News / Crucifixes to stay in Polish schools [364]

Depends who makes the statistics:)
But the number is high. However, it's high also due to the fact that there are many people who simply wouldn't "sign off" the Church. It's the only way to make true statistics and stop being percieved as such

most Catholic country in the world

According to my knowledge around 500.000 people did this but the number is increasing and probable a lot more people that disagree with the Church should do it. If not the crosses will stay and everything else too.

Life / Giving tips in Poland [235]

Yes, I think we can make this generalisation. But still there's quite to learn for some - even in restaurants in the very centre.

Language / What are some loanwords in the Polish language? [24]

dżygi dżygi

me either - what is that? :)

funny that they're not even supposed to drink the stuff that they named.

originally it meant something different: كحول kohel was a dye (or some pigment) if I recall properly.

UK: Crucifix banned at hospital where Muslims allowed to wear headscarves

One thing I'd like to point out: There's a difference between manifesting your religion/creed with symbols (unless she was just wearing it on her chech of course) hanging on walls etc. and headscarfs that are connected with religion but rather with tradition - anyway it's a part of clothing, not a symbol (you cant wear a cross, can you). Of course we don't see Chrstians walking around wearing headscarfs and it is strange to wear it anywhere outside desert regions:)

Hah! Oh, yes, true. Good point. Different head scarfs and more colorful maybe. Or maybe they are old Muslim countryside ladies? It should be forbidden as someone banned crucifixes somewhere else! ;)

Jesus is going to be real happy to see all those crosses

- I assume that a cross reminds him of some unpleasant incident 2000 years ago.

What? You don't believe in the Sun? Hello? You see it everyday and it's there, it's proven 1000 more than existence of any of gods, and yet you don't believe in it. I must say you're quite a sceptic person :))))

Off-Topic / An English Version of Gadu-Gadu? [105]

Forget Gadu Gadu, the latest versions are preloaded with crappy add-ons and it's an adware program really. If you really need it download earlier version: 7.

However only the newer one supports new users' numbers.

Anyway I recommend using Pidgin, that's from Linux but works on Win as well. With Pidgin there's no ads, banners and all that crap that only consumes your CPU's RAM. And it supports many other communicators: AIM, Jabber, GG, and other.

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

Again like I wrote long before: Have you all read this article about the hardest language? It's rubbish and contains false data. If someone makes such judgements based on poor quality research and (I guess) no comparative linguistics skills then... what value has such a statement?

My brief thought is: Polish is hard but rather not the hardest, Hungarian, Finnish or Czech are also hard to master; complexity of language forms is an advantage to the users not a handicap, English native speakers who don't know at least 1 or 2 other languages (with preferably one non-indoeuropean and one from other language family than Germanic) are not the best in comparing language and their qualities (unless they have aptitude towards studying grammar of languages etc.)

The limits of our language mean the limits or our world

that's the famous L.Wittgenstein's thought and it is true especially when comparing languages. The more of them you know (learn at least) the more world you understand.

Magdalena: Can you explain this to me please: "Because no other Slavonic language has inflections, genders, or tenses. And no other language has them either..."

Sarcasm.

I am familiar with the concept;). more truely I am usually full of it. You might want to practise being more understandable with your sarcasm or you''ll be getting close to being misunderstood more often, Miss Magdalena the Linguist.

Off-Topic / An English Version of Gadu-Gadu? [105]

Well, the new GG is in fact taking too much RAM, check it. And then compare with another one like Pidgin, or any other free one without ads. As it may be hard to leave your fav. IM program it then pays as you can switch to a better one (IMO) that actually has only the features you need (but that's my personal opinion of course) and no photos, radio, and extraordidnary graphics and animated emoticons (that you can instal to e.g Pidgin if you only want)..

Work / CV for polish job market [17]

I'd say in Poland it is often better to put a good photo on your resume, as it may attract the eye of a recruiter. If I remember well, an employer (here: prospective future employer) can demand your DOB (interestingly not the place of birth). it is generally up to you, but the more relevant information you put, and more distinguishable your resume is - the better your chances are.

If aiming for IT or similar industry positions make sure your resume doesn't contain any obvoius and basic mistakes (check layout, spelling, reverse chronology, relevancy of information). I'd suggest a functional resume if you have sufficient achievements, of a resume based on experience (description of projects/tasks you did etc.).

cheers

Work / English qualifications to start Teaching English In Poland. Is degree of some sort needed? [123]

My students prefer American English to British English because they say it's easier to understand when spoken.

Well, yes, because it is easier and sounds more "casual". Surely it has many advantages. But the nasty AmE phonetics demand from the speaker to chew tobacco while talking to gain that Southern drawl ;)

[joking of course]

Work / CV for polish job market [17]

4 pages is long, usually I'd expect such a long resume from a 50-or-so-year-old experienced professional. Maybe you put too much detail?

News / Do Poles in Poland really feel betrayed because there won't be any US Shield? [288]

Having this system installed in Poland would give this country nothing but trouble: this would instantly cause Russia to direct a some of their missiles to Poland. Also it will not protect Polish teritory nor their neighbours so why the heck get into prospective trouble with Russia and tighten the relationships (language of diplomacy calls this actually butt-kissing) with the US instead with some European countries. For now it seems that Polish foreign politics are aspiring to make Poland the 51st state, regardless of the relationships in the rest of Europe.

I share the rather sceptic views of prof. Roman Kuźniar on that, he's an expert in this field

News / Do Poles in Poland really feel betrayed because there won't be any US Shield? [288]

Who knows [Putin does;)]? Right now I guess there are little or no missiles and there'll be a hundred if the shield stands. But I assume they will not be used - what I mean is that together with the missiles the politics will change and talks with Russia will be different i.e. worse.

Travel / Clubs, bars and general night life in Poland [13]

Krakow does not sleep, and if you want to come to Poland - Krakow should be on your must-see list. Lot's of places to go and have fun.

I actually wouldn't say that Poznań is

dead in terms of nightlife

- what about some clubs like Post Dali and many others? But it is a bit off-season during summer.

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

Why is that such a big deal to you? Happens everywhere, normal colloquial, informal language that happens in a conversation. If it makes you feel better, I usually speak Swedish with my mom (easier for me) and she says I often speak Swenglish instead

- maybe here's the problem. I mean language awareness. You surely can say sthg without using foreign words. Rigid language orthodoxy isn't usually good, but why should we follow a language trend if there are good equivalents? I bet in Swedish, as well as in Polish there are perfectly fine, native or "near-native" (even if with a different origin, absorbed dozens/hundreds years ago) words for things. Almost everything you can name in your mother tongue, so I share my views with Rychlik.

In Polish I personally detest using e.g. display instead wyświetlacz but there are hundreds of examples.

HEY, WHY DID THIS AD BELOW STUCK TO MY POST? Never happened before...

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

There is no such a thing as purity of the the language from the linguistic point of view, since languages change, evolve, borrow and so on.

not nationalistic but linguistic. It's a matter of approach in linguistics, but I do take your point too. I don't however appreciate mixing and using language without proper care for correctness.

Skysoulmate: I'm not saying "learn Polish instead" but I simply miss people who care about how they say - in this matter it's about purity, no other.

Life / Polish dentistry cost - 230 zl for one tooth cavity filling [99]

230 for one cavity

- I'd expect this to be a price of a good and [expensive] renowned dentist and/or with best equipment. OR you had a VERY large cavity...

I paid about 80 zloty for teeth fluorization for example, can't advise on filling prices though.
