Genealogy / Possibility and proof of being Tatar [15]

Merged: Is she Lipka Tatar?

She came from present-day North-West Belarus on the border with Lithuania, she was very rich and only spoke Russian. She also appears to look Tatar (to me). Her surname was "Misiewicz" which comes from the Polish noun for a bear, however, it is a fairly rare surname in both Belarus and Poland and the only listed people with it are ethnic Tatars from that region.

I've included a picture of her. Any help would be great. Thanks

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

Merged: What's the origin of the name Tuga?

That's my maternal great grandfather's surname, he was supposedly Czech. So I got told that it could be a misspelling of the surname 'Tuha' which is still rare, but 'Tuha' is a female surname. Could anybody help me in the origins of the name? Thanks

Life / Polish people are the most ignorant people in the world! [331]

"i have 2 polish familys living next to me and several others from romania latvia and lithuania and bulgaria, the romanian woman talks, the polish are ignorant one woman thinks she is 'it ' better than everybody the other one is ok she does say hello but thats it,they dont socialise or do small talk, i wish they would **** off, when they were moving in it was obvious the 2 polish women were not intrested in talking to me or my wife, how hard is it to say 'hello how are you' even when i asked one, when they moved here do you like this town she just looks and gave a stupid look@ the sausage they are, they can go back to poland they are in the EU ! horrible people ignorant and they are not the hard workers people think they are they are not intrested in socialising very unfriendly people, oh and they dont have the best looking women in the world but as my mrs said the men are ugly and odd looking, and they seem to have 8 people living in a house meant for 6,"

I combined the two, as judging by the horrible grammar: this imbecile used two nicknames.

Life / Will Poland ever be multicultural like Sweden, Germany or France? [201]

Sorry for the long title (and another new thread :D), I have been wanting to ask for a while and I haven't het found what I have been looking for (yet!).

Do you think that Poland will ever be as multicultural as Sweden? I'm asking because Sweden was in the same position as Poland is in now, less than 40 years ago, and soon people started immigrating there en mass.

For example, do you think Poland will be multicultural and hence 'Western' within 10-20 years, or will it take a longer time or could it not happen at all?

Language / Ethnic backround of suffixes of Polish surnames [54]

Poleboy, your family may even be of Russian origin. I am tired of certain people saying that my surname is Armenian. Bernat is (in it's current form) a Silesian name, my dad's family originates from Silesia. I am half Polish half Silesian, no way am I Armenian, I'm more German than Armenian.

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

Hey Polonius, I'm pulling together the final pieces of my family tree. Dating back to the 1700s! Anyway, I was wondering if my surname prefix could also indicate where my 'original' ancestor came from? You know, my surname is a patronymic, so my ancestor's name was Bernat. As Bernat is a first name in France, Poland, Hungary, Czech rep, Slovakia and Germany: could my ancestor have been from one of those places?

Genealogy / Bernatowicz surname? (I am starting to wonder if anyone in my family was American?) [85]

Hi, I too have doubts that we are related. Too much of a surname difference, why would the name be changed? It may have been Anglicized but surely not made into a complete different surname. My family never left Poland, I was born in Poland myself. Please remember, there are over 1000 Bernatowiczs in Poland, even if your surname was changed: we are unfortunately not related.

P.S. This is my new account

Genealogy / Polish surnames of Hungarian / Ruthenian / Rusyn origin [14]

Bernatowicz is of Hungarian origin (atleast the root is), Szabowicz is of Hungarian origin (atleast the root is) and Akosowicz.

Merged: Is my surname of Ruthenian or Rusyn origin?

Here I am again, sent back by a wall of geology. Is 'Bernatowicz' of Ruthenian or Rusyn origin? Thanks

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

He thinks I'm Armenian because there was a family living in Lviv of Armenian descent. The guy's bonkers, to be fair. He said that his family is from Northern China but he's White British. Lol

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

I'm just speculating. My family comes from Wrocław, so it's probable that despise my surname being Polish (and my family) my surname and family is of German origin (Bernat is of German origin). All of the male family members on my paternal side have first names of German origin. Me being the exception.
