Life / A rant on customer service in Poland [42]

Do they really give a damn though? Their slightly better paid supervisors tell them, "Collect coins, collect coins. I don't know why, just get them. Don't worry about the lengthening queue, those bastards are just customers anyway." We could go on and on, couldn't we? Service; customer. Do these words collocate? Still, try Russia.

They always want the exact amount and are quite unpleasant if they have to give change.

Perhaps the discovery of the Higgs Boson will explain this.

UK, Ireland / Crying Polish truck driver on British roads is Internet hit [269]

Is there anywhere convenient for a truck to stop in GB?

Yes.

Why is this guy thinking the side of the road is the only place?

Maybe because he is a) overworked b) stupid

What is Britain doing to make a safe place for these trucks to pull over when they need to?

Truckers driving in the UK have it really easy. Why are you siding with this fool and attempting to blame UK? Just because he happens to be Polish? If so, have you met Monia? You'd get along well.

Telfcat, where I live, people are emotional. They cuss and carry on when people frustrate them. Some don't, but a lot do. A lot of people dislike cops as well. It's true not everyone reacts like that, but that kind of reaction is far from uncommon.

Too much caffeine, perhaps! Where I live (Poland) people are usually in control of their emotions. We don't like cops much either but when we get busted for a road offence we take it on the chin.

He wasn't acting that strangely. His behavior was not irrational.

Imagine a British truck driver responding to being stopped by Polish cops and behaving like that. Would you, honestly, say the same?

I saw something on British TV a few years ago about HGV drivers from all over Europe driving in Britain. One image stands out in my memory. A Polish driver said (incognito) that he had to drive crazy hours because his boss could easily find a replacement if he didn't. He said, "One day I will fall asleep at the wheel. It's not if; it's when." I haven't seen all of the film under discussion, but perhaps this guy was one of those drivers who are under enormous pressure to deliver. That might explain his histrionics.

Off-Topic / The West Highland Way - 96 miles through some of Scotland most beautiful routes. [28]

I've just been reading Ranulph Fiennes' book about his Transpolar expedition, in which he said that Scottish lumberjacks use Avon's Skin So Soft, or something like that, against the wee fukcers (midges, not American ladies). Ever heard that? I wonder if it would work with mossies.

Life / Are Polish roads really this bad? [237]

Just drove down through Romania, they have the Poles beat "hands down".

There are loads of places with worse driving conditions and worse drivers. Things are far from perfect in Poland, but you can see significant improvements year by year. I just wish they'd get rid of all the roadside crosses. I'm sure the boy racers see them as a challenge.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

The best-qualified workers will be offered monthly salaries of as much as zł.7,000

Any idea where I can do a welding course?

Life / Wroclaw Stadium and the Queen gig. [20]

it's not Queen without FM, it's like a tribute band.

Spot on. They're just milking nostalgia. I was a big Who fan until Keith Moon died. It just wasn't the same after (how many drummers could that be said about?).

A sample of usual bashing of some Polish driver, driving a truck on Polish plates, they could not resist to leave it as they would do it if it was on English plates.

So this guy was victimized because and only because he was Polish, right? Nothing to do with stopping an HGV on the hard shoulder. Thanks mona, now we know what a terrible deal Poles get from the anti-Polish British police. ffs

Life / A rant on customer service in Poland [42]

Mekong Duck at Noodle w Pudle and there was no duck.

I had this recently in Galeria Alfa in Białystok. There were three little slivers of duck; just a taste. Noodle w Pudle is a nice idea but 22PLN for a carton of noodles? I go to a little place called Asia to go near work and get chicken with noodles for just under 10PLN. And they offer a wicked hot sauce and chopsticks.

Food / What's more popular in Poland beer or vodka? [41]

Let's not forget that the consumption of wine in Poland has seen a phenomenal increase in the last decade. When I first came here the choice in most supermarkets was restricted to awful Bulgarian wine, and maybe some Spanish or French stuff at inflated prices. Fresco was the wine I bought most of because it was relatively cheap and the quality (low) was at least consistent. Today there is a good choice in most places, including a lot of South African and South American wine, although I still feel I pay too much for too little. I rarely see genuinely pleasant wine for under 25PLN a bottle. And that's the price of a bottle of good vodka.

Travel / What can Poland do to attract more tourists? Llamas farm? [65]

where the waiter's teeth match the cobbles on the street outside.

Quite right. Anyone can have Hollywood teeth. The cobble effect makes a mouth more interesting, especially for dentists on holiday.

I like cruising slowly along the ruined roads

Each to his own, I suppose. Today I had to drive 30km on a back road that was more hole than tarmac.

It might bring money to otherwise poor areas, but increased tourism would devastate all the things I like about Poland.

I have to agree. I live in a beautiful but underdeveloped (tourist-wise) part of the country. This place needs jobs, but I'd rather see hard jobs, if you know what I mean, rather than waiters and guides.

Genealogy / my Polish Grandfather in Hitler Youth? HOW? [65]

Please note that the above does not apply if you discover that you are actually English, for as we all know to be born an Englishman is to win first prize in God's lottery.

Christ on a bike. Harry, do you really need to throw the trolls red meat with that awful Rhodes quote?

Genealogy / my Polish Grandfather in Hitler Youth? HOW? [65]

I discovered he has a German Identity Card of him in the Hitler youth!!!!!!

Don't beat yourself up over this. It's nothing to do with you now.

It says he was accepted into The Hitler Youth in Krotoszyn, Warthegau in January 1943 at 14 years of age

Perhaps along with the current pope. If I'd been a fourteen-year-old boy at that time and in that place, I'd have been drafted into the same rotten boy scout gang, whether I wanted to or not.

Love / Are there any swingers club in Poland? [52]

poppers

The last time I used amyl nitrate was in 1991, at a birthday party on a boat on the Thames. I fell in the river trying to save a drunk friend. My DJ got a good soaking but my wife sold it on Allegro when I got too fat for it, about two years ago, so I haven't done too bad, weightwise. My learned friend tells me that poppers are used for anatomical enhancement in circles more cosmopolitan than those I currently move in. Whatever blows your skirt up, I say.
