News / Coal-Powered Poland Refuses to "Go Green". EU Ain't Happy. [304]

Eminent Australian scientist Professor Frank Fenner, who helped to wipe out smallpox, predicts humans will probably be extinct within 100 years, because of overpopulation, environmental destruction and climate change.

Fenner, who is emeritus professor of microbiology at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, said homo sapiens will not be able to survive the population explosion and "unbridled consumption," and will become extinct, perhaps within a century, along with many other species. United Nations official figures from last year estimate the human population is 6.8 billion, and is predicted to pass seven billion next year.

Fenner told The Australian he tries not to express his pessimism because people are trying to do something, but keep putting it off. He said he believes the situation is irreversible, and it is too late because the effects we have had on Earth since industrialization (a period now known to scientists unofficially as the Anthropocene) rivals any effects of ice ages or comet impacts.

Travel / Poland or Philippines? Which is better for a vacation? (sex tourism) [39]

"Last week I said it was more likely for a Polish woman in her forties to be attacked by a bear than find a husband. Well, I've tried online dating and I was wrong. It is more likely that a single Polish woman in her thirties will be attacked by a one legged giraffe than find a husband. Ok, let's get straight into this - I went online as two people: my male persona was a 35 year old man, an architect called, 'Tom'. I gave Tom a ******** profile full of clichés ('I like long walks in the rain...') Tom was wealthy and he wanted to 'provide for his woman'. Within 6 hours, and without a photo, he had 482 Polish women visiting his profile and an inbox full of offers with some wanting to meet him straight away without getting to know him.

The female; she was an independent Polish woman who we will call 'Ania'. She worked for herself, had a postgraduate degree and supplied an attractive photo. For Ania, I used a real profile from a friend of mine. It was witty, intelligent and down to earth, with no clichés or corny mottoes. No one went near her. No one.

I won't tell you the name of the site, but it should be called, 'Welcome to the World of Desperate Women'. After 3 days Tom had thousands of visitors and hundreds of offers. The women who contacted him were highly educated and attractive with the majority of them being in their thirties."

So much to my surprise and disappointment USA rocks!, your initial hunch that Poland somehow would be a fertile ground for sex-tourism was right on the money, as long as it's an online hook-up. Read the article I posted in my previous post. One would think it was written about Moldova or Ukraine but, sadly, it's still Poland anno 2015. I have no reason to distrust the author. Paeder de Burca, a resident Irish journalist, is as hilarious as he is crushingly spot-on in his observations about Poland. Here is another excerpt that should really fit your neanderthal psyche:

"There is nothing as attractive as a real-life, chance meeting with a powerful, confident woman who has a highly developed sense of self. But on these sites, women's power is reduced. They are not women any more but products, disposable not after a year or a few months but after 10 minutes. My overwhelming feeling from using the site as Tom, was that I was shopping, the women like items on a supermarket shelf begging for my attention."

Off-Topic / Result of Danish Elections may be favorable to Poland [45]

On their own, no not at all. They will be supporting the government obviously as it is a part of the blue block but they will be for sure cooperating with Social Democrats, the largest party in DK, on a number of issues as they self ran on a very strong welfare state agenda (apart from being anti-emigrant), much like the red block.

Off-Topic / Result of Danish Elections may be favorable to Poland [45]

Interesting to realize that now with 3 UE countries already governed by conservatives (Poland, UK and Denmark), one of the main geopolitical forecasts is turning into reality:

as a Dane currently living in DK... anyways what's the point explaining anything.... just so you know DF is not even in government, Lars Løkke has just presented pure Venstre minority government, slim, only 17 ministers and very technocratic in its approach... yaaawn.. move over folks.. nothing's going on

Life / Polish people and TV Series - so good and hilariously spot on :) [97]

Out of the current crop of TV Serial headliners, Mad Men has made the least impact in Poland. Few follow it and I think I know why. The smoking, the vertigo-inducing ties, the tacky décor, the smoking, the incessant boozing during office hours, the pre-feminism sexism, but most of all the smoking - this is Poland 2015. Mad Men isn't that enjoyable for you because you aren't as far removed from it as, let's say, Game of Thrones, which is Poland circa 1921.

News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

Exactly, he was a loyal subject of the Polish king, and he was of Germanic stock. Nations didn't exist back then, first in the 18th century the idea of a nation crystallizes.

And just to remind all the chicken-brained, froth at the mouth, nationalists and so-called patriots on this forum; nationalism is --- taking pride in sh!t you haven't done and hating people you've never met.

good morning

Life / Do the Poles have a positive attitude towards the Danes and Denmark? [16]

Are you sure? According to the Danish Muslim Party, Denmark will be the first muslim nation in Europe. Let's hope they are wrong.

it's a hoax story, that party doesn't even exist... and yes Danes are much tougher on the Muslim immigration than Swedes (well at least the debate in Denmark candid)

Language / jest - są / female/male nouns - Polish Grammar help please [10]

There are 2 houses.... - "Sa dwa domy....."

There aren't 2 houses.... - "Nie ma dwoch domow....."

wouldn't worry so much about it, there aren't/isn't in Polish, translated word for word, means 'doesn't have' as in it doesn't have 2 houses and since 'have' obviously governs possessive casus, you end up with 'domow'. Incidentally there isn't/aren't as it doesn't have isn't so weird, this form exist in other languages as well, for example in Thai (mai mee) which is why you hear many asians say 'no have' when they try to indicate something isn't there

History / Lithuanians hate Poles? [156]

How old are you... 12? Nobody in Poland gives a fook about Wilno... as for stealing it, it was Soviet Union. Yawn, go on spending your days stoking your hatred to Poles, bananas or traffic lights... or whatever it is you feel like hating on. Just please be nice and limit your toxic presence in other people's lives... by going back to the 19th century, where your world view and mentality clearly belong.

Food / Are hallucinating mushrooms legal to consume in Poland? [5]

The psychedelic drug psilocybin (the active ingredient in "magic mushrooms") may produce lasting, positive changes in personality, new research finds. People who took the drug showed increases in the key personality dimension of openness - being amenable to new ideas, experiences and perspectives - more than a year later.

"It was sort of like an anti-inflammatory for the ego"

The earlier study had found positive psychological changes - documented by both participants and their family members and other associates - in calmness, happiness and kindness. The new research found that the drug takers also saw long-term changes to their underlying personality.

History / Communism, was it the best form of government Poland ever had? [68]

BTW, there were 3 million members, not 3%.

sorry my bad, indeed it was about 8% which is still significantly lower than in any other soviet-bloc country where the communist party membership was around 90%

Who's talking about being a member? Normal people just got on with life, got access to housing, free education, hospitals.

Oh yeah a true paradise on earth, Scandinavian countries should take note... yes I guess everyone was so fed up with this much affluence and social justice, they were resisting communists out of sheer boredom.

History / Communism, was it the best form of government Poland ever had? [68]

You'll be waiting a long time. Plenty of people in PL supported the party, and plenty still do.

At its highest the ruling communist party in Poland counted only 3% of the population, even though it was clearly advantageous carrier-and-otherwise to be a member. For comparison neighboring Czechoslovakia had roughly 90% of its population officially belonging to the communist party, not mention Russia and other Soviet-occupied countries. That's how strong and wide was the resentment to the Soviet-installed communist government in Poland. It came with the Russian tanks and it was treated as such.
