Life / If I move to a big city in Poland will I come across a lot of English speakers? [32]

You should be ok with just English, there are people on this forum who don't speak Polish after 20 years here and they seem fine.

I agree. You can get by with just English even if you go to one of the mini skleps to buy your bread. After all, we are all able to point at what we want and make ourselves understandable. However, Poles like it when you make a bit of an effort. They are aware of the fact that their language might not be easiest language to learn so they like it if you try. Even if you just ask for a "reklamowka" ( and i probably spelled that wrong) in the local shop, they will appreciate it.

But, to answer your question........... yes, you will be ok with just English in Poland.

Travel / Getting from Krakow to Warsaw [99]

The last time i took the train from Krakow to Warsaw it was 61 PLN and a few grosz. That was 1 1/2 years ago.

I just checked and found a price of 48 PLN with a "Wcześniej 20% - korzystna oferta " - which i guess is some kind of early booking discount. So i guess the normal price would not have changed much since the last time i took that route.

Work / Typical Post - A good salary in Rybnik - 3000 for part time in finance? [16]

how can I put this politely except each and every one of them laughed.

And that is ok. Of course, talking to your relatives via skype will give you a certain point of view, but remember, these are your relatives and they may not always be too negative when talking to you. Secondly, just because they don't do it, does not mean that the rest of Poland doesn't either. I have found it to be fairly common, to share things of own produce amongst the family. It is a kind of support and whether or not your family in Rybnik agrees, it is not that uncommon. I know of people in Lodz who come back home with a weeks worth of supply after visiting their parents or grandparents.

cost of utilities

-

they suggest allow 350PLN per month

Let's bring it up to 400. Now they two of them together have ca. 4100 zloty left for the month. With 4100 PLN, they each have a budget of 68 PLN per day which is "doable" but it also not necessarily a lot considering that roughly 20-25 PLN would be spend on travel to work and back (if using the car). Now we are looking at 43-48 PLN budget per day left. With 43-48 PLN left per day, he still hasn't eaten anything, bought any clothes, paid for health insurance (if not provided by the employer), paid for car insurance (if they will use a car) etc. etc. He also hasn't put any money aside for other unexpected expenses such as repairs in the apartment.

Lastly for now-we do dine out every day, in proper restaurants not fast food outlets.......you could as well if you so desired!

As a visitor to Rybnik you may very well do that but it hardly applies to someone living in Rybnik with an averge local salary.

you will be fine financially.

It seems to me that you have taken none of their expenses, which they will have, into consideration. My examples above may very well vary. He might use the train and buy a monthly commuter ticket but it will not vary from the above expenses too greatly. For someone who apparently visits Poland every year and appears to be spending a lot of time talking to relatives in Poland via skype, it is beyond me how you can suggest that they will be "fine" and can dine out every day on a 4100 zloty budget for both together. I am not saying that living on this budget is impossible, but it will be far from being "financially fine".

Feedback / Please do not quote excessively [118]

your personal insults

So, telling someone that they are wrong is an insult? :) :)

If you refer to a specific part, it's ok to quote this particular fragment or the most important keyword you focus on in your reply;

Ok, thank you for the clarification

johnny_reb, your problem is not the quoting from your posts, but your posts in general. Just because we are not able to quote from your post, does not mean that we will not continue to tell you how wrong you are about literally everything that you post on this forum.

But of course, showing you that you are wrong just means that we are trying to "belittle" you and make us look better than you, doesn't it?

Feedback / Please do not quote excessively [118]

Hi Admin, your forum = your rules. However, I do find quotes important, even if I reply to the last post of a thread. Quotes are part of how people in a forum communicate. They also help to respond to different parts of the last post separately.

You will find that long responses to the last posts of a thread without quotes will end up in confusion. I would, If i was you, reconsider this rule as it does not help. On the contrary but as I said, your forum = your rules.

