Food / Do you call it kiszka or kaszanka? [55]

Yes, but bear in mind that when a guy from Poznań says kicha he means usually any sausage. It depends though...

Back to "Poland only" tipping before folks get antsy... ;)

Appreciate that;)!
Also I agree with your comment on my last post. Comparing is good. I just don't want to delve into US tipping. And definitely not transfer those habits to Poland.

If you are baptised into a Christian religion you are a Christian, you cant be a fake Christian. You don't have to believe in the religion anymore but you are still a Christian unless you renounce it.

If by renouncing you mean apostasia then ok, but by any way it is not possible to CANCEL baptism. Anyway it's not like it is a burden, but why the heck do it to completly unaware babies, that cannot make a conscious decision, why not wait till they can reason? Oh, I know! Because a dezen or two of indoctrination started from the earliest days can soften anyone and make pron to ANY bulls**t you can make up!

God but not in religion

- its connected, or you create your own lifestyle on it and that is where you can say there's as many religions as people on this black hole of existence we call Earth.

You can follow what Jesus and the other prophets were supposed to have said without following the religions.

I don't think you can. No one knows anymore who said what. Many translations, mistakes, cut out parts etc. just because they were not so convenient with "the official" doctrine. Why is Judas book not included? And as far as I recall there were some others - and no, I did not watch DaVinci Code:). I read Judas's book for example.

having no religion does not cause problems.

Bull's eye! We have examples of countries based on religion and I reckon none of you would like the benefits and level of freedom offered in Saudi Arabia or Taliban Afghanistan etc.

different religious symbol to be displayed that should be displayed too.

Why put any symbol? Do we need a parade of symbols? If you have it in your heart why you need it on every wall etc?

I guess we've exploited the subject.

Yes it's a filthy practice. I think I've read somewhere that it has to be written in the menu or stated before by the staff if they add the tip (or any additional fees) to the basic price.

Work / Average monthly salary in Poland is around 1000 PLN (few hundred bucks). [387]

Why giving net amount? It changes depending on many factors and it is easy to know how much is net from a gross number. I'd say only blue collar people use net terms only when talking about earnings, as it is easier for them.

About the teacher: she should earn more - ask her how many hours she is working. My friend in similar position earns >3000 but works hard.

The average may be confusing but it is stathistics. Sure many of our friends (or us) around don't reach the average which sounds depressing. But to understand it you must check the method of preparing this stathistics. Or treat it as irrelevant:)

Travel / What should I wear in winter in Poland? [29]

Merino wool is the best for really cold conditions. And real sweaters, not cotton, but woolen (mix with nylon, viscose or other also). Polartec fibre also good but not elegant.

Tug jobs can be found back on aisle 9.

-Fine! I'll meet you there;)
What's wrong in keeping to the point of the discussion? I didn't want to read too much about wages and regulations in the US as it has got nothing in common with Polish reality. As I said it's good to compare, but I think some guys went (you?) went on to far with digression. Off topic.

But really, thanks for insights on earnings of US servers etc. - still it has little correspondence with tipping in Poland.

i'm also familiar with tipping in Poland

It's exploring the topic further, just scroll up to read up on the relevance.

-well, if you and Convex want to talk about tips in the US then start another topic, because this one is about this phenomena in POLAND - as the thread implies ("Giving tips in Poland").

we can compare it with other countries, but it is more relevant to compare with European countries. You just focused too much on the US probably.

.....

- that's a real insight! :))

NJ clubs or, of course, NYC clubs, that would clear $1500 in cash just working Thursday/Friday/Saturday nights. Sure, during the off seasons they'd pull maybe $700-$900, but that's still above the national avg. salary

The topic was about POLAND and tipping in Poland. Enough of comparisons with American tips, as it's a different story and completly different system, please.

Really. A tip is a tip it depends on the individual because some people know everything and don't like tips.

I take it as a joke obviously. But for the sake of clarity: we all here mean tip as German Trinkgeld, Polish napiwek ,n or bakshish. Not advice, porada...

Believe me, most would prefer for the tip to remain an expression of pure benevolence, but the system here bastardized it. Some don't believe it, some are unable to comprehend. Hopefully, even with all that yapping going around, maybe somebody found out something that he/she might have honestly not known.

I liked your last inputs F stop.

A Swedish guy once said to me when we were discussing a similar topic that "The Church in Sweden has gone bankrupt... a thousand years ago". He might ahave put it well, anyway well enough that I still remember it.

I'd give a small tip for lousy service, and give a handsome tip for really good service.

Why tip for lousy service? :) I only tip if the waiter has dropped my food on his way not more than once!

collective thinking, mass-hysteria

You just wrote the foundation for a religion! Along with the above is also conformism.

Life / Do you think a smoking ban would be a good thing in Polish restaurants and Bars? [217]

we are required to provide adequate ventilation. You do know that right?

Yes, but either the restrictions are low or they are not being followed. If it was eficient then I wouldn't have a problem with going to some bars. Simply the ventillation would suck up the smoke, but now my clothes do it instead. In some places it is also not easy to have good, efficient ventillation - like almost all bars/clubs in basments around old market sqares. Or maybe the staff does not turn it on to save on electricity or maka foggy atmosphere.

Wouldn't it just be a matter of time before non smoking bars are the norm?

We don't know how long it'll take. Many people wish not to wait.
I do get your point, but I see we're poles apart.
I

Private property is not a public area, end of story.

I wrote that it is not like a typical private property - like your home etc. If you open your doors and let people in to make profit out of that, you should follow some regulations - I wrote that before and it is the same for me to have safety standards, fire escapes routes, and effective ventillation at least.

Food / Prices of decent Polish Vodka in Poland? [15]

@Harry:
Thanks! Well I suppose if you get it from the source then there's no risk. Ask him about the counterfeits on the market. I quickly browsed these sites (in Polish):

Customs Chamber in Wrocław Magazine takes a huge room in an old house . On the shelves high to the ceiling , are tons of goods. It's all here : stacks of seized pirated CDs of music and movies , clothes from markets - all "made in China" , but with tags ii prints adidas , nike , puma . Cartons of counterfeit perfumes of the most popular global brands (some of them burned stains in clothing , which spryskało them - tell the customs officers ) , boxes of counterfeit vodka , whiskey, together with new bottles and caps . For this label , as from the factory. I went to the warehouse in Mark, head of the department to combat crime Wroclaw Chamber of Customs .

You can find some information about illegal production of Bols and others.

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

If it's the same then would you say "pięć jajów" ???

Until quite recently you did not conjugate words like radio, kakao, studio, but a few years ago it evolved and now it is allowed. "Witamy w naszym studiu", "dziś w radiu", etc. So maybe pięć radii, huh? Anyway I don't see when you would say that? What does it mean? How can you count radio?

Our history is proving that abandoning religion leads to nothing good, Soviet Union or Holland being examples.

- An example for what? Is Holland a bad example? Poland could really use some of Holland's liberal attitudes (some, not all maybe, but that is another topic). And as far as fair attitude towards religion is concerned, Holland compared to Poland is eons ahead [even though the difference between them is only two letters;)]

Food / Prices of decent Polish Vodka in Poland? [15]

As to hangovers, I'd add Bols to the sh*t list.

Done that. I'd say it is rather the matter of purity and proper distillation than personal factors (them too but not so much as the quality).

Bols used to be (not sure about now) one of the most commonly counterfeited vodkas, I read one estimate that about 1/3 of Bols sold in shops is fake. And it was almost impossible to tell the difference (only the next day) - the "forgerers" used the same bottles and even holograms could be compromised.
