Genealogy / Name "Mieczyslaw" / "Mietek" - Help on background! [11]

Merged: A few name questions - Mietek, Mieciu, Mieczysław

My dziadek went by the name of Mike most of the time. We also called him Mietek. Apparently that is a diminuative of Mieczysław. I guess it all makes sense.

When I was little, my babcia used to call me Mieciu (sorry if I butchered the spelling). My name is Matthew. I just learned that the Polish equivalent is Maciej. Is Mieciu a diminuative of Maciej? Or is it something else altogether?

Here's another wrinkle to the story. My great aunt would always call my dziadek "Matthew". I am confused because we all called him Mietek and I learned later that his original name was Mieczysław. Why would my great aunt call him Matthew? This was especially confusing since my father and I are both named Matthew. Luckily, we all had our own nicknames.

Language / What's a Polish equivalent of hardware store? [9]

Here in Canada (and the USA too), we have hardware stores where you can buy paint, tools, cleaning supplies, you name it.

Is there a Polish equivalent? I was trying to compose a sentence containing this term on livemocha and my meaning was very unclear to my language partners.

So, basically, is there an equivalent term in Polish that means "hardware store" as we know them in North America?

Genealogy / Long lost relatives? Błazejewicz, Wiecha. [3]

My dziadek would often send boxes of things back to Poland. I have no idea as to the contents, but it made me realize that maybe I have some relatives in Poland. I don't have much information, but maybe someone knows something. You don't know unless you ask.

Here is what I know about my dziadek:

name: Mieczysław Wiecha
born: 1925, Lublin, Poland

I'm not sure when he came to Canada. I know there was a family farm in the area of Leamington, Ontario. He eventually settled in Oshawa, Ontario. He passed away in 2005.

Here is what I found out about my great-grandfather:

name: Piotr Błazejewicz
born: 1900, Poland
He arrived in Canada in 1925 or 1926 aboard the Regina.

So, this was a pretty common practice.

I know he was doing it at least until the 1990s and maybe even early 2000s.

Life / Polish Card Games? Goła / Snap. [16]

When I was quite young, my babcia and I would often play cards. Our favourite game was called goła (which I later found out meant naked). Of course, my babcia always beat me quite handily. My problem is that I cannot remember how to play this wonderful game. I remember all the polish names for the cards, but that's it. She passed away 18 years ago. I have searched online, but no success. Has anyone heard of such a game? I'd love to teach it to my kids.

I'm from Canada (with Polish roots, obviously). I listen to a lot of Polish radio online. I've started listening to some Polish artists and I enjoy several. One in particular is Ania Rusowicz. I am listening to her 2011 album, Mój Big-Bit. I love it! I can't seem to find anything else by her. Does anyone know if she has any other works or albums?

Language / Correct way to say the date in Polish? [4]

I was wondering the correct way to say the date in Polish. I have read two seemingly conflicting sources.

Today is the 22nd of January, 2013

Is it:

a) dwudziesty drugi stycznia dwa tysiące trzynaście

or

b) dwudziestego drugiego stycznia dwa tysiące trzynaście

Which one is more correct, or is there another way?

Genealogy / Possible error of Poland's town's name [3]

I recently found a funeral card for my great grandmother. It says she was born in the town of Geraszowic. When I Google it, there are no results and Google suggests the town of Jaroszowiec instead. Does this make sense? Could this be the town of her birth?
