UK, Ireland / Is it good for Poland as Sinn Fein will win today in Northen Ireland [269]

The EU will not give up

As far as the EU is concerned Brexit is done, the withdrawal deal and free trade agreement was negotiated, ratified by the British parliament and the EU. it may be altered but not scrapped otherwise there is a very real possibility there would be a trade war. That could impact Poland for the very short period before the UK folds.

With success in the north comes success in the 26 counties. The same party in government in both parts of the island is very worrying for the corrupt right wing duopoly that have basically run the place (26 counties) since independence. Ireland is a small country so the impact a Sinn Fein government will have on the EU will be minimal except when it comes to reunifying the country. Sinn Fein will do everything to encourage the EU to support their position.

In the big scheme of things Sinn Fein and Ireland wont have an impact on Poland

News / Should Poland pay for gas in rubles? [155]

This is true, demonstrating again that this bunch of right wing nut jobs are all fur coat and no knickers.

They take from the EU and contribute nothing...see their refusal to take refugees from places their army was occupying. Now they demand the EU pay them to care for "the right kind of refugees" hypocrites.

Travel / Travel to Poland from the UK? (COVID time) [50]

Yes my friend works for Sanepid and hates it especially after they were all transferred to Covid tracing. They are understaffed and several people in her office have contracted covid. Edit: not as a direct consequence of her work.

They definitely have access to databases of positive cases including private information about their work and travel etc.

Travel / Travel to Poland from the UK? (COVID time) [50]

Is it possible they have access to lists of passengers of all airlines?

They have access to a lot of government databases not sure about flight records will find out and post.

Edit
Depends on where the subject lives and how many staff are sick/isolating

Travel / Travel to Poland from the UK? (COVID time) [50]

Travel from Britain to The Irish Republic is currently severely restricted due to the new variant, the only sure way to get to Dublin Airport is to travel from Britain to Belfast ( by plane) then cross the border on your way to Dublin Airport. Direct travel to Dublin Airport shouldn't be a problem however it's unethical and you probably will be turned back at the Polish airport (especially if you don't have an EU passport) at your own expense.

Just don't do it...

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [579]

You need to spray spuds to prevent blight the disease is airborne and will thrive in the right weather conditions. Warnings will be issued by various organisations in Poland, you can sign up for email alerts. The correct weather conditions for blight are a warm and humid atmosphere. The best organic compounds preventing blight are copper based, dithane is used commercially. I use Bordeaux mix which is a copper based powder you mix with water and spray directly onto the plant leaves. It's major disadvantage is that it's washed off by rain and a second spray is required. Some years you don't have to spray.

Rotating crops is to prevent soil based problems for example growing spuds in the same place year after year encourages pests like eel worm to flourish. Brassicas like cabbage, sprouts, cauliflower etc should be planted in the potato patch the following year not the other way round. Earthing up spuds encourages more tubers as they come from the side shoots of the roots and protect the plant from late frosts. Spuds are easy, when earthing up which you do about two or three times a season you can kill the weeds by cutting their roots and turning them into the soil where they will die.

Tomatoes are the same plant family and also suffer from blight, you treat them for blight the same way you do spuds. I don't think Blight is as big a problem in Poland as it is in Ireland. Get your spuds into the ground as soon as you can in case you can't visit due to the election queues and let nature take its course.

History / Climate, weather event and Polish history [23]

If its on topic then yes however as fracking is not an historical event it would be difficult.

You could start a thread about climate change if you wish.

Life / Marketing Speak or mumbo jumbo talk from Poland? [22]

Marketing speak or Mumbo jumbo is the kind of language that has become increasingly popular among those facinated by pseudo intellectual pursuits, it can be identified by the use of both hackneyed and meaningless phrases.

I wondered if this ridiculous phenomon had taken root in Poland.

Life / "BIESIADA BEZ GRANIC" - can someone tell me what this is all about? Poland's songs video. [6]

Several DVD's of this show are available to buy online, one review (possible written by someone involved with the production) states....

