Travel / Which city is better to visit: Warsaw or Krakow? [169]

If it's a choice between Warsaw and Krakow ..... it has to be Krakow !

I think it has one of the most beautiful 'ryneks' in Poland , and I have a sentimental reason for liking Krakow ... I got engaged there :o)

History / 'Battle of Britain' won thanks to Polish aces !! [158]

Their skill and bravery in winning the Battle of Britain is legendary, but many of the RAF's Spitfire and Hurricane pilots were actually so short on training they were unable to shoot straight, claims historian Dr Anthony Cumming !

An inadequate training programme meant many pilots were sent into battle with just ten hours of solo flying under their belts, and some were ordered into battle without ever having fired their guns, and unable to 'shoot straight'due to 'completely inadequate' gunnery training.

The RAF's two top aces during the Battle of Britain were Seregeant J Frantisek and Flying Officer Witold Urbanowicz; both had been trained in foreign air forces !

Sounds to me that without these Polish aces the outcome may have been very different - I read somewhere that 1 in 3 RAF pilots were Polish.

This article can be found in the latest edition of BBC History Magazine, and there is bit on page 6 of Tuesday's Daily Mail.

Life / Wszystkich Świętych (All Saints Day) // Dzien Zaduszny (All Souls day) [86]

Living in London , Poles will be attending to the graves of their loved ones on November 1st & 2nd; in Poland Nov 1st is a national holiday, although most do not go to work on 2nd November either.

Most of the cemetaries with Polish graves in England will have special prayers held by the local parish priest this coming Sunday.

Gunnersbury Cemetary in West London has many Polish graves, including my grandparents, and also Katyn Memorial to remember all those Polish officers murdered by the Russians in WWII

UK, Ireland / Polish immigration in UK [491]

no poloish immigration to the uk , british jobs for british workers

.... but what about the jobs the lazy on the dole/benefits Brits don't want to do ??

....and what about foreign investors buying Polish property/land and pushing prices up ... is it a surprise Poles will come to UK to take jobs with better wages ?

Most Poles that I know come to UK to earn an honest living and not scrounge off the benefits system ..... unlike some other group of immigrants whose main purpose is to milk the system available here in UK.

There are many articles about UK families happy to have 8-10 kids and live off the system ..... one recent such article stated the mother was hoping her child would be diagnosed with a 'disability' so they would get more benefits !

In general I believe the Poles who are over here in UK are hardworking and an asset to society :o)

Law / Dying in Poland - Inheritance tax ? [62]

I know that in UK inheritance tax is a burden that is now affecting most of the 'middle classes', and not the very rich for which it was originally intended. Although in many cases the 'very rich' have lawyers/accountants who can advise them how to avoid this tax !

Here in UK i believe there is a tax threshold of approx £250 000, after which the government takes 40% of the remainder. This inheritance tax is not paid by surviving spouse, but by children or other beneficiaries.

On my last visit to Poland I was told that that the inheritance laws are more beneficial in Poland to beneficiaries than they are in UK; as long as the will is disclosed within 3-6 months then very close relatives of the deceased pay little or no inheritance tax.

Has anyone got any concrete information on this matter ?

UK, Ireland / Are Polish people moving back home from the UK? [68]

the more that go home the better it is for the british

... and what about other immigrant groups ? .....Somalians etc...

The Poles are in general contributing to society by working and not freeloading on benefits like other groups that could be mentioned.

Overall I believe that Brits have nothing against Poles coming to work in this country, and Poles are viewed in a very positive manner.

In my view it's the Islamic fanatics who spew hatred against the country which is giving them so much who should leave this island !

UK, Ireland / Are Polish people moving back home from the UK? [68]

Britain seems to have an ‘open door’ policy on immigration;

I accept there is a burden on services such as NHS and Education due to the recent mass immigration, but one cannot blame one particular group like Polish immigrants. Just wait till the Romanians/Gypsies start coming over in number.

