Study / Considerations for US Family Moving to Poland (esp. Int'l Schools) [36]

One thing that puzzles me is that the opinions come from people who seem to be doing just fine in Poland, and some of them indicate no intention to move elsewhere any time soon. Is the ESL market so competitive that the are afraid f a little more competition?

Delphi brought up some good points. Poland is a terribly unstable place for a family to come to teach ESl.

I recently quit teaching english due to boredom and the fact that i found a better paying job with better hours (unrelated to teaching). There's still a market for natives to teach ESL, however you will have to do a combo of working for a school and doing private lessons to live a more comfortable lifestyle. You'll have to work odd hours which will no doubt conflict with you family life - i only have a girlfriend, no kids, so it wasn't too much of a problem.

Your husband will have to work for you guys to make things work. I have some Polish colleagues who have kids and pay anywhere from 1K - 1.5K PLN for a nanny to watch their kids - but you're a foreigner so don't be surprised if you have to pay more - and you'll probably want an english speaking nanny. If you're only making 2-3K PLN / month when you start off, rent varies but lets say you get lucky (bachelor pad) - 1K PLN / month, well ... hmmm i think you can do the math.

But I must caution you OP, Delphi is also afraid of competition and is staunchly anti-american. People do find success in the ESL market here. It would really help if you or your husband could speak Polish.

International schooling is bloody expensive btw.

Work / Black English Teacher going to Wroclaw [247]

only an immature, arrogant, childish men with a tiny d!ick would be proud of that... good go boys.... :/

haha!

I don't say things like that in real life, only on the internet. Most men don't talk like that either - but we do think that way!

Work / Black English Teacher going to Wroclaw [247]

something you never had and something you will never get. ouch! :)

Every foreigner gets laid in Poland - it's very easy here actually. Foreign men are as appealing as water is in the Sahara desert.

The most difficult part is keeping it a short term relationship.

Law / Polish business haven't got a clue: Discuss. [72]

What opportunity? you've been here over two years and still teaching English, you had a crack at the company thing and it didnt work out, right?

Bullseye! This is the root cause of delphi's grumpiness: failed businessman, stuck teaching english in a foreign land.

And that`s not counting your other internet activity.

Love / Polish women world's second most flirtatious [75]

I am, actually. Infact, I've never read so much bullshit in my entire life.

You don't even live in Poland, dutchie. You spend most of your free time online like aphrodisiac - maybe the 2 of you can date ... online;)

They don't even smile!

The men don`t smile. Same with older women.

But younger women, say from 18-35ish, do smile and flirt - especially when in the company of foreign men.

Love / Polish women world's second most flirtatious [75]

I'm not surprised by this:

Polish women are the second-most flirtatious in the world, according to a study by social networking site Badoo.

Polish women come second only to Spanish women in a ranking of those most likely to initiate contact with a man, suggests a study of 90 million romantic contacts made over the course of a month on Badoo.

History / POLISH IDENTITY-shift from communism to democracy [28]

Yes, unlike Plastic Poles, we actually live here.

Educate us Pole-hating-grumpy-limey on how polish identity changed from commie times to democracy.

After all, you were present in Poland during the commie era so making a comparison between now and then shouldn't be a problem for you. Same goes for your partner in crime, harry.

Life / All Saints' Day in Poland - Commemoration or Carnival? [44]

The hot dogs, as people have said, can feed a traveller weary from visiting four cemeteries in one day, and the Panska Skórka shuts up the whining kids, but the other stuff? The Pole I accompanied found it extremely distasteful for such a somber day.

Candy floss, toys etc. that you saw at one cemetery is very uncommon on all saints day. I bet the people you saw selling this crap were dirt poor and just looking to make ends meet.

Besides, christmas is much more commercialized and i don't see you complaining about it...

Life / All Saints' Day in Poland - Commemoration or Carnival? [44]

I strolled around the cemeteries in my area today, and was rather shocked. I was under the impression that today was a day for thoughtful reminiscing of the past; a moment of reflection for those who came before.

It's a cultural event not a carnival you moron! It's also family event to pay respects to the dead!

Eating is disrespectful to the dead? Food stands / toi toi are a good idea for any event that attracts thousands of people. Many poles spend HOURS getting to these cemeteries, cleaning tombstones/decorating/praying/whatever, then getting back home. People get hungry during this time!!

In my many years in poland i have never seen cheap chinese toys being sold outside of cemeteries.
This holiday is not very commercialized either - there's much more that could be done in this regard - and unfortunately it will soon go down this path.

UK, Ireland / How long would it take for an English style restaurant in Poland to go bust? [80]

Try starting up a place like "Jacek i Agatka" (pay by weight) near the galeria dominikanska (wroclaw) or the hala targowa. Every time i walk by there i see a massive line up. Good "home cooked" food and reasonable prices. Not only students like this place but i`ve also seen many krauts eating there.

