Life / Polish folk remedy for styes? [12]

Don't know any Polish remedies for styes, but in England they rub a cat's tail in the eye. Maybe it works.

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

Of everyone on this forum, I would be willing to bet not one of you, excluding the Poles of course, even comes close to FCE level in Polish, regardless of how long you've been here.

Apparently (after ten years of speaking it, and a LOT of lessons) I'm at advanced level (about C1) and I suspect one or two others here are as well.

Genealogy / What are common Polish character traits? [417]

6.They don't spend money crazy.

Show me a Pole with an old mobile phone. People here buy the newest and best, but can't afford to put credit on it and send "sygnałki" to people.

UK, Ireland / Warning to British people visiting Poland!! Don't get drunk and smash the place up! [447]

you have to be careful when you sip peacefully a pint of lager in some places, some rough people want to drug you

Rubbish. I've drunk lager at least three times a week for ten years and never been drugged, worse luck.

many times hookers are fancy your wallet

That's the nature of prostitution. The world's oldest profession, every town in the world has it. Warsaw has (as far as I know) only one clip joint. This compares well to London or Paris.

sold by your ilk to an evil commie soviet basrtads which you never experienced

Nutty.

Just one more thing about hospitals, don't expect English when you abroad.

Even in a small town in Poland, there are usually English-speakers.

Real Estate / Apartments too expensive for Poles living in Poland [54]

Most older Poles still have their apartments from communist times

Yes, and there's a lot of people with more than one flat, where people have bought a new flat and not sold their old one. The article didn't say how any of those people planning to buy already had somewhere that they were planning to keep.

Grzegorz_

I remember that scandal.

Given the topic of the thread, it's worth mentioning that there was never any suggestion that foreign visitors were involved. I understand they started off with homeless people whose funerals were paid for by the state and then got greedier and started killing more and ore patients.

Here's a link to the story.

Language / Terms of endearment in Polish [222]

yes, the gentleman is absolutely correct.

Yes, but depends slightly on whether it's bitch=kurwa (a whore) or bitch=suka/suczka (a lady dog). Bitch=dziwka (a slapper) wouldn't be nice.

Law / How do I verify a Polish company's existence? [240]

cangarooo

It's a Ukrainian couple (that would be a warning sign for some), very little info about them, similar name to a car dealership in another city. Registered on a residential street. Most companies in PL would not pay 100% in advance, unless they really had no other option. You can check them for credit history at the KRD for a small fee.

And their product is hardly an unusual one.

It would help to know a little more.

Life / Why so many Poles use a second hands clothes? [110]

anyone who buy 2nd hand just want to have something unusual.

There's some truth in that. Also, some amazing bargains. A lot of people who go to those shops don't touch chainstore stuff, but look for (or pay the assistant to look out for) specific things.

pants

Do you mean underpants? Most second-hand shops won't stock them. And the suit I bought could only have come from a rich person.

CA Melrose has several vintage (aka second-hand) stores. Many great items can be found.

Queen Elizabeth (who can only get away with wearing a dress once) snips out the labels and sends everything to vintage clothes shops. She's been doing it all her life. In the UK, if you know which ones to go to (in very affluent areas), there are some amazing bargains.

I don't talk about some snobs or bohemians

Plenty of normal people use them. There's a great one near me, always full of people, young couples, old ladies, even the odd expat.

I went in to buy some English-language books last week and came out with a 400 euro designer suit, looks brand new, for 24zl.

I was thinking about buying a new suit anyway, I don't much like Polish-made clothes, I was dreading the hassle of trying clothes on all round town, I prefer shops like Emporio Armani and Hugo Boss but hate the exorbitant prices, and bingo, the very thing I was looking for fell into my lap for the price of a bottle of cheap wine.

now days when people are experiencing economic hardships.

You'd be surprised how many rich people use them, discreetly of course.

she's having way too much fun.

I know someone in UK who does that. Some amazing things end up in those shops, and using them is very 'green'.

Travel / How do I go by ferry from south of England to Gdynia? [15]

Copenhagen and then the ferry to Poland.

That might be a good way.

An alternative would be to drive to Lincolnshire, Immingham to be exact, and sail to Gdynia. I couldn't find a quick link from google, but it is certainly possible. Not cheap though.

Study / "MAGISTER" OR "MASTERS DEGREE" - ARE THEY THE SAME? [75]

Quite a few Scottish universities do that.

Not long ago I heard about someone who had an MA from (I think) Edinburgh who was turned town for an English teaching job in Saudi, because they couldn't get their heads round the idea of an MA being a first degree.

True. For some reason it put your name on the quote. I'll edit it now.

Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

It comes from old-Polish word "murzać" meaning dirty

It comes from the same root as the English word 'Moor'.

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

Most have said it sounds french

Checking Google in Polish, there are certainly some people called Marchiel in North East Poland. But looking at in French, there far more people with that name in France.

Various battles happened in NE Poland during the Napoleonic Wars, Ostrolenka (Ostrołęka) etc.; the French army were here for a long time and presumably some of them stayed.
