Wroclaw Stadium and the Queen gig.

Yesterday Queen + Adam Lambert played Wroclaw's stadium.

it was the first time queen had ever played in poland.

the support bands were power of trinity, IRA and mona.

after the concert i never heard a bad word about lambert. he is a natural for the band.

---------------------------------------------------------------------- -------

getting to the stadium couldn't be easier, unless you're in a car. the line of traffic to the car park was long and slow.

there are various buses and a number of trams, which seem to be routed through plac jan pawel II

public transport leaves one with a two minute walk to the main entrance.

the usual rules of entry include no drinks. but you won't go thirsty as beer can be bought for 9zl and a 3zl bottle of coke only costs 8zl

the official Queen t-shirt was 100zl. not many folk seemed to be buying though. probably more to do with colour and design rather than price.

---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----

The outer skin of the stadium is not wind or rain proof, which means it may ruin your day, if you're sitting in the upper section.

i had a good wander around the stadium and it seems to me that it's a good place to watch footie.

the lower level toilets had long queues. the top level had no queues at all. important for the ladies... go up a level and save time.

Wroclaw,I didn't even know that Queen was headlining again. What kind of voice does Lambert have,is it as high pitched as Mercury's?

So are you saying you liked the show?
That's great the Wroclaw booked the gig! How full was the stadium?
How many such events do they figure the venue needs to stay solvent?

,I didn't even know that Queen was headlining again

i think they play six dates. wroclaw was the third after moscow and kiev. i think the other dates are in london.

.What kind of voice does Lambert have

sometimes very similar to freddie. the vocals are by four people. most are by lambert, taylor and may each do a few and there is section with freddie.... it's a backing track and some film and it fits in rather well.

the only problem with queen is that they carry freddie wherever they go. he has been dead more than twenty years. it's time to move on.

many other bands have replaced vocalists without fuss.

So are you saying you liked the show?

the first band were good... the second band IRA, we all know are good... the third band, mona, i couldn't get into them, but the crowd enjoyed them..... Queen took advantage of a huge stage, used very good lighting and provided a show that had obviously been thought out and practiced. best gig of the year so far.

That's great the Wroclaw booked the gig! How full was the stadium?

Wroclaw got the gig because of a cancellation elsewhere and because it was in the right place. i suspect that they wanted to play in Poland too

difficult to say how full the stadium was. the seats behind the stage were out of bounds yet the pitch was full. if not sold out, it was close.

How many such events do they figure the venue needs to stay solvent?

i have no idea what the answer to this is. however, i like the venue and will certainly go again. i think each new stadium has a problem with making money.

I was surprised when you said they showed the "Freddie film". I agree it's time to move on

i didn't notice anything new in their set. most of the old groups seem to play their greatest hits when playing live. it's what the audience expect.

the capacity for regular use (football) is around 40,000

I saw freddy, john deacon and 'queen' in 1985 and Brian may on tour in about 1993-4... can't see the point of watching them now especially with the useless selection of vocalists that they choose.

Apart from Bohemian Rhapsody and maybe one or two other tracks that were not too bad, the fact Freddie Mercury was not singing was woefully obvious. It sounded sad and eerily empty without FM. Also sans Deacon did it no favours. Unfashionable though this opinion may be, it is closer to the truth than the hype you may read elsewhere. BM are RT are great guys, don't get me wrong, but it's not Queen without FM, it's like a tribute band.

Paul Rodgers certainly wasn't a useless selection

Which is why they need to come up with new material;unless they just want to live off the success they had with Freddie.

It's lots of easy money that way

Rybnik,I agree and I figure that that's what this is about, but it can't hurt to try,if it works great if not;they can fall back to that.

When they reformed a few years ago with Paul Rogers as singer they were universally slated by the music press and a lot of die hard Queen fans. I saw them tour with Paul Rogers and I really enjoyed the gig as did most of the people there.

The problem is that Freddy was such an iconic figure that it would be impossible to replace him on a full time basis but Queen wasn't just Freddy, there were three other people in the band and they still have to earn a living. They can probably earn more money touring as Queen than they can doing other projects so I have no problem with them touring with another vocalist just as long as they don't turn into Freddy immitators, they have to be their own person.

Queen = John Deacon, Brian May, Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor. And while many commentators do not notice John's absence or treat it mariginally, for me as an amateur bass player he was as essential to the band as Freddie. If I were him I'd legally threat Brian and Roger for using the name that was a common share of four people.

+1

Nice little earner though, not surprised BM and RT couldn't resist it. Massive audience there = mega bunce.

I'm sure both BM and RT don't need the money. I saw Paul Rodgers in about 1991 and he was fantastic. I even managed to have a chat with him over a pint in the concert bar at the newcastle city hall. Queen should give up now and BM and RT should go their own ways. Queen died the day that FM passed away.

Spot on. They're just milking nostalgia. I was a big Who fan until Keith Moon died. It just wasn't the same after (how many drummers could that be said about?).
