Polonius3 1,000 | 12,446 5 Jul 2012 #3Wiglia is too special and solemn an occasion -- the single-most important day of the year -- to turn it itnto yet another booze-up. But not everybody observes total abstinence. Many allow a bit of wine or krupnik (a hot honey-spice-cordial), but in general it is not an occasion for 'serious' (?!) drinking. Except amongst the more primitve unedacated types (lumpenproletariat, menial workers, farm hands, etc.) who can't imagine a celebration wtihout booze.
OP milky 13 | 1,657 5 Jul 2012 #4Except amongst the more primitve unedacated typesDo you mean PIS supporters?? why would freethinkers be sober on Christmas?

boletus 30 | 1,366 6 Jul 2012 #7This topic was already discussed here: Why is Polish Christmas on the 24th?.Experiences varied.
OP milky 13 | 1,657 6 Jul 2012 #9This topic was already discussed here:not really, I was told its a post 1989 tradition brought in by the Polish Taliban.
boletus 30 | 1,366 6 Jul 2012 #10Many people participated in the discussion about boozing on Christmas Eve, including teflcat and myself. But fine with me if you are too lazy to check the link I posted. And you were told wrong. Old tradition had it that there should be neither meat nor alcohol served until midnight of Dec the 24th. Some abstained from any meal whatsoever during that day until Vigil Supper (at 6 p.m. or so). There are dozens of websites with info like this. See for example this one, randomly selected: wikihow.com/Keep-Polish-Christmas-Traditions-in-Your-HomeNothing to do with 1989. It's more about erosion of old practice. But I do not care one way or another what people do at their homes, as it is harmless. This is not like sailing and boozing, which is plain stupid and dangerous. In this case I will be your worst Talib ever, as I will report you on the spot to the police.
