Genealogy / Do I look Polish? (my picture) [375]

I can't see any reason to be upset about having a bit of a mix in your genes.

I can't think of any human "pure breed" these days. That was possible in the times when groups of people lived for thousands of years in perfect isolations from other groups.

Language / Postcard from Wolyn.. translation if possible.. [19]

Do you collect such things, Ziemowit?

Not necessarily. But I am always eager to have a look into old documents.

Sütterlin was the handwriting what was teached in the schools since about 1911

And since the document was written in 1849, is it supposed to use the script other than Sütterlin?

Surely, I will try to put a scan of it here as soon as I get it.

The quality of the scan is so low that you cannot tell if it's in Suetterlin or standard German. Even the date of the otherwise well preserved postal stamp is indiscernible.

Btw, I've just bought a letter posted in the year 1849 from Breslau to a nearby village for a bargain price. It hasn't arrived yet, but reading this thread here I have just realized it may be in Suetterlin too. Did people write in standard German as well at that time?

History / Świętowit/Svetovid, God of our ancestors - Does He watch over us even now? [47]

Very little is known about Sventovid. This is because Christians from the West as well as the first native ones in the East of Europe were eager to destroy all traces of pagan religion and the pagans themselves did not have their own scripture to record the story of their gods for posterity.

If Sventovid was a piece of wood, then the Christ carved in wood on the Cross is nothing more than that, too. In reality both are only visible representations of either imaginary (for non-believers) or supranatural but truly real beings (for believers).

History / Will Poland rebuild classical buildings? [24]

Is that Germany's fault or Britain's fault?

I've recently watched a documentary saying that the Allies (I think specifically the Americans) missed their targets in Dressden as instead of dropping bombs on the industrial areas of the town as it had been planned beforehand, they sort of unintenionally dropped them onto the old town. The result was they turned the old town into ashes overnight ...

Genealogy / Wladyslaw and the English equivalent [22]

He may have been a conscript in the German army and perhaps deserted to the US army on the western front because he did not want to die for the Keiser?

This is only a loose hypothesis as I really don't know about the locations of the Americans in Europe during the WW !. On my reading list there's a book on the sacrifice of American soldiers in this conflict.

Love / How do Polish men feel about gender equality? [780]

... before Poland elects a woman for your president

I think it's very likely - if there is a suitable candidate. In Poland the position of the President is much weaker than the one of the Prime Minister and we already have have had three female prime ministers since 1989.

The President of Poland is basically a guard of the chandelier in the Presidential Palace.

By the way, have you heard that US Ambassador to Poland, a nominee of Donald Trump, Georgette Mosbacher has just announced her resignation from the post?

News / Unfulfilled promises by PiS [559]

being nasty and unpleasant for the sake of being nasty and unpleasant....)

They are sinking all the time ... no doubt about it. But His Majesty's Opposition is none the better at all.

Szymon Hołwnia and his political group is - when you scrape off the cover - nothing more than PO really. So all in all, there are no bright political perspectives for Poland in the near future.

Even the dreams of an Intermarium have somehow faded away recently; PiS don't claim any reparations from Germany as it did quite a little while ago; and what is the worst thing of all (this point is being addressed to Crow in particular), recent genetic studies show that the Germans have more of Sarmatian blood in them than the Polish. Horror!

Off-Topic / Stock Market and Trading Talk [1011]

I realize, of course, that bitcoin is a very risky business, but with the general mood in the world changing perhap for the better after the anty-covid vaccine has been introduced, why not think that bitcoin will be in a good shape for a time being, that is to say for the next 6 months or so? Having said that, I'm not any expert on bitcoin, and I don't even know its current rate, to be honest.

The interesting question is why the company has decided to go into a risky financial buinness having as their core business activity something being so far away from it. Has the managment given any explanation or any motives behind the purchase of such a company?

So my prediction is that the price of the stock may not necesarily go down and is bound to remain roghly as it is (with an imminent correction meanwhile) and then likely to go up again.

What made you pick up such a splendidly performing stock in the first place? You are a genius ...

Anybody have any tips ?

There is this golden rule for when the stock goes up: you should place renewed stop-loss orders which will typically be about 20% below the current price.

I once came across a deal when my stock went up 100% in value in a month, so in an even longer time than yours. The pressure an investor feels to sell it then is enormous and even more so if you are leveraged as I was back then. My defence against this pressure was to sell 40% of the stock first. I did accordingly and I am proud of this move to this very day as my stock then went up a further 100% in the following two or three weeks. As this partial selling had eased the pressure I felt, I was able to watch the stock going up again. That way I made a 400% profit on the 60% of my holdings in just three months which deal has so far been my best ever on a stock exchange.

