Genealogy / Some Macedonian, Croatian, Serbian Second Names look Polish! [38]

I see a lot of Macedonian people with ski on the end and Polish looking last names. What is the connection and are there any other countries that have the same thing (like countries like Macedonia, Croatia etc.) I would like to know because I am Polish but have some Croatian family and lots of Croatian friends.

Genealogy / Polish Gypsy Roots & Roma ancestors in their families [206]

I dunno. I feel like most Polish people have darker features and brown/black hair. No joke out of 100 Polish people I probably see only 5 who are blonde but I see a fair bit who have very dark blonde/brown hair and dark eyes.

My dad has black hair, brown eyes, sorta pale skin.
My mum has Black hair, hazle eyes, olive skin
My sister has jet black hair, dark olive skin, dark eyes and other has dark brown hair, eyes, and pale/olive skin.
I have Dark hair, eyes, and dark skin

Genealogy / Are all Poles blue eyed and blonde? [451]

??? I've never met a pole with blonde hair blue eyes and I have met MANY. I've only met a few dirty blonde/light brown hair which is fairly common amount slavs.

Black/brown is the most prodiminant colour in all slavs and a lot tend to have darker features. these blonde ppl must be scandinvians or somthing

Ok. Seriously, all the Poles I know except a small few have brown/black hair. Everywhere I look, I look on Polish TV, they all have brown/black hair unless dyed.

I know this is just one example but here:

I don't see any blondes?

I look at my family. some are dark some are paler but we all have dark hair. I look at the Polish communities, all dark hair and when I go to Poland. Same!

History / What do Poles think about Turks? [761]

I like the Turks.

I read this and thought it was pretty cool:

"The contacts with Ottoman Turkey in the 17th century brought many new words, some of them still in use, e.g. jar (deep valley), szaszłyk (shish kebab), filiżanka (cup), arbuz (water melon), dywan (carpet), kiełbasa (sausage)"

Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [656]

harrisonmcmanus your views are distorted. I would say most common colour is Brown, varying in all shades, but there's still fair bit of blonde, black etc. Whenever I go down to the local Polish Club, it is very hard to find somone with blonde hair and who fits in with your idea of what a typical pole looks like. I have noticed that we have All colours of eyes from brown, blue, hazel, green etc. We are certainly darker than the Germans lol

Generally I'd say Polish people have that Eastern look that to any outsider looks very similar and looks "Eastern European" for example (Bulgarians, Polaks, Hrvats, Russians etc). People who are in this group of people I think can distinguish fairly well who is who, with that being said I think we do share the look with these other Slavs sometimes it's very noticeable sometimes it's not. Also people saying Poles are blonde pale etc, i've said this numerous times from all of the Poles I know the general haircolour is brown with the few occasions of black (very dark) and blonde (very light).

News / Poland's Organized Crime [58]

Why is it that you never really hear about Polish Organized crime? I've been reading up and that there is a large Polish Mafia presence in Chicago and other areas of America and also in Europe for example:

"In crime, East will meet West. Organised syndicates from Poland and the Baltic
States have been active beyond national borders. In Germany, Polish organized crime
groups are the second largest non-German organized crime group after Turkish
groups."

Does anyone have any more information particularly about the Pruszkow mafia and other Mafioso

Polish look very slavic in my opinion, some look like Russians some like Czechs and some like Serbs but you seldom see Pole looking like Germanic.

I agree 100%. I think polish people are darker than most east slavs, it's like we have a yellowish olivey skin tone naturally, noticed mostly brown hair/dark brown but a lot of dark blonde too.

You have to remember though Polish mixed with Tartars, romanians, ukranians, hungarians, sweeds, germans etc over the ages

History / Questions about Polish borders, Galicia and Cossacks. [50]

Can anyone tell me of the history of Poland when our land contained Ukraine/Belarus etc and further east/south. Why is it that Poland is much smaller than it once was.

2. Why is Galicia now in Ukraine?

3. I've ready many places that where Polish Cossacks who are obviously lesser known that Ukranian/russian cossacks. Can any one tell me of them because there doesn't seem to be much info about them.

Thanks

When I mean dark I don't mean Mediterranean dark. I think Polish skin varies. All the polish people I know tan very well (except for the very pale ones). For example I have pale olive skin, my oldest sister has VERY dark olive skin and my other sister is light.

It then all depends on the region of Poland probably. I'd imagine South are most tanned/dark but then again my family and friends are from North Poland and still exhibit darker skin.

I do disagree on we have a similar complection as germans, we are darker then germans but i agree with you that we are darker than east slavs.

When I say swedes it's from polish-swedish wars but the impact wouldn't be much I guess then yes?

When you say Magyars don't share genetics with Poland I think this is not true, I can't find the link at the moment but there was talk that Hungarians share a very common genetic profile and we both have the highest incidence of R1 in europe (don't quote me on R1)

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

I meant it more in the way of the Western/Eastern world than just Europe. When you hear "West" what comes to your mind? America, France, England... not much of a difference. But when you hear "East" it could be Russia, Persia or even China and Japan - so very different. Of course, Poland is culturally hard to distinguish from Western European countries but being listed alongside diverse Eastern cultures is an honor.

What are you talking about? We are slavs. We are eastern peoples. You're saying we are closer to the french than the russians? I think the term eastern europe should encompass all countries in the warsaw pact even if some are in European union.
