Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

Crow
Poland is English dominion. That`s why

I thought we're USA's 51st state! We're America's poodle and America is Israel's poodle.

NorthMancPolak:
But I'm going to keep on saying "kartofle" even if you do think it makes me common :p

Kartofle is more German and ziemniaki (earthies) is more Polish.

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

there is NO domestic equivalent, so the word stays

Agreed, Magdalena, though if in the past, Poles created new words intrinsically Polish, such as samochód (that which goes by itself - a horseless carriage), and samolot (that which flies by itself - originally aeroplen, in Polish), then why not create new words now? A Polish friend in London made me cringe when he said "jestem bardzo tired po long dayu". Oh Gawd!

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

Does anyone here think foreign words or phrases used in Polish (jestem happy, jadłem sandwicze z cateringu etc) is undermining Polish/Slavonic culture? Or any other culture come to that? Read "Language In Danger" by Andrew Dalby. He maintains that the loss of local idioms and language is a loss to that particular community, as local knowledge is lost, ie names of healing plants which grow locally. I know I'm not being as articulate here as I should be (limited time on computer), but I'm sure you get the gist.

Life / Small change in shops in Poland!? [95]

demonsqueaker
I still have to sign for card payments here at random places - even at Carrefour, using my Polish chip and pin card. One of the managers moaned that he was fed up with the system because it didn't seem to be consistent one day working, one day not. Sometimes they even stop accepting certain forms, I spent a month having to go to the other end of town as half the shops lost the Mastercard facilities with no warning.

Oh I know what! Let's all get microchipped and walk around with a barcode in our foreheads. No more moaning, lack of change, getting lost, losing your wallet or credit card...and find your kidnapped baby faster than it takes to say '666 New World Order'.

History / Poles should emulate Jews? [153]

Ho-hum. Sorry folks, I don't find this of interest. What am I doing on this subject I don't know already. Better have a (salty?) coffee at vaginacafe.pl

Life / Small change in shops in Poland!? [95]

One thing which pleasantly surprises me is that plastic is more widely accepted in Poland than it is in Germany! Even 'Cashback' is being introduced (slowly - powoli, not langsam).

Travel / Driving to Poland from England - any tips? [264]

We found taking the car on TransEuropaFerries between Ostend and Ramsgate to be a bit cheaper and pleasant. The sailing is twice as long as the Dover-Calais route, but there's less hassle, fewer passengers, and you drive a couple of hours less to London in total as you don't have to drive all the way to Calais/Boulogne. Can't stand the Tunnel!! Folkestone and Dover are the bottlenecks of Europe! That's our own personal experience: yours may be different.

Travel / Indian or Mexican food in Warsaw. [60]

Just discovered this well-named place: vaginacafe.pl
OK it isn't in Warsaw but in Bielsko-Biała, but who could resist mentioning it? If anyone goes there, tell me what the coffee tastes like (salty, insipid, moaning waitress?).

Law / Advice please - Getting monies from a Poland employer who refuses to pay [41]

I would take the matter to court as soon as possible.

I empathise! Be careful, though. If you do that, and your Polish isn't totally fluent, you'll have to legally hire a court interpreter. Guess how much that'll cost? I suggest you do something in their stupid office that, on the one hand, isn't serious enough to sue you, but annoying enough for them to send you a solicitor's letter. You can then reply to their solicitor in English, claiming your Polish isn't good enough (which is probably true), and that you demand a reply in fluent English for it to be legal. Write to their solicitors IN REPLY as many letters as possible by registered post, really dragging out each point in each letter and making it as long-winded as possible. Interpreters charge per word. It doesn't matter if the solicitor is an Oxford graduate; for his letters to be legally valid, they MUST bear the stamp of an official interpreter. That way those b*s*rds will have to pay through the nose. Oh and include some really long texts from "your Sri Lankan advisor", a long, long text in some obscure alphabet such as Sinhala. Additional, higher interpreter costs! Don't hire your own dollar-eyed solicitor, as you can't afford it. You haven't been paid. Good luck with those Catholics.

UK, Ireland / Missing Polish woman found murdered in Chesterton, UK [27]

British police are not unknown to take the lazy, easy option, not allowing anything silly like common sense and evidence to get in the way. Just look at the way they handled the Colin Stagg case. They eventually had to "apologise unreservedly" on TV.

Don't be gay in Israel, you may be stoned to death for that (slight exageration, but not by much).

Our Lady of Perpetual Help

You can ask her, though I wouldn't as she let Poland down every time.

News / Decoded talks inside Poland's president's plane are released in Internet [337]

Thick fog? Convenient (this isn't 1930). A lack of communication between pilot and ground control in bad Russian? LOL! Even if you're a purple-skinned neanderthal pilot from the people's republic of watsituya, all pilots and ground control staff worldwide communicate in fluent English, with a minimum IQ of around 130. So the poor communication story is the purest bolloc*s ever. Thick fog my *rse! The fact that Lech Kaczyński was anti-corruption and anti-mafia was totally irrelevant, we are asked to believe.

Life / If I could introduce something from my country into Poland, I would.... [175]

Shops still open on some stupid RC holiday like the so-called "Body of Christ Day", next on June 3rd. All of Poland is closed on that day. Even the dogs will be afraid to bark for fear of excommunication.

If Poland is to compete successfully with the West, it MUST rid itself of Catholic control.

News / US to deploy Patriot missiles to Poland [404]

Russia, and a perceived threat from Germany.

Let's not forget China. They're taking over economically, importing everything including GARLIC into the EU for Chrissake. They now own the national debts of a number of countries, especially African. Now that the peril jaune has discovered the power of the purse, we'd better learn Cantonese!

Genealogy / What are common Polish character traits? [417]

Heartily concur with most of the above. My dad had his UK passport "lost" which had 800 GBP in it, whilst in the safe hands of his PL sister, my flesh & blood aunt. We couldn't prove anything though. One visit to the confessional on the following Saturday and the matter is closed! F*g RC *****!!

News / Crucifixes to stay in Polish schools [364]

Even young Poles today openly cross themselves in public. Somewhat behind the times to put it politely. How big a peasant do they want to be? In UK where the church is much less prominent, they'd be "weirdos" or "Jesus nuts".

Off-Topic / To ALL IMMIGRANTS ("expats") to Poland on this forum... [124]

Have you thought this through, grubas (fatso)? If all foreigners leave Poland, who will you Polaks have, to steal from? Each other? Not likely, as you all know what other Polaks are like and are very aware of each other's tricks. That means you'll all be holy as hell and have no need to go to 'holy' confession. It'll be the thin end of the wedge of not going to church. What will that 2000 year old firm do? Accuse you of being "sekta"?

Food / A recipe for hootch? Bimber taste in Poland. [42]

Famously, there's "bimber" proportions known as 'Bitwa Grunwaldska', after the Battle of Grunwald in 1410. It's 1L of water, 400gr of sugar and 10gr of yeast, totalling the year of 1410.

Travel / Nice restaurants in Warsaw [30]

On this occasion, I'd say Harry's right. The Old Town is a tourist trap. And some years ago, the establishment owners in the Old Square wouldn't open shop because the mafia demanded protection money from them. The cops were in on it too and refused to arrest the mafia, who were known to the cops anyway.