There has been a large Polish population in UK since after WWII, and it’s only natural that Poles will come over to UK to seek work where their salaries will be 4-5 times that what they could achieve in Poland. Living expenses in London and South-East are very high and the conditions in which the Poles live and work are not always ideal, but they make the best of the situation and are happy to make sacrifices in order to achieve their goals…. a better future for themselves and their family, either back in Poland or settling down and making UK their new home.

I believe some Poles will stay, but the majority will return to Poland within 5-10yrs.

I also believe there is a mass exodus of Brits from this island, mainly due to this country losing it’s own identity and becoming too multicultural. There is one thing accepting other countries traditions and beliefs, but not at the expense of one’s own !!

Lots of Brits have left these shores and formed their own ‘little Britain’ in Spain, France, US, etc where they are free to fly their own flag without being frowned upon !

We talk about Polish people being disillusioned with their country, but it’s not much different here in England ….. every year the figures are released on how many Brits have left for a better life overseas … and it’s on the increase !

I was born in UK, but have Polish parents who settled in England after WWII – they planned to return to Poland but circumstances meant it was safer to stay in England.

Many of my friends who have a similar background to myself(bilingual Polish/English) have decided to leave England and make a new life for their families in Poland – I know of 3 such families which are moving over to Poland for good next year …… and in 1-2 years I will do the same :o))

UK, Ireland / Polish immigration in UK [491]

you know it's remembrance sunday today and we went to war because germany invaded poland and now 60 years on poland are invading us , just something to think about

why not take a few minutes to think about and be thankful to those brave British and Polish men and women who died so we all could live in a free, democratic society ...

.... otherwise we'd all be speaking German now !

UK, Ireland / Polish immigration in UK [491]

poles are communists

there are communists in every country, but to say Poles are communist is totally wrong and a sweeping generalisation and I take offence to such a statement.

If I were you, i would be less concerned about the Poles who have come over to UK and earn an honest living, but be more concerned about the Muslims who are trying to undermine and erode British society.

UK is Christian , yet there is more and more anti-Christian sentiment being heard from various groups, predominantly Muslim.

the country is going to the dogs england is losing it's identity ,people we need to come out of the EU as soon as possible

Here I have to agree with you ..... England is going to the dogs ...... but not as a result of the Poles coming to work here in UK - England has been 'going to the dogs' as you say for long before 2004, when Poland was accepted into EU. UK has been going into decline regarding NHS, Education etc .. for the last 10 years !

The present Labour government is responsible for the decline in Britains 'Britishness' and national identity !

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

Polish jokes started in America because the Polish immigrants who came here were those who didn't know how to read or write.

this is what I was told ......

Americans make jokes of Poles, the same way English make jokes of the Iriish !

UK, Ireland / Poles leave Britain to return to Poland [89]

If the conservative government get into power this year which I know they will it won't be just the Polish leaving Britian it will be me too

I have heard of many people (Brits) who have already left Britain, and this is due to the present Labour government and their policies.

I for one will be very pleased to see the back of U-turn Brown and the rest of his cronies and will welcome the Conservatives, but whether they can do much to put right the mess that Labour has created is doubtful - Labour has really brought this country to its' knees .... and it will take a long time to put it right !

Anyhow, it will be another year at least before we see a General Election, so we have to see how much more damage Labour can inflict in the meantime !

UK, Ireland / A collection of noimmigration's threads or "STAY AWAY from BRITAIN" [978]

noimmigration ….

Why don’t you vent your anger against the present British government and not the Poles who had every right to come over to the UK in search of work.

Your ignorance and bigotry astounds me ….. your sick mind worries me, in that people with your warped views and opinions are allowed to roam the streets and spew this hatred towards innocent people.

You are a disgrace to mankind, a poor excuse of a human being and one day I am sure you will get what you truly deserve !

I assume that's the fee for finding a tenant and not for ongoing management of the property.

The management of rented property is an area I am looking to get involved in also when I finally come over to live in Poland :o)

Life / Is the word "Polack"rascist? [185]

I can't see why we should be offended if someone calls us Polaks or Pollacks.