The excellent idea of Zbigniew Gorneg was realized on Polish television with the release of Gala Songs. 110 minutes of singing, fun and games by popular Polish actors and singers. Starring Piotr Gasowski, Katarzyna Jamroz, Wojciech Kaleta, Boguslaw Mec, Robert Rozmus, Maryla Rodowicz z Zespolem, Hanna Sleszynska, Ryszard Rynkowski, Krzysztof Tyniec, Zespol Afabre.

It appears to be a Polish TV special from the 1990s

Feedback / Please do not quote excessively [118]

There's no quote function in Chrome

I made an error earlier, I wasn't logged in to the site on Chrome. The quote function is working for me on Chrome (PC).

Mobile devices tend to be app driven, they are not good for general browsing.

Feedback / Please do not quote excessively [118]

quoting when you're browsing with safari works fine on a MacBook but on an iPad (2) or iPhone (4) it doesn't work.

You are correct about the ipad2, I have just checked several models and ipad 3 and 4 allow you to quote.

Feedback / Please do not quote excessively [118]

As you can see, I just quoted Harry's post and it doesn't appear as a quote.

It appears correct for me.

I have checked on several browsers, the quote function appears to be working on IE but not on Chrome (PC) Safari (ipad and OSX) is grand.

Can you see the quoted text?

History / Poles should emulate Jews? [153]

I don't think we are all cookie cutters Barney

I'm not sure what that means, my point is that creating some arbitrary yard stick to measure people or nations is nonsense.

History / The Riga Peace Treaty [64]

I don't see your point at all, digging people up and destroying war memorials is not the same as renaming public places or relocating political symbols, infact most post colonial places leave statues etc in place.

History / The Riga Peace Treaty [64]

Desecrating war graves and destroying war monuments is what goofy was suggesting, that is not the same as renaming public places or removing party political symbols. ISIS destroyed Assyrian monuments, the Taliban destroyed the big Buddhas, ISIS in Libya want to destroy Greco-Roman towns. It wouldn't be an attempt to falsify history it would be worse it would be an attempt to basterdise the past.

The de colonial argument always fails at the first economic hurdle.

History / The Riga Peace Treaty [64]

That must be one of the few Guardian articles that is not rabidly anti Russian. It is ridiculous that any explanation need given as to why it's a bad idea to destroy these monuments.

knuckle dragging iconoclasts don't do reason just ask ISIS as they attempt to destroy the past, today blowing up a museum with Polish visitors in Tunisia.

History / Poles should emulate Jews? [153]

All populations start with an identical spread of characteristics including intelligence, Intelligence cannot be measured those suggesting it can need to demonstrate how. People are born the same and should be treated the same.

Creating some artificial measure to rank people is unscientific irreligious and fascist.

Off-Topic / Volkswagen Polo Car question - a timing belt? [30]

It's a real issue the belt/chain should be changed if there are big miles on the clock. On a Polo if the belt breaks the engine will be wrecked no ifs or buts, simply because of the way they are made.

Now the price, it depends on how much the car is worth, you don't want to end up chasing the money. If the belt needs changed the clutch will more than likely need changed unless it has just been done and then possibly the steering rack ( a sealed unit) then the exhaust will go and new tyres. £250 seems a bit steep it's a two hour job and the belt only costs £30 aim to pay about £100-£130.

For£250 I would expect to be carried around in a sedan chair.

Life / Will an English bought TV work In Poland? [20]

Kpc21 is correct, British tv was initially broadcast in mpeg2 during the Digital roll out now it is broadcast in MPEG 2 and the euro standard mpeg4. A basic rule of thumb is that if it says HD on the TV it will receive mpeg4 and thus work in Poland.

There is absolutely nothing in your post that any reasonable and well balanced person could possibly disagree with.

I gather that you are not in favour then, Barney

No I'm not for the very simple reason that I believe that people should be treated equally.
