Love / Why don't Polish women treat education seriously for themselves? [130]

A fun fact: Most CEOs in America have an education in engineering or some other technical field.

When FIAT took over Chrysler it was said that Chrysler would get Italian small car technology, but Fiat's contribution wasn't small car technology it was Italian management. American management, outsourcing jobs to China and than wondering why the population doesn't have the money to buy anything. Brilliant!

Love / Why don't Polish women treat education seriously for themselves? [130]

No - because they don't have money to pay for studies in USA (or in fact overseas, because costs of living are higher than in Poland in general). They have to EARN the money FIRST.

Just for the record, but higher education is affordable in the US. Loans, grants, scholarship monies are available. Also there are work study programs. I paid my way through college by working part time. And I've never met a Polish American woman who didn't have a college degree. Education is valued in the Polish American community.

History / Poland's undying debt to Polonia [76]

Again - why should Poland feel thankful for this? America (of which the US Polonia are a part) betrayed Poland in WW2 - all the cash in the world can't make up for the fact that this betrayal happened.

Poland chose communism after WWII, they weren't betrayed by anyone. The US offered Poland the Marshall Plan but Poland rejected it. After WWII communism wasn't discredited like it is now. Many people thought it was the future of the world.

Yes, notice it and realize that it is the bitterness of some British expatriates in Poland that accounts for their hostility towards Polonians and not any legitimate gripe.
Polonians helped Poland struggle for her independance from the times of partition onwards. Britain shamefully recognized the partitions as legitimate. It is no wonder that some British posters here would want to shut down threads about Polonians. They are ashamed.

Britain didn't betray Poland either. When Germany invaded Poland in 1939 the British declared war in spite of the fact that they weren't prepared for war and the population did not support a war with Germany. The English and French were so ill prepared that the Germans overran the English and French Armies in as little as three weeks and pushed them into the English Channel at Dunkirk.

Very correct. Only 1% of the total population of 11 million Polish-Americans voted for the PiS party.

The only people who vote in Poland's elections are recent emigres from Poland. No one else. (Except Polonius).

History / Poland's undying debt to Polonia [76]

Communism was imposed on Poland. Stalin forbid his satellite states to accept Marshall aid.

Thats bullshit.

Surly you jest! Nobody can be that stupid, right? At least I hope so!

Here's my answer which I posted in another thread

Poland couldn't say no to Stalin and accept the Marshall Plan because there were a significant number of Poles who were communists. Poland wasn't of one mind. That's why a lot of Poles who fought in WWII couldn't return to Poland, they would have been killed...by Polish Communists. Like her: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danuta_Siedzik%C3%B3wna

UK, Ireland / Learning English but after reading comments in DM I feel it's no use [59]

I agree with PGTX. Being Polish you might want to visit the States instead of England. The exchange rate may be a bit better and you won't catch any heat about being Polish. Only I would fly Warsaw to Chicago as there are many ExPat Poles there and you won't go a long time until you hear Polish spoken in the Street.

Apparently, you've forgotten to what extent the British (not only the English) are indebted to the Poles.

Surely you jest. People will work if you pay them enough. I've known a few expat English in the States and they don't sit on welfare, they're just as hard working as the natives.

Is there no end to the bile?

The American Right Wing...very often practicing and devout Roman Catholics. Irrational and unchristian.

Currently there are 25 Catholics in the United States Senate, 16 Democrats, 9 Republicans, and 134 (out of 435) Catholics in the United States House of Representatives, including the current House Speaker John Boehner. Joseph Biden is a Catholic, the first ever elected Vice President.

Congress has never been more dysfunctional because the Catholic Church is trying to get the Republicans to legislate morality.

He may just have top settle for a scrap of paper from the registrar, but to many in Poland that is not a 'real marriage'

With few local exceptions, until 1545, Christian marriages in Europe were by mutual consent, declaration of intention to marry and upon the subsequent physical union of the parties

The Church didn't require a priest at marriage until 1563, so for approximately 1200 years all people had to do was move in together which is what they did.