English people refer to Americans as Yanks, Septics (ie.rhyming slang Septic Tank),
Aussies call Brits Poms .... maybe someone could explain why ?;

I don't see anything derogatory in these terms; it's only when one places fu**ing or some other obscene term along with it that I have a problem :o)

Most bad moments I've experienced in here was caused by people like noimmigration and Arise St George.

Unfortunately you'll always find a few 'undesirables' on forums, best to ignore them and not take what they say too seriously or to heart ....

Love / Married polish women:Are they hot? [79]

The ‘boy’ part in your nickname is very appropriate; when you become a ‘man’ I’d like to hear your opinions on beautiful women :o)

dudes young chicks are hot but once over 30 thier ugly and old

Making such comments just shows how shallow, childish and immature you are.

How old are you ….. 16 .. 17 ?

I agree that some women are more beautiful than others, but then again this is very subjective as everyone has their own perception of beauty.

To say that a beautiful woman turns ‘ugly and old’ when they pass their 30th birthday really is a ridiculous comment – when you get a little bit older sonny, you’ll look back on these comments you have made and realise what a load of crap you have written!

I have a 6 yr old who has been using the word ‘dude’ with his classmates for the past few months as they thought it was cool; however I have recently noticed that most of them laugh at someone who uses this too frequently

Just to correct you on some English …. it should be they’re and not their :o) I know we all make some silly typos on here, but you really should know the difference between these.

Real Estate / House prices in Poland to drop more or rise again? [228]

I have been looking to purchase a detached property in one of the many gated communities in or around Warsaw.

Only last month one of the developers contacted me to offer new prices which were 20-25% lower than the prices listed in summer 2008.

It appears that very few are buying at the inflated 2008 prices. I have been keeping an eye on several developments and nearly all properties available last summer are still listed as available. Some of the new projects are slow to get off the ground, with developers websites contantly being 'under construction' with no new information available.

I am expecting further discounts as developers start running into financial difficulties.

Travel / Seven Secret Wonders of Poland [17]

maybe the word 'secret' is the key and they put on the list only less known things

You're right McCoy. I wanted to compile a list of less well known attractions in Poland (even Elblag was pushing it a little).

Wieliczka is VERY well know and so didn't make the list.

This is what I was thinking at first, but when you included Kosciuszko Mound in Krakow then I felt you should have included Wieliczka also :o)

My wife, who is from Wrocław, but has been living in London for the past 9 years can't remember the dwarves; were they introduced quite recently?

Just found this on the internet ....

"They appeared on the streets of the city in August 2005. Their history is connected with the Orange Alternative movement and the year 1982. It is then that some dwarfs with funny hats and smiling faces were painted as a graffiti covering anti-Communist slogans. The present day dwarfs are statues sculpted by Tomasz Moczek, graduate of the local Fine Arts Academy. There are as many as five dwarfs in the city. Each of the dwarfs has a name, e.g. Dwarf the Sleepyhead in sw. Mikolaja Street or Dwarf the Butcher in Jatki Street."

Food / What's on YOUR Wigilia table? [20]

Can't wait for this evening; we usually start Wigilia at around 6pm.

We have variety of fish, pike in galaretka (jelly), carp, salmon, chopped herring with apple and we also introduced giant prawns for those who aren't too keen on the pike or carp. Polish bread is a must :o)

There is also zupa grzybowa (mushroom soup) with croutons and also czerwony barszcz (beetroot soup) with mushroom dumplings.
There is a choice of pierogi, either stuffed with potato and cheese or with cabbage, accompanied either with sour cream or mushroom sauce.

We drink wine and vodka with the meal, but I know some Poles who say the meal should be alcohol-free.

On Christmas Day I love to have Wigilia left-overs for breakfast, especially the pike in galaretka with Polish bread and a nice glass of white wine.

At around 4pm we settle down to eat our traditional English Christmas Dinner, roast turkey with all the the trimmings, variety of stuffing (my favourite is sage/onion), mashed potatoes, chipolatas, chipolatas wrapped in bacon (pigs in blankets) brussel sprouts, carrots, roast parsnip, cranberry or apple sauce or gravy.

Best Wishes to Everyone on Polish Forums,

May You all have a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
