Real Estate / The cost of a furnished apartment near Warsaw downtown are high? Why? [42]

that's great Warszawski, I read some of valpolmike's posts on another forum and it's his dream to come to Poland.
I know I'm known as the PF herdman :-) but sometimes I like to help.
I just like to help for the warm fuzzy feeling I get.

I'll have time and access to a computer next week..

Real Estate / The cost of a furnished apartment near Warsaw downtown are high? Why? [42]

$ 800.00

That's 2602.08 zloty according to google.com/search?q=dollar+zloty

I don't know the Warsawian rental market but I can look on the internet for such a place if you give me a better idea of where exactly.

I know you said downtown, does that mean the old town? (I know the "old town" was reconstructed from paintings but for the sake of simplicity that's what I will call it.

I know from the other forum that you are not very computer literate but if you'd like I could do a test run, give me an approximate area (including an exact name) and I will do a search for you and show you the results just to set your mind at ease.

I believe this process should be really up to you as on the internet your anonymity would be compromised and I would like you to move in without the whole internet knowing.

I see no problem finding a place for you for that price but I live in krakow and although I presume things are more expensive in Warsaw they can't be that much more.

The only thing is, it is easter, I have much to do and I will only be able to help you next week.

Edit*
I am using a different computer and the cursor seems to jump.... bugger.

valpomike, perhaps if you told us how much you'd be willing to pay for an apartment and how many bedrooms we could do an online search for you or advise you if it's possible at all.

if you are more specific with your questions we can be of greater help.

good luck

That's not all :)

If a polish girl sings about how she will kill her boyfriend, then it's ok

She is not Polish.

Kills was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, to an Afro-Jamaican father and Uruguayan mother,[5] where she attended Bradford Girls' Grammar School. In addition, she studied classical drama at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.[3]

I can think of two great songs off the top of my head that have the man killing his wife/lover

Although I do agree that sexism, ageism, racism, and many isms are one way streets sometimes, on this particular issue, you are off your head.

Law / Bank accounts taxed by up to 10%. Can it happen in Poland? [150]

"The talks have ended as far as the Russian side is concerned," Russian finance minister Anton Siluanov told reporters after two days of crisis talks with his Cypriot counterpart, Michael Sarris.
Having angrily rejected a proposed levy on tax deposits in exchange for the EU bailout, Nicosia had turned to the Kremlin to renegotiate a loan deal, win more financing and lure Russian investors to cut-price Cypriot banks and gas reserves.
Wealthy Russians have billions of euros at stake in Cyprus's outsized and now crippled banking sector. But Mr Siluanov said Russian investors were not interested in Cypriot gas and that the talks had ended without result.

Law / Bank accounts taxed by up to 10%. Can it happen in Poland? [150]

Gazprom, the world's largest extractor of natural gas has offered to bail out the Bank of Cyprus in return for effective exclusive control of the gas reserves off the coast of the island.

That's interesting and a potential way out but at a great loss to the Cypriot people.

It's funny how money works, if you tax people on their savings all hell breaks loose, "these people have saved and for what?"...

but up the retirement age, lower the pension and take the pension money away and it's not such a tragedy in people's minds but it amounts to the same thing.

Italy next, then Portugal and then last but not least Spain.

This will not be a shocker to Irish people who know what their government is cappable of but they had this to say:

The Irish Government welcomed the agreement, describing it as a "positive development for Cyprus, the euro zone as a whole, and Ireland ".

If this were to happen in the PIIGS countries in the E.U., would it not be the end of our European banking system?

It'd take generations for people to trust banks ever again, wouldn't it?

The government have voted against it and now they will try something else.

They are damned either way at this stage, if they take the 10% or if they totally leave it the way it was (more likely something in between),

Anyone with money will take it away from Cyprus anyway as it is too risky.

So expect the banks in CY to be locked down until next week, then a restriction on the movement of money from Cyprus for a fixed period.

I think this is the only course of action they can do now, no matter what the final decision is.

These people are not fit to govern anything, this is really sick.

the vote could be delayed until as late as Friday.