A Catholic is duty-bound to evangelise

You're the barking dog of antiquity:

There are four reasons why the Cynics are so named. First because of the indifference of their way of life, for they make a cult of indifference and, like dogs, eat and make love in public, go barefoot, and sleep in tubs and at crossroads. The second reason is that the dog is a shameless animal, and they make a cult of shamelessness, not as being beneath modesty, but as superior to it. The third reason is that the dog is a good guard, and they guard the tenets of their philosophy.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cynicism_%28philosophy%29

what are mortal sins? meh not gonna list it. Read St Thomas Aquinas..he spells it out nice and plain and listed. Or go to a Diocese website

Thomas Aquinas popularized the idea that if anyone disagreed with the Church teachings (no freedom of thought) they would be guilty of heresy and it wasn't good enough to excommunicate the offender, they had to be killed. But before being killed they had to be tortured (like the ancient Greek Cynics The Church believes that you find God through pain) so that they would find God and enter the gates of heaven. That's why in the Middle Ages heretics were burnt at the stake and why the Reformation was so bloody. Scripture doesn't mention mortal sin. That's something the Church cooked up.

You want to bash Republicans and Catholics so bad you are making them into a chimera. You must be very extreme Left to be so focused and obsessed on unsubstatiated theory. you may truthfully and correctly say radical Right supporters. But the rest is whiney biased hogwash. And kinda offensive.

washingtonpost/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/11/AR2008041103327.html

The Roman Catholic Church "Contemplative Life" comes from the Greek cynics. The whole concept that the material world doesn't matter. When you mix politics with that philosophy it becomes lethal as evidenced by the Roman Catholic Inquisition. This is where the Roman Church diverges from Christianity which is based on charity not Greek Cynicism.

Which commandment is it that says "thou shall not have any false gods before me"? Like putting the rituals of the Roman Catholic Church before the word of God.

it's not the philosophers that we're talking about here, it's the Catholic Church. The religious clerics taking perpetual vows of poverty, celibacy, etc. proves my point, it's a Cynics life that they pursue and a barking dog that they become. Roman Catholicism is based on the concept that you follow the rules and rituals of the Catholic Church and you will find salvation after death (death is their salvation). Christianity is about the here and now. Be charitable to yourself, be charitable to your neighbor and show your love for God by doing the right thing.

Your counter arguments are all rhetorical, you've learned nothing from your study of the classics. You should spend some time reading the Christian Bible (New Testament), the Gospel of Matthew is particularly applicable to today's world. God speaks to all of us, not just the Pope you silly girl.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2971]

What this is really about is the Roman Catholic Church legislating morality. If you think abortion is immoral, don't get an abortion. If you don't think abortion is immoral than women should have access to proper medical care. What will happen of course is that when abortion is made illegal abortions still continue... in basements, attics and back alleys. Strange morality at play here.

Your contradicting yourself. In case you don't understand your own posts, Daniel Burke is saying that the only valid interpretation of Scripture is the Pope's. If you have a classical education as you claim, you should be able to discern that. This is what a classical education is about, the ability to think not just mimic what you've read.

Matt 9:13: "...I desire mercy and not sacrifice..." But living a Christian life is not about Bible Quotes. It is not about wrong doing. It is about being charitable to your neighbor. My problem with the Catholic Church is that they are uncharitable, thus unchristian.

As for you... you can start living a Christian life by tipping the waitress the next time you're at the bar.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2971]

Murder is an illegal killing. Abortion is not murder in the United States because the Supreme Court ruled that abortion is legal. Now whether abortion is moral is another matter but that is up to the individual. Morals are how individuals conduct their lives, civil law is the rules for society as a whole. You cannot legislate morality as for the most part it's unenforceable. The moral of the story is, if you think abortion is morally wrong don't get an abortion. If everyone thought that way there wouldn't be any abortions. For those women who think abortion is moral or believe they need an abortion, it's none of your business... if it's a sin it's their sin.

Life / Polands new immigrants from the West. [31]

The EU must not become another US.

It can't, it won't. Europe's strength is it's diversity. But for some reason the Elites want Europe to become another United States. They don't understand that the US is one culture coast to coast, with one financial system. Since 1900 Europe has been hellbent on destroying itself. They couldn't do it through warfare maybe they'll succeed with finance. Poland should bail on the whole mess and become truly independent like Norway, Switzerland and Russia. Just now I am reading in the Polish press that Moody's have downgraded the Polish Banks, unemployment is rising and everybody's working for pennies. Not a good scenario. If Poland isn't careful they can become another Greece.

Love / How can I make my Polish guy comfortable while in States? [12]

But he is stubborn

All Poles are stubborn

He is eldest and only son and his family leans on him. And they are important to him.

Polish parents are very controlling and would like nothing better than for children to live forever with the parents. They're very good at "guilt tripping". I'm sure your boy knows this and why he hasn't returned (to family).

