Life / Polish way of life? [34]

American way of life is a load of propaganda created by corporations and big businesses that are worried Americans will stop buying their products. It is a joke and a farce. And anybody that disagrees with the "american way of life" is a communist. It is freaking pathetic.

Life / Polish way of life? [34]

America has a deep culture which is what Polonius is explaining. Canada has a very superficial culture. As an example you yourself refer to yourself not as a Canadian but as a North American.

WHAT!! I have never ever ever referred myself to being North American. I have said "in North America" or similar but I have never and will never refer myself as being North American.

And there is superficiality in ever country. give your head a shake. but America has the market on that one. including as far as saying that it boosts the economy. and people believe it.

Pointing out the realities of Poland is not bashing it. I have lived here for over 10 years, married to a Pole and I am raising two very proud to be Polish/Canadian children.

I also point out the problems with Canada but seeing as I haven't lived there for over 10 years some of my points are out of date.

Putting your head in the sand does nothing to fix the problems that exist here. Discussing them is a start to finding a remedy. And the most bashing in my experience comes from Poles themselves. Probably why I am asked on a daily basis why I live in Poland.

News / Polish scientist discovers drug for leukemia [15]

interesting. I will be watching how it plays out because apparently scientists in Canada have already found a cure for cancer but it is being blocked by pharma companies because they have the most to lose.

you can google "canada finds cure for cancer" yourselves and loads of stuff pops up.

and the money it would lose.

I think the cure for cancer has been created some time ago but big pharm companies are blocking its production. This isn't a so called "conspiracy theory" --it is a reality.

Let's think about this for a second. Chemo drugs are freaking expensive. I have a friend who last year went through a 10 month round of chemo, fortunately his company paid for the drugs because they are not covered in Canadian health care and they are flipping expensive. Even the generic drugs.

So if a cure for cancer were to come around- who has the most to lose? Drug companies- and considering drug companies spend billions on advertising ----this would be a huge dent in their profits.

So, I hope Poland plays stubborn (not difficult at all in this country) and doesn't succumb to the tactics of big pharma companies. Because it truly would be amazing.

are there actually Polish pharmaceutical companies??

Life / TVP axes Dobranocka [21]

So now that they have done this, what do kids have to watch as children's programs now?

It is utter crap. Personally, I like the simplicity of the dobranocka cartoons. They actually have collectors figurines of all those characters. We have Bolek i Lolek.

I have two girls and they watch pre teen disney shows, they are done with cartoons unless it is Phineus and Ferb. But they don't watch violent or aggressive style cartoons......I think that is more for boys really.

no. Health care is covered via taxes but chemo is a drug and is not covered unless you have insurance either corporate or private. But.....drugs are not as expensive as in other countries. Drug company advertising is illegal in Canada. So, as a patient you can ask for a generic brand and the hospital will give it to you.

Polish kids can now watch a bunch of foreign crap. Yet another of Poland's iconic institutions has bitten the dust. Long live globalism! (Not!)

who is responsible for globalism exactly? let's see. it is cartoon network, disney and all the other shiite the kids are now watching.....where does this come from? I already know the answer so don't bother.

News / Professor Zygmund Bauman, Commie-Jew, shouted down [79]

Or perhaps Polonius wishes to perpetuate the false 'Borat stereotype' of Poles having a habit of being anti-semitic morons who like nothing better than to throw the Jew down the well.

you have totally nailed it. That is exactly what it is.

Life / Expat, immigrant, foreigner. Not all foreigners in Poland are expats. [84]

As for numbers I would say there are more Spanish,French,Benelux,Italians and Scand's, there are certainly less Brits and Irish on a expatriate package here. I base this on the schools my kids attend which I believe is a true marker.

agreed, however I have found that most of the Irish expats have their kids at the American school rather than the British.
And I know of two people that have pulled out of shale- they were American....gladly the whole fracking crap is proving most difficult for them.

Why do you need to rent a car? I have been there and there are loads of taxi's and limo's ready to take you where you need to go.

Life / Poland's Environment, recycling [79]

who cares if companies are making money from it. Poland is full of garbage and it needs to be cleaned up, unfortunately no Polish company is willing to take the lead on this so a foreign company comes in and does the job. big deal. Perhaps those anti Remondis would like to start their own garbage collection company? No, then shut it.

rinsing the crap off the recyclables is no biggie. seriously? How lazy can you be?

Personally, I think garbage collection should be organized by the municipality (gmina) and included in property taxes. Like in Canada. My city in Canada is one of the greenest. There is a blue box for plastics and metals, and a green box for compost and black for paper products.

Showing respect for the country you live in shouldn't be a big deal.

I, for one, am tired of seeing garbage lining the streets and in the forest close to my house. It is disgusting.

I know in Canada that the reason you need to rinse the containers first is that if they are not rinsed and left to go mouldy they could pose problems for those who work their, namely with mould spores in the air.

Life / Poland's Environment, recycling [79]

Most of the changes that are forced by EU regulations are far beyond the realities of everyday life here in Poland.

well then Poland should stop taking EU money and stand on its own.

Recycling is something that can be done by everybody no matter what their income is. Any excuses are bullshiit.

One of my biggest pet hates about Poland is the garbage everywhere and signs (reklama) everywhere. It makes Warsaw ugly, and it is not. Clean up the flipping garbage and take down the signs. That is it.

It takes a bit longer in Poland, my estimate is that the mentality is about 15 years behind.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with making money off of garbage..... I remember having a conversation with an American who despised the whole "eko business" but yet had no problem with companies making money while creating garbage.

Very soon, a clever Pole will get the fact that there is a crap load of money to be made off of recycling

The biggest problem - look at the garbage containers in Poland. You can see through all garbage. And they are usually located in the central locations of town/villages. Looks ugly. But someone is saving money by making containers from wire instead of from full-cover plastic.

so you would rather look at garbage thrown on the sides of roads, in the parks and forests and generally everywhere??

newpip: Perhaps those anti Remondis would like to start their own garbage collection company? No, then shut it.
you don't know the company and neither you know their policies. You are not in a position for saying anything concerning that

so you're the local garbage man? Until a Polish company steps up to the plate and figures out the money in garbage collection--there is little selection. But I am a huge supporter of it being paid in property taxes. If you can afford a house you can afford to pay for garbage.

no, but i don't want to pay any penny to a German company which treats its employees like slaves, pays them very low wages while simultaneously making record profit and takes the earned money out of Poland. Are you insane?

hmm.....I can't imagine people are fighting to become garbage men. If they don't like it then go to a different garbage company. You do know that this is not a high skill job, right?

And there are plenty of Polish companies that treat people like slaves and take their profits out of Poland too.

And then there are plenty of Poles working in foreign countries that take their money back to Poland. And of course there are many Poles claiming benefits in UK that no longer live in UK.

So, where do you draw the line at your boycotts?

ok, so then it is up to the Polish gov't to police the way foreign companies do business. Until then....we can boycott and that is about it.
