News / Polish PM Tusk- dictator or not? What Poles think? [455]

Why the heck some of them assume they have a right to say anything about Poland is beyond me!

As opposed to "backward so called Poles" in the UK? If you live in the UK why do you then say anything about Poland, or Serbia for that matter? After all, those are your own rules of engagement?

I don't think Tusk is a dictator BUT if he's upsetting Crow, a delusional Serbian racist and a fanatic who blames all Serbian atrocities on NATO and EU propaganda then Tusk is a good guy to me. I know both sides committed crimes but the Serbian side was the main culprit of rapes, torture and murder in this war. Until people accept their past they'll never have a future.

PS. I disagree with the Kosovo solution which I think will only cause more problems in the future but that's a totally different subject.

Timed out on my edit.

The Serbian people have many episodes in their history that they're very proud of, and rightfully so. Yugoslavia breakup period isn't one of them.

Love / My husband is Polish and I was wondering why he drinks all the time. [66]

Salsa - not sure if your post is a hoax or a real question. If it's real then blaming his drinking on being Polish is silly and won't solve the problem. You might have married an alcoholic and the only way to fix it is for him to recognize it and for him to want to change his ways. If you start blaming his heritage for his drinking you'll cause more problems.

Get a good counselor and make it very clear that his drinking makes you unhappy. It makes you unhappy because he's your husband, NOT because he's your "Polish" husband. There are plenty of alcoholics all over the world and the vast majority of them won't even acknowledge they have a problem. Marriage is about two people working together, it's time you work with him, NOT the members of Polish Forums. Good luck to you both.

Life / What gifts to take? Presents customs in Poland. [173]

There is Boy's Day but I don't remember the date

There's no "Boy's Day", there are however "Days of Men" and the celebrations begin every year on March 9th and go on until March 7th the following year.

PS. I like chocolate! :)

So here's to all the PF women, ladies, girls, madonnas, chicks, princesses, kobiety, dziewczęta, dziewczynki, księżniczki, koteczki, słoneczki, żabki, etc., etc. :-)))

History / Polish pirates [58]

Sorry, those are primarily Swedish pirates (Vikings lol).

"...The Pirate Bay was started by the swedish anti copyright organization Piratbyrån in the late 2003, but in October 2004 it separated became run by dedicated individuals..."

Language / Why is the Polish language so difficult? [309]

I'm sorry but what is your point? You think Polish is hard? Go downtown Shanghai and tell me what you think. ...or Osaka, or Incheon for that matter. (you'll hear Mandarin/mainland Chinese, Japanese and Korean respectively). Trust me, you'll be blown away when it comes to people "being expressive" in their own languages.

Sounds like you have rude (loud) neighbors and the fact you don't know what they're saying aggravates you even more. I don't blame you a bit.

However, you must remember that Polish is a totally different language and thus sounds much different. English is a Germanic language and therefore intonation, accentuation, etc. in other Germanic languages such as Swedish, Dutch, German, etc. will feel more similar to you than in Slavic (Polish, Czech, Bulgarian, etc.) or Romantic (Italian, French, Spanish, Romanian, etc.) languages.

Language / Why is the Polish language so difficult? [309]

Buuuhahahaha Romantic :))) You made my day at work more cheerful :)

Well, ok Romance languages but being a romantic at heart I wanted to make your day more cheerful, and as you can tell I succeeded! :) Next time I'll bring a bottle of red wine too. ;)

PS. Well, my iPhone's auto-spell feature often saves me from awful and embarrassing spelling errors. Sometimes it also awakes the romantic in me. :)

Language / Why is the Polish language so difficult? [309]

Actually polish is easier than English because how you see it, that's how it's read.

Really? If you say that you read it the way you see it "using the polish alphabet and the polish pronounciation of those letters" then I'll say, maybe, but even then, I don't think so..

Also, the grammar is more complicated.

Ja jestem -> I am
Ty jest -> You are
On jest -> He is
Ona jest -> She is
My jesteśmy -> We are
Wy jesteście -> You are
Oni jestą -> They are

Sprytny mężczyzna -> Smart man
Sprytna kobieta -> Smart woman
Sprytne dziecko -> Smart child
Sprytne dzieci -> Smart children

...and there's more. :)

Much of the richness and subtlety of English comes from its huge vocabulary. Much of the complexity and subtlety of Polish comes from its grammatical structure. Yet it is possible to speak English well with only a small fraction of the words. It is not Possible to speak Polish well without some grammatical accuracy.

A great summary of the differences between the two languages.

News / Tragedy in Russia - shouldn`t Poland declare national mourning? [41]

Sincere condolences to the people of Russia, a horrific accident for sure.

I disagree with your analogy Pawian, in the Smolensk accident there were Polish citizens who died on Russian territory. Not a similar scenario in this case. However, it's a tragedy for sure and I sincerely sympathize with the Russian people.

It doesn`t matter whose citizens died on whose terrritory. I say: common Russians are our Slavic brothers, showing sympathy would be a brotherly thing to do.

Ok, fair enough but how about our Czech, Slovak, and Croatian brothers and sisters? What about Slovenians, Bulgarians, Ukrainians, Belorussians, and other Slavic brothers and sisters? Before you know it Poland will be in morning year around.

This sounds very cold of me and that's not my intention but I think shows of sympathy are most effective and are appreciated the most when they come from regular citizens and not the respective governments. I say send a letter, an email or send a bouquet of flowers to the Russian embassy or maybe drive out there and sign the book of condolences. That'll mean more than what the Polish government does. I sent an email to the Russian Embassy in Washington, DC.

News / Tragedy in Russia - shouldn`t Poland declare national mourning? [41]

I saw pictures of this ship, are you sure it was designed for 120 people? Looked pretty small to me. Either way, I feel so sorry for those scuba divers, years ago I helped in recovering the body of a 10 year old girl who'd drowned in a lake in Sweden, I can still see her reddish skin and the scratches on her body, she and several other kids were inside a cabin of a small boat that'd capsized, the kids were trying to fight their way to the door (it was pitch black) and many had scratch marks on their bodies, she was the only one who didn't make it. It's a horrible tragedy.

Right. Agree. Nice.

Not sure how you're using the quote function but the highlighted words above were mine, NOT WildRover's. Don't want WR to get blamed for the perceived coldness of the quote when he never said those words. Just FYI.

Love / Is it true that Polish women are very busty? [71]

Is it just me who thinks this thread is totally retarded? ...and pretty demeaning toward our ladies? When starting a thread we should be able to chose the "silly, stupid and sexist" subject. That's where this one belongs.

What do you say we ask the mod to move your post and my reply to any new/old thread of your choice? Plenty of threads about Russia here. I see your point, I truly do, however many Russians read online forums nowadays and I think it's very inhumane to be throwing politics in here. It's your call but that's how I think.

Hopes fade for survivors from Russian boat tragedy.

Sorry about my creative spelling, meant to say dozens of kids (not duzzins).

You make a good point.

Well, I see your points yet I still believe there's "a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak...". True words then and true words today. Those poor souls haven't even been found yet, much less had a proper funeral. But hey, this is the modern age where everyone has an opinion and the opinion has to be shared today, preferably yesterday. Nothing personal, just venting.

Nic wiecej i nic mniej. Ale nawet tego nie chesz im dać. To jest większa szkoda.

Już więcej o tym nie chcę mówić, widzę że mówię do ściany.
