News / What's the stupidest question asked about Poland? [414]

still black and white television

I regret that my fellow countrymen are so ignorant about Poland , but you have to remember that we have had a lot of years of anti comunist propaganda in the UK...We were told over and over what terrible people were on the other side of the Berlin wall , what terrible lives they had , how lucky we were to be born in a free country....A lot of us believed it....When i was a soldier i stood on the Berlin wall and never in a million years did i ever imagine that one day i would live on the other side of that wall...Don,t be insulted when people say such things , just try to educate them , invite them to Poland , they will love it as much as i , and all my friends from the Uk that have visited me do.....The most common question i get is....Poland...where is it exactly....???

OK....a question for all you Polish people....When i was born in England many moons ago my parents gave me the name Ian , However since coming to Polska a few years back i have been known to all my Polish friends as Jan...I quite like being known as Jan , and i tend to give this as my name now , even to English people....What i would like to ask you Polish experts is what other forms or variations of Jan is there , you know , like Janek , Janusz etc thanks...

Life / LPG fuel - car conversion cost and process in POLAND [19]

It depends on where you get it done. There are some good and some not so good people doing lpg conversions in Poland........I had my Rangerover done in UK and it cost me 1300 quid , its about half that in Poland.....Your best bet is to ask people local to where you live and go to a garage that has a reputation for doing a good job....You can get problems if the job is not done by experts.....I have not had any problems with my conversion in three years and saved a fortune on fuel.....If you are buying a car in Poland , get one that has already been converted and is running ok...The price for conversion depends on if it has carbs or fuel injection , Good luck...

Life / Prices of cars in Poland? [88]

have 8 airbags in my car

In Poland you carry a box of ballons which you hurriedly blow up if you suspect an accident is about to occur.....Unfortunatly , the blowing up of the balloons has been the cause of several accidents here.....

Hello Britguy....Its a hard life over here if you don,t go with the flow....I too am a Brit living in Poland , and not a million mls from you....Life in Poland can seem very strange compared to the UK....You should try to be more a part of Polish life , try to find some good Polish friends that speak a little English....Its not easy , i know mate , i had the same problem when first got here , and i didn,t have a Polish wife to help me get through it Even now life is not easy for me , but i have made my mind up i am staying , so mentally i am a Polish resident...Give it a bit longer before you give up on it....PM me if you want , and i will give you my email address , we can moan about Poland together.....Jan.....

Love / My Polish wife doesn't want to move to the UK with me - what to do? [96]

I am very entrepreneurial in vision,

If you are entrepreneurial , and the Poles are not then you have every chance of making a good business without a lot of competition...The future as i see it for Poland is tourism , lots of Brits coming here and giving me , and my Polish workers lots of dosh in order to enjoy the unspoilt beauty of Poland....Sadly i have all the idea,s and contacts to do this , but not as yet the money....But i am lioving here , so its a start.....If you are a bit more sorted you could look at the same possibilities i have......I don,t want to give all my idea,s away , but for example....A weeks horse riding in the UK is going to set somebody back the best part of 800 quid....Half that , and even with the expense of organising the Polish riding stable , running around booking hotels for people , and shipping them from place to place , a group of ten people will bring you a nice bit of cash....Your wife can sort out the bits that need to be done in Polish , and you can spend your time chatting in your own language....Its only one of many idea,s i have....i am sure you can think of more.....But you are going to have to learn to tell these tourists what a wonderfull place Poland is......that might be a bit tricky.......For me its easy , i love it here....

Love / My Polish wife doesn't want to move to the UK with me - what to do? [96]

Hi Britguy yeah , there is red tape in every country , but i think its worth giving it a go , and if you have a Polish wife you will find it a bit easier...Besides , in Poland the many years of red tape means that the Poles are experts at getting around it...I am in the north west of Poland near a town called Ostrowice , just off the road between Drawsko pomorskie , and Polczyn zdroj , about 17 kms from Polczyn zdroj....I have been living here two years on an old farm i bought.....

there are a million poles in england doing that already!

I hope so , but most of the young ones in Poland keep telling me that Poland has no future , and they want to stay in UK....It would be nice to think that national pride will make them stick up for Poland when they meet English strangers , but you can,t blame Brits for thinking....if Poland is so great , what are all you Poles doing in UK...????

Food / Why carp for Polish Christmas? [157]

When i first came to Poland i was told about this tradition , and the fact it was kept in the bath for a few days...I knew the bit about eating carp for Christmas was true , as i had read it on the internet , but i thought the part about keeping it in the bath was a wind up....My Polish friend Aneta and me had a long history of telling each other complete lies about each others national traditions , so i thought this was one of her wind ups....She took geat pleasure in showing me , not one but two large carp in the bath at her parents house...Not long afterwards i took Kuba the family cat into the bathroom to show him the fish...he was very interested indeed...After a while i took him out of the bathroom , firmly closed the door , and we went downstairs...Unfortunatly Kuba , who is a rather beefy tomcat decided the fish were worth another look...While we were all busy downstairs he returned to the bathroom , swung on the doorhandle untill the door opened , and dragged one of the fish out of the bath...The fish was almost as big as he was , but it didn,t stop him giving it a good beating from which it died....You can guess who got the blame for all this......