Work / Typical Post - A good salary in Rybnik - 3000 for part time in finance? [16]

Possibly yes! But it is not just about the "sitting at home". It helps if you get the support of the family, such as many young Poles do and even if it is just getting the veggies from the families garden. Every little helps as Tesco says.

If you have the right family support, maybe 4.5k net is enough. If you dont have it, it is not and there is no way that you can dine out every night as "mcm1" has claimed.

Please read the new rule about quoting from the post above

News / SKM and surcharges - Fast Local Trains in Tri-City, Poland [25]

Like a good Pole, ripping one of the other of your wee "booklet" until you have reached the last one :) . Seen this many times in Polish trams when people take a pile of tickets out of their wallet, rip one off and put into the machine that reads the time when they got on...... i dont know the name of that machine

why should I pay extra to a guard who is paid for doing his job - which is to sell tickets? I am sorry - but I don't get it.

It seems that you really don't get it. The conductor's job is not to sell tickets but to check them. It is not the rail company's fault if you can not be bothered to go to the station 5 minutes earlier to buy your ticket upfront. Even in the UK passengers are required to be in possession of a valid ticket when boarding the train. Surely, it is not news to you now is it?

By the way, in Switzerland the SBB charges 10 francs for buying a ticket of the conductor........

Work / Typical Post - A good salary in Rybnik - 3000 for part time in finance? [16]

dine out every evening at 6k gross for two people, taking into consideration that you have to save for any unforeseen expenses such as, let's say repairs on the apartment? Forget it. With 6k gross, you'd have roughly 4.5k left for two people or 75 zlotych per day per person if we take a 30 day month. Yes, you can eat out every day but you don't have anything left for anything else.

I am a professional

I've been offered a job for 3000zl gross

Sorry but what is your profession?

My wife will also be working and she will be making 2500zl-3000zl per month.

If I was earning 3000zl too would this be enough?

Let's make it 6k gross for the two of you. Even if you don't have to pay rent or a mortgage, i am not sure if that is enough to live as a family. It might get you by but it won't allow for any big steps, even if it is just the repairs you have to carry out in your apartment or any extra expenses that come with it. You won't be able to afford a holiday, a meal in a restaurant will be a luxury (although it could only cost you 50 zlotych per person), leave alone spoiling your wife to something special.

All in all......is it enough? I would say no!

Work / Salary in Gdansk at a multinational Company, junior position, with Hungarian language [7]

junior accountant

3000 is fairly ok for a Junior Accountant with Hungarian in what i assume is in a SSC or BPO You have to remember that Hungarian is not one of the top paid languages. So, all in all it is not bad and it will get you by in Gdansk just fine. Of course, you won't be able to sip champagne and have strawberries for breakfast every day but overall you will have an ok life with it. That is if the money is only spend on yourself i.e. if you don't have any dependents you have to get through with this salary too.

Law / I got an EU permanent residence permit and it is a flimsy piece of paper [26]

Travel within the Shengen area it would probably be ok, it is NOT a valid document for travel to the UK.

Of course you can travel to the UK with a Polish ID card. Many Poles use it when traveling back and forward between Poland and the UK. As a general rule, citizens of any EEA country (including Switzerland) can travel to another EEA country using their national ID card.

Australia / Have you moved from Australia to Poland? please share your opinion... [43]

Yes Harry, thats what I was thinking about. Its the only think thats putting me off with moving to Poland. I live in Australia and we dont get things like the Ukrainian situation thats happening near this country. Would just like to hear your opinion about this situation, weather it has any effect on people in Poland or the future.

Hi ew, in my opinion, there is no threat in this conflict spilling anywhere beyond the borders of the Donbass region (eastern Ukraine). We have had similar conflicts in Europe in the past 25 years and they remained local conflicts. For example in Moldova, when pro-Russia separatists fought for independence of "Transnistria" from Moldova. Since the conflict, it has been relatively quiet in that region and the neighbouring countries were not affected. I would assume that the conflict in Donbass ends very similar.