This is mental, how on earth can anyone defend taking people's savings.

This is great news, it has literally made my day. It is the perfect example of a flawed system.

I am not happy about it because of the normal people that are getting screwed but the system is wrong if they go ahead with this.

yes under 100,000

A source close to the consultations said authorities were hoping to cut the tax to 3 per cent from 6.7 per cent for deposits under €100,000

from the Irish times link above.

Has it actually been decided yet? Putin is not a happy cat.

Russian banks had about €9.2 billion ($12 billion) placed with Cypriot banks and corporate deposits amounted to €14.6 billion ($19 billion) at the end of 2012, according to Moody's's rating agency.

Irish Times

It should not effect deposits of 100,000 Euro as they are meant to be guaranteed.

Life / Advocating euthanasia routinely causes scandals in Poland... [63]

you gotta love PF, someone calls modern Poland pre~war Germany based on this internet forum and I get called a troll for finding it funny that the same guy who is against euthanasia saying he couldnt live in a world that allowed it.

as for the topic, I think its very much one of those issues that we all become pseudo philosiphers but when you are in on going agonizing pain, it is totally different.

If you take a look at what critera is needed to preform euthanasia in the neatherlands, you would realize it is not some Alice in wonderland Queen screaming "off with his head!" but there is no point discussing matters that people do not want to hear, better call me a troll and be content with you being right.

History / Life in communist Poland - personal relations [397]

They could have problems at their workplaces.

What kind of problems would the communist party make for those people who did not attend their parades?

Just to clarify, I am asking about life in communism in general, not specifically about your parents.

A document on homelss in communism

Thank you for the link, I will watch it.

Blue birds is from the Bible.

I must have missed that particular Sunday lesson.

Taken at night when decent Poles used to stay in, watching TV and getting ready to bed.

But if they were to attract people (decent or otherwise) at night, where are the people? I just thought it was odd.

Some guys think different. :):):)

Ah sure PF is definitely a Love/Hate relationship :)
Well I for one enjoy your posts and pictures.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2971]

This basically states my opinion on the subject of the Abortions:

Comparing Nazis killing Jews to abortion seems to be the oldest trick in the manipulation book. Godwin's law in full effect.

In Nazi Germany, the penalties for abortion were increased again. From 1943, the provision of abortion to "Aryan" women was threatened with the death penalty.

History / Life in communist Poland - personal relations [397]

A few years later parents told me they had to go.

(from your last post on the first page of this thread.)

What would have happened if they did not attend?

The communist police called militia took care of it - the streets had to be clean - communism couldn`t have homeless people

What did they do with them?

Exactly. those who shun work were called blue birds.

Why? I only know the reference to blue birds in North America, it symbolises happiness but this is the first time I've heard about it as a phrase in Europe.

I still remember giant neon ads in Krakow

With everyone working and the communist police taking care of the homeless, there are no people left on the streets of the photos you posted :)

Good to see you're back Pawian, this place isn't the same without you.

pawian: Milk was sold in giant glass bottles

..............also in bags

They still sell milk in bags in Lithuania.

Pawian, what do you think of communism being used in advertisements?

kresy24.pl/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Lenin-reklama.jpg

given Poland's history it seems ridiculous to me to use such icons to sell things but perhaps Poles see the irony better than me, of using the symbols of communism to sell products?

News / Should government monitor the net in Poland? [38]

In the field of telecommunications, data retention (or data preservation) generally refers to the storage of call detail records (CDRs) of telephony and internet traffic and transaction data (IPDRs) by governments and commercial organisations.

The primary objective in government data retention is traffic analysis and mass surveillance. By analysing the retained data, governments can identify the locations of individuals, an individual's associates and the members of a group such as political opponents. These activities may or may not be lawful, depending on the constitutions and laws of each country. In many jurisdictions access to these databases may be made by a government with little or no judicial oversight (e.g. USA, UK, Australia).[citation needed]
In the case of commercial data retention, the data retained will usually be on transactions and web sites visited.
Data retention also covers data collected by other means (e.g. by automatic numberplate recognition systems) and held by government and commercial organisations.
