USA, Canada / The proper behavior an American should show when visiting Poland [158]

Things to be careful of as not to offend anyone?

Don't be loud and annoying or act stupid. Be respectful of Polish history. Compliment them on their exquisite style and good looks. Tell them they are the best cooks in the world. Talk about the bright future Poland has and what a wonderful country Poland is and that you are honored to be their guest.

News / RUSSIA TO MAKE PUBLIC THE KATYN FILES... [274]

Poland fought for independence and was a new nation, a rising star before being partitioned by Germany and Russia. What angered Hitler was Britain signing an agreement to help Poland if needed and the aquisition of GdaƄsk, a port the Germans were convinced belonged to them. They knew Poland would make a lot of money and outdo Germany, struggling with it's Versailles troubles. Germans saw Poland as the big winner in the deal and feared they would be overshadowed by it.

News / RUSSIA TO MAKE PUBLIC THE KATYN FILES... [274]

Germans wanted the parts of Poland containing patches of ethnic Germans. What they really wanted was all of Poland subdued because Hitler saw Poland courting favor with Great Britain and worried it would either fall to the Bolsheviks or become an economic powerhouse with help from the west. Either way it spelled doom for Germany who had just been punished by the Treaty of Versailles.

They didn't want to fight Russia head on so they sucker punched them instead.

They try, Havok, but so does Germany, Russia, Czech Republic, Ukraine, not to mention France and Briton. It makes it tougher to make money in such circumstances so people get mad and take it out on each other.

But you see, Havok, all three countries compete with one another economically, so it's hard to form alliances when you are trying to attract business and industry. There tends to be insurmountable resentment.

Life / How would you describe the Polish sense of humour? [66]

I would describe the Polish sense o' humor as one of subtle wit, refinement and good taste. We appreciate the art of humor and are quite sophisticated in our comedy preferences.

Poles excell at irony and cannot be outdone.

Life / Why so many Poles use a second hands clothes? [110]

I used to buy clothing at thrift stores, not so much now. My mom used to buy a lot of my summer clothing there because the items are cheaper and I usually ended up destroying them, anyway. I bought second hand clothing for a while because it was considered trendy. Every once in a while I'll go to Goodwill and try to find a nice, full length denim skirt when I am in my "born again religious fanatic" impersonation mood.

Another kind of second hand store sells vintage clothes which can give you a one of a kind, "interesting" look at parties.

Life / Why so many Poles use a second hands clothes? [110]

Why so many not feel ashamed to wear pants or socks after some other people?
Shops with second hands cloths are everywhere, on every corner.

It's nothing to be ashamed of! It's a great way to save money and recycle clothing and the Poles aren't the only ones!

Genealogy / Neugebauer surname in Poland / Nestor, Zurawel, Worobec, Atamanczuk in Galicia Poland [27]

second names were needed to differentiate between the people

That was for Germans, but Jews were different. Some of them ended up with names like Greenbaum or something Finkel (I forget the first part) because a German gave them a random surname. I read about it online. I was wondering why some Jews had strange sounding German surnames that didn't sound like they had much to do with Judaism, names like Goldberg, so I did some research.

It's because German Aristocrats were responsible for giving surnames to Jews. Some Jews ended up with some silly sounding ones because of that. Neubauer was probably assigned to a Jew by a King or Prince a couple hundred years ago. It doesn't mean that Jews farmed, it was just a random surname someone picked out of the wishing well.

Sounds like Bagels were eaten by Polish Jews, but it's actually a Polish food. So whenever we think of Polish food, we can think of the Bagel we had for breakfast :)

In fact isn't much of Polish/Jewish cuisine similar?

Which is something else I wonder about...it seems that there is so much influence on each other, between Poles and Jews. Even the name "Polan" seems to be shared.

What I wonder is, when Jews did convert, did they suddenly stop all ties with the Jewish community, or, were they more like Jewish Christians who mingled in both communities only to officially attend Mass and communion?

Meaning that every Jew who converts automatically became a noble and his family did too.

I wonder how many Jews decided to do that. Becoming a noble is quite an incentive.

They were a Turkic people.

Their descriptions include "white skin, blue eyes and reddish hair", just like Barbara.
The Khazars looked like this before Mongol invasions.

Jesus was a Jew?...Where did you get this idea?

Of course he was Jewish, but with a very strong Greek streak. But, that was common in Judaism at one time.

So what if a Jew from Ukraine has Khazar and middle eastern ancestry?

Exactly. People feel threatened by that concept.

@ Jonni...I remember reading there was a war against Khazaria and they left.

Brainwashed by whom, PP? I'd really like to know.

By people who believe acknowledging Khazars is a threat to the legitimacy of Israel. What about historical accuracy?

How could they just disappear? I don't believe they did. They moved west :)

Besides, you guys are forgetting that Jews are generally forbidden to marry peolpe from other religions.

What about converts?

Jonni has been brainwashed into believing Khazars are a bad thing and believing in their existence and influence means you don't support the Israeli state which is pure hogwash. You can acknowledge Khazaria and this Jewish state's significant influence on Jewish life and culture without condemning Israel, for the sake of historical accuracy...

Poland the origin of the Jews? Do they descend from Poland? Nope and nope...
Hence no jewish roots! It can't be that hard, can't it....

The odd thing is, it was a place Khazars used to get to the rest of Europe and yet Polish Jews do not have Khazarian blood? How can a place with such a Khazarian influence not have any descendants of Khazars?

How many Poles have Khazarian ancestors who converted to Catholicism?

It's kind of obvious that having one Jewish ancestor 300 years earlier won't change your genotype much.

That's so true. In fact, your great great great great grandmother has virtually nothing to do with who you are genetically. If your great great great grandmother was, let's say, a Turk, and she were the only Turk on either side of the family, it would be almost like having no Turkish ancestors whatsoever. You would look nothing like a Turk.
