... who is such property supposed to be 'returned' to? Who will compensate those who lose property they bought/developed in good faith?

Genealogy / Polish equivalent of William [16]

Nah that is a German name, used in Poland.

A distinction without a difference....

Boleslaus, which my grandparents said was the Polish version of William.

In Polish Bolesław and it's not really a Polish version of William but if you want to associate it with an English name then William is a good choice.

this is how things function in a "real democracy"

I do not respond to arguments of the type: А у вас негров линчуют* and neither should anyone else.

If you support the return of a neo-PRL media in Poland then make the positive case for it. Don't drag other irrelevant issues into it....

However, there's a distinction between out-and-out bigotry and criticism of others-:) We all can stand improvement.

Surely true, but irrelevant. Please answer:

Who should heirless property be "returned" to?

What does "returning" property to people who've never lived (and have no intention of living) in Poland?

What happens to people who've invested in housing/businesses in good faith on such properties? Who compensates them?

do you secretly want to promote antisemitism?

Identity politics absolutely needs enemies and deep rooted prejudices... and so they find and/or invent it when there's not enough going around (see racism in the US or UK).

the "Lex TVN" bill, remember?

In todays' hilarity.... before redoing the vote (reasumpcja) Marshall of the Sejm Elżbieta Witek claimed that she had consulted with 5 constitutionalists (this has turned into 'lawyers' in the media).

Okay, a couple of opposition MPs said... can you name them?

Those closest to an answer are opinions on an unrelated case from 2018 which did not in fact result in a re-vote....

PiS making up any kind of crap to do what they want in the proud traditions of the PRL... the ruling party doesn't need law... it's word is the law.

ather that worry about foreign capital owning mass media in Poland.

Well in the EU Poland can't limit "foreign" capital in the media. If the US sold its shares to a German company (absolutely within the settings of this new law) would PiS say "Great! Mission Accomplished!"

This is about trying to reinstall a PRL style media where "journalists" do PR for the ruling party and repeat government talking points...

Newest development: tvn has received a license from the Netherlands to broadcast

a statement reads: jeśli KRRIT nie wyda decyzji o przedłużeniu koncesji TVN24 do 26 września, dalsze nadawanie umożliwi, zgodnie z polskim i unijnym prawem, koncesja holenderska (If the National Broadcasting Council doesn't decide to prolong our license by Sept 26, further broadcasting is made possible, by Polish and EU law by the Dutch license.)

In other news, KO is gaining in polls and PiS.... not so much.... one poll has them even at 26% which is probably optimistic... (PiS support is usually underestimated in polls since some are hesitant to express support for them in public).

30 years is a reasonable timeline

Nothing is reasonable for some. Nonetheless, Poland has not been communist for over 30 years, there would need to be really strong and good reasons to explain why no earlier claim was made.

only the irretrievably cynical could imagine that it's solely about money. It's more about intangibles such as

clinging to a narrative that the other side won't believe

The great majority of Poles feel no collective guilt about the holocaust, that (pretty justifiable) position that enrages some (not all) Jews and some others.

I'm not against all claims but they need to be made by the victimized (or their direct descendents) and should not necessarily involve the return of the property itself (. If the original building was destroyed in the war the claimants should have no right to what was built on it after the war.

Just keeping the press free from the government is enough

But people who don't understand 'rule of law' (like JK) think that winning an election entitles them to do anything they want and to violate terms of freely signed agreements....

In other news Duda has said words that could be construed as meaning he'll veto the law if it gets through the Sejm again...

Is this a diplomatic way out of the mess that PiS has created for itself or one of his attempts to establish himself as an independent entity (which are usually slapped down by JK in a hurry)

Polonia / POLES vs BULGARIANS [160]

when Bulgarians say NO their head move up-down,

A bit exaggerated, it's not a nod, it's more a sharp upward jerk (maybe with lip raised).

The supposed Bulgarian 'yes' with head shaking isn't like western head shaking but maybe a bit closer to the Indian head wobble..

I've been told by a Bulgarian or two that both are passing out of use among younger people (I have no idea if that's true or not).

Work / American High School Teacher looking to teach English in Poland [27]

is there still a vibrant job market in ESL for native speakers in Warsaw?

No. Hasn't been for years. Natives with functional to fluent Polish can do well but it takes time to build up a client base. The idea is you have a job for basic expenses and healthcare and do extra work (classes, editing, translation) for disposable income.

Also in Poland, feet on the ground means a lot. Once you're in the country you physically go around rather than correspond (even if people tell you it's not that way anymore.... it's still that way).

Also, don't start off in Warsaw. I would suggest a city of around 100,000 (or less) with good connections to a city of 500,000 or more.

I always say that Poland can be a great place to live (once you figure out how things work and stop trying to change them) but it doesn't have a user-friendly interface.

Don't give up on the idea of Poland but Warsaw.... is not a place for newbies (and lots more expensive than anywhere else for.... not much more).

"there are few adverts for native speakers written in English"

They want to filter out those who don't know Polish (who have the potential to be massive pains in the neck).

News / Poland - A True Bastion and Defender of Free Speech [257]

Merged:

The Polish Minister of Education wants university lecturer fired for twitter comments

Another day another step by PiS back to the PRL.

In Poznań, a professor of German at Adam Mickiewicz University, made several unflattering tweets about Paweł Kukiz after his vote in favor of government media capture.

He later deleted one post (referring to Kukiz as 'gnida' (.... louse?) for being too emotional.

On Friday minister of Education Przemysław Czarnek said: "Ten naukowiec, który obrzydliwie wyrażał się na temat posła Pawła Kukiza, z jednego z ważnych miast w Polsce, nie będzie na tej uczelni pracował" (That academic, who so disgustingly expressed himself regarding MP Pawłe Kukiz, from of the more important cities in Poland, will not work at that institution)

The university's first response was that there are no grounds to terminate the employment of the professor.

The Kicker? The account has always been anonymous and only those allowed by the account holder can see the tweets....

So, the government is monitoring twitter for critical comments? Why would they do that?

Interestingly the tweets don't sound any worse than thousands and thousands of others after the vote to censor TVN, so why was it singled out?

Are academics being given a message (Stop criticizing the government.... or else)?

Polonia / POLES vs BULGARIANS [160]

the Bulgarian language differs radically from Polish

What's weird is how much of the vocabulary is similar.... But yeah Bulgarian is _the_ Balkan language. It has more of the features that linguists attribute to the Balkan sprachbund than any other (old chart I saw).

The features are (off the top of my head):

no (or greatly reduced) infinitive - "I want that I go" instead of "I want to go"

merger of genitive and dative cases (if the language has cases)

post-posed articles 'house-the' instead of 'the house'

future tense derived from the verb 'want'

evidential marking (a grammatical distinction between "He ate it (I know because I saw it)" and "He ate it (I didn't actually see it happen)" or "He ate it (to my surprise)"

I forget the rest
