Law / Opening a Polish Bank Account by a foreigner in Poland. Recommendations. [299]

I opened 2 accounts with Bank Zachodni WBK, one a £ sterling account the other a PLN account. It was very simple to do at the branch with a passport.

The idea of the 2 is that i can transfer easily from my UK account to the £ account for free whenever I want, then I can transfer to my PLN account whenever the exchange rate suits me (again for free).

The account has a Visa debit card and has been ideal for all my needs so far.

Work / Warning - InterCollege - Teachers beware [6]

I'm posting this as a warning to either current teachers at InterCollege in Kielce, Olkusz and Wroclaw, or to prospective teachers. This may only apply to native speakers, but I don't think so.

This language school should be avoided, I only worked for them for a few months, my first 2 bills took 6 months to be paid. My final bill, submitted in April 2009 has still not been paid.

The director of InterCollege, Mr Robert Jagiełło promised me payment in September 2009 - He didn't pay. After many emails from me he finally emailed me firstly on 17th February 2010 and promised a bank transfer would be made the following day - It was not. Then after many more emails from me, and attempted telephone calls (attempted because he would not speak to me), he finally emailed me on 4th March 2010 and said a transfer had been made on the previous day - IT WAS NOT.

As I said this is posted as a warning to others, but if anyone has any suggestions as to a course of action I could follow, it would be greatly appreciated.

Work / What are my chances in finding work at a callan school in Wroclaw? [22]

To teach Callan you do not need qualifications, or be able to teach, or be a native speaker.

Callan is a wasted opportunity of a native speaker.

An actor or very outgoing person is ideal for Callan no matter what their native language is.

Work / What are my chances in finding work at a callan school in Wroclaw? [22]

The Callan method makes it inevitable that the teacher will end up speaking in their natural accent. It's impossible to force a clear accent in the speed that they insist you speak.

My accent is originally Scouse, with 20 years of Yorkshire thrown in for good measure, pity the poor Polish kids that have to decipher what I'm saying at 240 words per minute.

Miracle of Miracles, he's paid me.

And there I was expecting to be able to celebrate 1st anniversary of my unpaid bill next month.

Law / Buying 2nd hand cars - UK or Poland [7]

Is there anyone on the site 'in the know' about purchase prices of 2nd hand cars in UK compared to Poland?

Should I buy a LHD car in UK and bring it to Poland, taking into account insurance, ferry, tolls, fuel and eventual registration in Poland. Would it be cheaper just to buy one here?

Thanks DNZ certainly some good looking deals on there, even with the shipping.

Have you done it yourself?

Are there any hidden costs?

News / Crash of Tu-154 at Smolensk-North--could it have been a bomb in the Polish plane? [233]

"I had been here 15 minutes when I saw the plane flying low, and I saw something serious was going on. It was cutting, cutting trees. Then over there, there was a big noise. Boom! Like a bomb."

Doh!!!

The wings hit the trees, The wings store the fuel, what a surprise there was an explosion.

Bomb my arse.

Law / May 14th -- Big Day on the markets [21]

Greece dragged the zloty down, and the £ grew stronger. The high was 5.0018zl to the £ on Fri 7th, when the early results were coming in from the UK election, then as the results started to turn to indicate a hung parliament the £ lost value, and continued to lose whilst the parties negotiated a government losing over 10% from the high, the pound strengthened slightly as the coalition government was announced but this coincided with a bail out for the Greeks so not much effect. Now the effect is coming through and we may get back up to 4.8zl to the £ or even higher, at least for a little while.

History / Question about Warsaw Ghetto (shared building?) and Monument [29]

From another forum, can anyone help?

I hope someone knows the answer to this. Was there a building shared between the Warsaw ghetto and the non-ghetto side? I researched this and one source said there was 1 building. Anyone know which one it is? And have a picture of it?

Real Estate / Making an offer for Polish houses [30]

I know there could be a wide range of answers to this but here goes..

What would you consider to be the amount wanted compared to the amount asked for houses in Poland?

For example would an offer of 75% of the asking price be reasonable or an insult?

Real Estate / Making an offer for Polish houses [30]

If this were true, why, at the first property auction in Warsaw last year, out of 27 lots, only 7 were sold. The rest failed to reach the reserve price and there were 300 potential buyers bidding.

Haven't you just disproven your own point. This is an example of the buyer setting the market value, The seller set it too high so he didn't sell, when he reduces the reserve maybe he will.

No, the point being that if the buyer dictated the price, they would have sold everything.

Not if the seller sets a reserve

Avalon I understand it all, it's a shame the same cannot be said of you. I agree with the post you've just highlighted, it's you that disagreed, but then proceeded to disprove your own arguement.

PLK

I'll try to explain in words of few syllables so you can understand.

If a seller sets a reserve at auction and it doesn't sell then that is probably not the market value, because if it were it would have sold.

Did you ask them to put it on?

Maurice, Dave or Asha will always put on what you want, unless the pub is packed with people watching something special.

They always put the rugby on when I ask.

History / What are the key features of the Polish Eagle? [56]

I tried checking this and this is what wiki says: This emblem was conceived during the Bolshevik Revolution. Do you something different?

Why let the truth get in the way of a good legend about the White Eagle of Poland.