USA, Canada / Polack/American Polonia/Plastic Pole "culture" [568]

Sooo.. I was told to start a thread.

No, YOU wanted to start a complaining thread - your complaining about poland and americans is annoying and worse than hearing poles complain about everything.

I'm starting to think brits complain more than poles - good lord is this possible??

"Busha"

Does not mean grandmother. I've never heard anyone in polonia say that. Maybe you heard someone talk about george.

Jaja (isn't this eggs?)

Eggs or testicles (slang).

don't even understand that the Polish word for a male Pole is "Polak"

Incorrect. American used to call polish migrants "dumb polaks." Over time the dumb part was dropped due to it being offensive, but yanks continued calling poles "polaks" as the same vulgar meaning was still understood.

Then there's the way that many of them completely mispronounce their "Polish" name. The worst example? I found a video on youtube of someone called "Marchewka". Anyone living in Poland will know that it's pronounced something similar to "mar-hef-ka" - but to the Polonia? It's "Mar-Chew-Ka". Gah.

Seriously, why do real Poles put up with them?

The only thing wrong with the polonia is that they get involved in polish politics and support the kaczki. Other than that, poles like the polonia as almost everyone in poland has at least 1 family member in the usa.

The polish language among the polonia will fade overtime and these people will continue calling themselves polish-americans the same way americans of italian heritage call themselves italian americans (same goes for scots, irish, krauts etc).

It's a north american thing, an ignorant, grumpy, closed minded limey like you will never understand.

Maybe you want to start a new thread now to complain about the american pronunciation of english words...

The odd thing is why they appear to vote Kaczynski, yet idol-worship Walesa and vote Democrat. Doesn't make any sense at all!

They idol walesa because of solidarity and kaczynski because he is reminiscent of the poland they left in the past. Poland has changed considerably, the polonia hasn't really that much as they weren't around for the transition.

Worst thing is, that seems to be their attitude - that Poland is poor, and while it's fine to come and visit (and look down at) the relatives, it's not for staying in.

Nobody from the polonia looks down on poles in poland. In fact they help their family in poland. But you wouldn't know this because your not a Pole. Staying is not an option for most as they have settled in their adoptive countries, established careers, had kids etc and besides poland is a different place. Emigrating out of poland was VERY difficult for most poles, nobody wants to repeat that. Again nothing you could every understand.

Talk about desperately trying to make mountains out of molehills to bring divisions between Poles in Poland and their relatives outside of Poland.

Divide and rule. It's the british way.

Love / Indian citizen wants to marry Polish Girl and get settled there. [107]

VISA and what kinda of VIsa for coming Poland and get married

The UK wouldn't let you in so you're coming to poland? You should try the search function, there have been plenty of threads created by indians, pakis, and arabs about getting a visa, residency, marriage etc.

Master degree

Was it difficult to bribe the officials at your "university"? Just curious, how much did it cost to get the degree?

Love / Why do so many Polish girls dye their hair BLACK? [124]

I just moved to Poland recently and have been living here for 2 months and I realize that most of the Polish girls are dying their hair to black. Is this some kind of trend or are there any other reasons? Do they love black hair? What's your experience of this?

Darker Caucasian women look good in dark hair.

Most polish women IMO do not look good with black hair, especially naturally blond Polki.

I think polish women are trying to look more mediterranean in appearance because many men say they like that look. I hate to say it, but it's not working out for most of them very well.

Women in poland should just stick to their natural colors.

Blond hair + light complexion > dark hair + light complexion

This is just another example of Poles being obsessed with foreign sh!t.

So you happily jump the modern parts of history because they don't suit your view.
How convenient for you.

He was specifically talking about a past event which had nothing to do with more recent history. Just stay on topic.

News / Polish Lithuanian Diplomatic War? At last. [533]

Poles have lived in what is now lithuania for quite some time therefore they deserve some protection - just like germans living in western poland or sorbs in eastern germany.

No they didn't, they were independent before the commonwealth.

He didn't say they weren't independent prior to the commonwealth.

This again? Lithuania was eaten up by Russia, it was in the U.S.S.R, remember?

He's referring to the time long before the creation of the ussr.

Study / Admitted To Warsaw University Of Technology (Politechnika Warszawska) [69]

Not everyone can study in Britain, Ireland, USA etc. All schools have limits and standards that must be met before entrance into the institution.

These pakis coming to poland were probably not accepted to these better known english unis so they chose Poland - i'm sure plenty of others chose czech rep, hungary, germany, austria etc...

They go where they are accepted. Anywhere in Europe is better than pakistan or nigeria. And poland is in the EU so i'm sure they will try to make their way over to western europe eventually.