Biggest personal difference? I was a jock(ette) and he never was. He is pessimist squared 3 and I am optimist.

Culture clash. Americans are athletic, "on the surface" (what you see is what you get) and optimistic, Poles are introspective and melancholic. This won't change unless he really wants to (he may want to) afterall many Poles emigrate not because of money, but just to get away from overbearing parents and family. Maybe he'll cut the umbilical cord.

not true, most of them emigrate to enhance their financial situation (according to every single Pole I've talked to and I've met many Poles)

That's what they tell you (and themselves)

like anywhere else, some of us are very athletic and some are not

Generally speaking, of course.

USA, Canada / Getting a VISA to USA by a Polish person nowadays [339]

There is a DEFINITE prejudicial system in getting Visas for former East block.. I just don't know why

The Euro zone wants cheap labor for themselves. So they tell the US no visa's for East Block.

History / "Westerner's" most ridiculous beliefs about the time of communism in Poland [73]

But frankly, we were more interested in Italian, French, Swedish movies, etc. then. And Magdalena was right - the DKFs (Film Discussion Clubs) were fantastic. You may want to see for example the article (in Polish) about DKF Żak in Gdańsk, one of the first DKF in Poland

I spend a bit of time watching foreign films myself, through Netflix. I watch foreign films not because they are necessarily better than American, just a different point of view. It seems like every country has a different point of view and that's what I enjoy. I've found that Poland has a very sophisticated film industry but their films are very often cerebral and introspective. Sometimes too ponderous. Poles don't like conversation, at least the characters in their films don't.

The culture of Prostitution isn't that simple, much of it involves human trafficking. There's a very good movie on the subject which I got through Netflix.

yes im aware of that ... i said if a woman is willing there should be nothing illegal about it.
if she is not willing well it's rape then isnt it and that is already illegal. So because rape is illegal and the whole culture of sex involves people being forced to have it agaisnt their will should sex be illegal... thats pretty rediculous isnt it. As long as she or he is willing to trade sex for money ... why should it be illegal

I don't think you are aware of it. Have you watched the movies? Prostitution, more often than not, is about the strong taking advantage of the weak. That's why we have laws. Get involved in the world of prostitution and you may not be able to get out of it. Many of these women become trapped. The world isn't as simple as you think, it isn't black and white.

USA, Canada / Emigrate from the USA - the sequence of events [207]

We are part of the dying blue collar middle class.

Interesting comments about medical costs in the US. Yes, medical care in the US is expensive but all medical care isn't created equal. Doctors in Poland make the same money as janitors. Below is a guy (from another thread) who planned on visiting his inlaws in Poland for a year. His visit was cut short, because in that time he got a blood clot and lost his hand. In the states that would be a pretty radical procedure. Medical care (like everything else) you pay for what you get. There are no free lunches.

News / Lech Walesa is not a democrat and this statement proves it. [24]

The concept of a "democracy" is an outrageous absurdity to begin with. It's so self-evidently ridiculous, I sometimes have trouble understanding how people see merit in this. Then I remember that they just don't. They're brainwashed/conditioned to regard it highly.

Of course there are many different versions of democracy. What kind Poland has I don't know. From the posts on this forum it appears to be dominated by a ruling elite. But what is essential to democracy is consensus. Something you don't get with other forms of government.

Nevermind 4eigner, just pay your insurance if that is ok with you :)

PGTX I am not a cheerleader for life in the States, but healthcare is available even if you do not have insurance. Why do you think so many people don't have health insurance? When they need healthcare they go to the Emergency rooms in the Hospitals. in the States they have to admit you regardless of your financial ability to pay. That's why your insurance is so high, because they charge people who can pay more money, to make up for those who don't. The rubber hits the road when you have a chronic illness and you need constant care. But how would be in Poland if you had a chronic illness? Like the guy with the blood clot? Go to Poland for 6 months and when you get back you're less one hand?

Interesting how this thread has gone.

I have no problem with people leaving the states to live overseas but go to Poland because you like the culture or the way of life, but if you're going for economic reasons you'll be in for a surprise. All of Europe is imploding due to austerity measures. A good article from another thread:

could be different in other places but... i work in a jail, prostitues are not forced here in canada ... but most of them are junkies and support their habit that way

It's like this, when you take money for sex "you owe him" when there's no money exchanged "you don't owe him anything" which is a lot less complicated.