Hi, maxmodels.pl is a good website for what you may be searching for. Some of my friends use it to advertise their modeling portfolio. Apparently it is quite popular in Poland.

Work / How to find work in Warsaw "if u don't speak Polish" ! [176]

When speaking of Infosys in particular, you will find that they are anything else but a call center. Most of their clients / engagements focus on process outsourcing in either finance or procurement so no technical support, selling things etc.

Might have to go the English Business teacher route.

I am not sure how you come to the conclusion that you are over qualified to work in BPO but then want to go and teach English.

I have 2 B.S. degrees in; Business Management, Strategy, Economics Minor, and finishing my thesis for MBA. Also, have owned a couple businesses. Someday I'll finish the PhD route ;)

That is not really going to help you much, at least not in the beginning. There are plenty of highly educated people in Lodz, or Poland in general for that matter, so the question is why they would hire you and not a local person who also speaks Polish?

Work / How to find work in Warsaw "if u don't speak Polish" ! [176]

Any ideas for a native English speaker living in Lodz with business and economics degrees from AACSB accredited universities.

Here are some job listings in Lodz. As you can see, Infosys is constantly hiring. For some roles you need an additional language, for others English would be sufficient. You could see it as a temporary solution while you keep your eye out for something else.

Law / Setting up small business in Poland? [191]

Let me tell you if its really all that you want ? you can do it ! You will find every piece of information regarding registration of business in Poland.

You are right. It is not difficult to set up a business in Poland.

In fact, setting up the business is probably the easiest part and as you have mentioned correctly, anyone can do it.

But when people say "it is very difficult", they don't necessarily mean the actual set up / registration of the business. They mean making the new business a success. I have not been a member of this forum for too long but in this short period of time I have read many posts from "dreamers" about opening kebab shops, bars, restaurants, hostels, kiosks, etc. etc. etc. and they believe that it will be successful.

I have said this a few times now. Poland, when you come here on holiday and Poland when you actually have to earn a living are two different things Now I have to read this :

I am planning to start a small take-out/kiosk in Warsaw. I will be visiting there in a few weeks to conduct further research. I am curious, how difficult is it to find a small location(6x4m2) to practice such a business?

Where does the "plan" to open a small kiosk in Warsaw come from, if the location is not yet even known? I would have assumed that the idea of opening a kiosk would be born by knowing the location and the feeling that a kiosk is exactly what is missing at that location. Not the other way around.

So yes, if you want to set up a business, go ahead, it is easy, anyone can do it. But that still does not mean that you will earn one single grosz from it.

Real Estate / What are possible price ranges (rent) for studio and 1 bedroom apartments in Krakow? [20]

It is going to be around 1500 including all bills and administration fees.

That's a very good deal for Krakow. I lived in Krakow - now in Lodz (so went the opposite way to yours :) ) and I can tell you that 1500 all in is something you should not take too long to think about.

Uniwersytet Jagielloński campus

If am not mistaken, that's bang in the centre of Krakow. Just another reason to take the flat for 1500.

Work / How much is a salary of a travel agency employee in Warsaw, Poland? [8]

But it's still more valuable answer than your comment.

That's up to the OP to decide :)

But seeing that the original question was about salary in a travel agency to which you have answered with daily income of pilots, guides etc. i would find it very surprising if your answer would have made the OP any wiser than he / she was before :)

Life / Are Poles mentally more Eastern European or Western European? [171]

Texas09, if you ever wonder what it's like for a Pole to deal with a Western foreigner then read my exchange with JollyRomek... Sometimes it's like talking to deaf people.

Because Poles are always right. Have you ever noticed that? And if someone dares to challenge you, it's always someone else's fault. Never the fault of the Polish people though. The fact that you can not integrate in Germany, or the Uk or Ireland....fault of the local people, not the Polish people.

In Poland you are even worse. Can't get a promotion because the "western guy" got it. Must be the fault of the western guy because the poor Poles always get discriminated upon.

You poor poor people.