A stop-loss order wouldn't, however, have made the job in my case in the second phase as the stock had abruptly gone down just after I sold it at the very peak, but that is a different story. In your case, a stop-loss would have done nicely, even if it were 15% if you felt 20% was too much.

I will be glad to hear where your stock goes next as it is becoming a truly thrilling experience now :-)

Genealogy / Looking for two cities likely in Poland 1882/1883 [6]

In a church book fra Latvia 1883 a city named Lantzky/Luntzky or similar is mentioned

There's a town/parish called Landzani in former Latgalia, the part of Latvia which belonged to the Polish Commonwealth until 1795. Landzani is a Latvian name, but the name used until 1795 may have sounded a bit different.

Hey Buddy, welcome back old boy !

Thanks! I think I will be posting occasionally from now on and most likely in the Stock Market or History Sections. At any rate, this time I won't let myself engage in poinless exchanges with forum idiots like Joker to name just one.

knowing when to pull the trigger on your stocks (sell) is what makes you rich.

Actually, deciding on the selling of a stock is a lot more difficult than buying unless of course you are a trader rather than an investror. What if you sell and the moment you have done it the stock starts to climb up like crazy? Very frustrating ...

ORLEN low today was $59

Orlen is a very special kind of company. It is a "spółka Skarbu Państwa" which means that the government has a deciding vote in it. The government may change its CEO overnight or tell them to buy a media company that has nothing to do with the core business of their as it actually has done for political reasons quite recently. It is a kind of company that you don't have in the US and thank God you don't.

I'd rather rue a missed opportunity with Orlen. [...] I forgot about it

You did because you didn't see an opportunity there. You've seen it only after it had actually happened.

almost everyone was pointing at the stock being hugely undervalued

No guts, no glory.

Or, as Warren of Omaha puts it:

when they avoid the former at all cost and give away the latter at the drop of a hat?

The Polish Emilia Plater who defies your definition comes to mind

Independence March was a success despite "deadly pandemic"

A great success. A fired flare ignited an apartment. Several policemen attacked by the so-called Polish patriots have been injured.

how they want total control and transform human beings through use of force (state, police, military etc).

The newest example in Poland is the PiS government's idea of sending soldiers of the Territorial Defense Forces to hospitals to check if hospital administrations do not hide COVID-19 beds from the eyes of the Ministry of Health. Of course, the boys do not circle around hospital wards counting the beds, but rely on information provided to them by hospital administrations.

It might be an excellent topic for Atch's or anybody else's dinner today. I am very worried if our Founding Fathers (Piłsudski, Dmowski, Paderewski and others) had ever come up with the idea of an independent Poland had they known that a party called "Law and Justice" would come into existence and subsequently into power one day...

They have just announced that Biden's ancestor was Mieszko I, the first historic ruler of Poland.

I doubt if the same can be said of Donald Trump.

History / Do Polish people in general dislike Russia or Germany more? [369]

East Germans have alot more in common with western Poles than with many West Germans

I concur, there is something quite "different" about a Wessi as compared to an Ossi. I myself feel much more affinity to East Germans than to West Germans.

Wasn't it Graffin Doenhoff of East Prussia who once said she felt more at home in Poland than in West Germany? All because of a striking similarity in mentality and emotions between people of East Prussia, East Germany and Poland?

Like Polski Fiat 125P, it was manufactured on an Italian license. Similar models, but Polski Fiat looked nicer to me.

Speaking of commie times in Central Europe, has anyone seen the German comedy film "Good-bye Lenin"? Excellent.

Oh yeah, if Konfederacja said so it must be true...

I'm glad that you've just noticed here Konfederacja is a bunch of weird clowns.

They have the same obsession on Germans as the PRL commies had on American imperialists.

Also the government can blame the mass protests for the exponential rise in cases and hospitals being overwhelmed

You've just hit the nail on the head.

Polish society is changing. Analysts say it has been changing remarkably for that last 4 years, but the change was somehow hiden. And now it has erupted with the abortion ruling being only the spark for it. No, it is not the matter of the Left or the Right. The strength of the protests shows that a new generation of Poles has erupted. For the first time in Polish history people walked into churches disturbing masses being in progress or painting vulgar words on church buildings. I think they have enough of their silly bishops unable to reform the Polish Catholic Church, reciting nothing more than unmeaningful dogmas. They decided the Church is on the opposite side of the barricade.

Neither Jaro Kaczyński nor that crazy woman Julia Przyłęska will survive it in the longer run. I think many people, even in his own party, are tired of Jaro. There came a time for him to leave the scene. It is a very good time to go away in shame which is what he truly deserves as he has become an obvious embarrasment for himself and for the people of Poland.
