Life / Racism in Poland - the future [558]

I read some Poles tried. but UK Holland the low countries sweeden and denmark help the most.

Have you ever checked the number of Poles honored in Yad Vashem, compared to the number of people from other countries?

When you finally do, do you realize that Poland was the only country where helping Jews meant automatic death sentence, right there on the spot? Inspite of that, well... check those numbers in Yad Vashem.

Oh, and while you are researching the topic, you may also want to check info about ZEGOTA (no other occupied country had a similar organization) and Jan Karski. That ought to tell you something about the love UK (and US) had for Jewish victims of Germany during WW2.

There is more, but for now take the baby steps I suggest above.

there were plenty of poles killing jews to save themselves and their own families.. don't you all fool yourselves. not all things were all that peachy.

I'm sure there were plenty of those. The issue though is the definition of plenty. To some 2 is plenty and two too many. To others "plenty" carries a connotation of majority. That of course was not the case in Poland. As it was not the case in Hungary where about 1/2 million Jews were sacrificed to save only 1000 rich and influential Jews. Is then 1000 out of 500,000 plenty?

If the future mirrors the past then we all end up being ourselves forever.

Good point and I came its iteration (but don't remember the source):

history teaches us that history teaches us nothing.

Language / Polish sayings [237]

"Żeby Cię kaczka kopła"
The proper Polish word for "kopła" is "kopnęła"
I think it's an insult.

It can also be used to express astonishment, disbelief.

Co wolno wojewodzie to nie tobie smordzie!

My dad always says this, its hard to translate though. Maybe someone can help.

I'd say:
what's good for the goose is NOT always good for the gander.

- Gosc w dom, woda do zupy. (when the guests arrive thin the soup with water)
- Jak sie nie ma co sie lubi, to sie lubi co sie ma. (If you can't have what you like, you have to like what you have.

The rules of Polish grammar in tabular formats (at least most of them). The rules are explained in both Polish and English.

Are are you so bitter because you were conquered by the greeks, the turks

Could you name some major battles and/or wars won by Greeks over Poles?
As an additional exercise, could you describe the Turkish conquest of Poland?
Would you prefer to write about Polish-Ottoman War (1672–1676) or The Siege of Vienna?

On the racial issues though, I fully agree with you. I see no place for it in any civilized society.

You Polish might not be racist on this forum but the majority of your comrades that come to work in the UK are

Do you have any stats from reputable source to support that claim?

I'm not writing an essay Darius you complete pleb, I am talking from my experience!

You never met me, so you don't whether I'm stupid or smart. I haven't written anything racist. As a matter of fact racism is not acceptable to me. I merely asked you to provide some sources for some of the claims you made, such as:

- all Poles are racist
- Poland was conquered by Greeks and Turks

You were incapable to provide answers to any of the above, so you decided to resort to foul language. I still don;t understand how that makes me and idiot, or whatever else your "tolerant" personality makes you write about me.

this is approximate to the likelihood of finding stats telling us that polish people are rasist, that polish women are in fact ugly?

Actually, we can't use this parallel, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Racism rarely is.

can we conclude that because the likelihood of finding stats supporting this is approximate to the likelihood of finding stats telling us that polish people are rasist, that polish women are in fact ugly?

The allegation of racism is a serious one. Racism is a criminal offense, at least here in Canada. Your law and ours are similar. The accuser carries burden of proof. You can prove that particular individuals are racist, but to prove that the entire nation is... well... roll up the sleeves, you got a lot of work to do. Before you have a compelling body of evidence (other than 5 or six Poles you met), you are just a story teller.

you missed the point dude - even after dandeanuk spelt it out for you

I admit I missed a few of his points. Do you mean the ones where he offends me without good reason to do so?
The fella throws in ideas and statements without any proof. He even rewrites history. How's that for a reliable source of info?

Are some Poles racist?
Hell, sure some are. I know a few myself.
All all Poles racist?
I dunno. There is over 50 million of them around the world. I didn't have a chance to meet them all. Did you?

im am not saying that poles are rasist, i am saying that its pretty silly to ask for stats in order to prove they are not

If you say "Poles are racists" then it's silly to say so without having some proof, as you are generalizing an entire nation, so yes, stats would be nice to see.

If you say "some Poles are racist" they you are right, and all the proof we need is your statement based on personal experience.

how about the majority of poles are racist then? do you concur?

The word "majority" is quantitative (50% + 1), so no, accepting this without actual numbers would not be an option for purposes other than general bickering.

If the majority of Polish were like you here on this forum, then everything would be cool, but are you the rule or the exception to the rule.

I think it would be good for you to regroup (so to speak) and have some principles of a good argument in mind:

1. never use words such as: all, always, every time etc, without having a proof. All it takes is one exception and your statements are false.

2. avoid name calling - paradoxically, it doesn't necessarily describe your opponent, but it can say a lot about you and weaknesses in your arguments.

3. always check facts before referring to them - the Greek and Turkish stuff you mentioned before gave you away as an easy target.

Other than that, I hope you kick the asses of all racist you meet, be it Poles, Brits or others.

Travel / Photos from Poland [258]

in relation to your post of some girls drink through straws ... i commented on the fact i dont you see i am a vodka drinker and i have never seen anyone drink vodka through a straw

In the olden days (OK, when I was a student back in Poland) , using straw to drink alcohol was a simple way to get drunk fast, while economizing on the amount of alcohol needed. Straws were used for beer, but I never saw anyone use them for vodka. To boost, and accelerate the effect of vodka they drank it using tea or table spoons. Or simply little glass shots, but the trick was not to let it go down right away, but rinse your mouth with the drink, holding it in your mouth for a few seconds to about a minute.

Food / Polish Sour Milk / Maślanka [44]

that method can be also used to make your own cottage cheese. One difference though - you don't just heat it up, but instead keep it on low heat for a few hours until you see the white stuff is separated from the watery (yellowy color) fluid. The next step is to drain the whole thing with cottage cloth (ususaly overnight) , and thus be ready to make a real cheese cake.

Some Polish dishes are made by letting them stand for days, like żurek, bigos, serwatka, kwaśne mleko.

They are not "let" stand for days. That's how you make them, or how you make them acquire the right taste. (think wine)

Language / Short Polish<->English translations [1049]

"ciumek" is an informal word which derives from "ciumkac", It means to kiss or to produce kissing sound. Ciumek would then mean a person who kisses or is kissed, and it is likely an endearing term , except when context may clearly indicate otherwise, or in some slang expressions such as "ciumkać bigosa" (to masturbate)

Yet that doesn't justify the slavery, regardless who was benefiting from it, correct?

You asked for a source. Neither the source, nor the post pointing to it make and attempt to justify slavery.
