Food / Comparison of supermarkets in Poland. Which one is the cheapest? [30]

Depends what you buy - you will find each supermarket is cheap for something, none of them are cheap for everything on my list.

Just a few examples for March (prices may now have changed) :

quality coffee - cheapest at Tesco
soya milk - cheapest at Biedronka
digestive biscuits - cheapest at Auchan
vegetarian (animal fat free) croquettes - cheapest at Carrefour
from concentrate grapefruit juice - cheapest at Lidl

These were not special offers, but usual prices, which of course do tend to go up from time to time anyway.

Of course, few of us have the time to go everywhere and shop around like this!

Thanks for your updates on this.

A price comparison page for food might be useful...

I'll come back to you guys soon.

Is there not a version of mysupermarket.co.uk in Poland?

Problem is, to get the best prices on everything you buy, you have to travel, spend time and fuel if driving. Most people can't. In the UK, all the main supermarkets deliver although they charge extra for that, usually. Online, you select your groceries and choose a delivery slot. Delivery is from GBP3 to GBP10, from what I recall.

Food / Comparison of supermarkets in Poland. Which one is the cheapest? [30]

I do too, despite the fact I hardly speak a word of Polish I still manage to buy at the market stalls, all very honest even when I get confused with the money (I have in the past confused a 10 for a 100 and handed it over thinking it was a 10 !!). Whenever I can I prefer to buy the fresh produce there, eggs etc. Even when I was in my large town in the UK, my neighbour used to give me free eggs from her hens - supermarket eggs are rarely on my list.

But you do have to shop around at the supermarkets here, just as in Britain, for example a bag of frozen same brand of bób (broad beans) are 7.99 in one well-known supermarket here in Poland but 6.49 at Auchan. If you use ingredients a lot, such savings are important over a year

Life / Moving to Poland Part-Time (probably Katowice) [56]

well, up to 1,000,000, it'd be a pretty awesome house for that price, a normal sized gaff you could prob get for 350,000

I'd prefer normal sized, the thought of the housework in a 1m zl job fills me with dread, I hate the Hoover as it is

Travel / Any Anglican churches in Poland? [35]

When I was in the UK, I was working with dozens of native Brits of all backgrounds, from what I gathered they were all the same as me - not the slightest bit interested in religion. Now, whether that's a good or bad thing is beyond my knowledge, but I have no interest in religious activity whatsoever although I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm an atheist because everything in the world and beyond didn't get here on its own - but organised religion is of no appeal at all

Maybe, but,a lot, like me,would never talk about things in person.

You are right, I acknowledge that. Although I've no beliefs, I respect others' traditions and views and wish them well

Real Estate / Renting in Poland - tenants' rights? [51]

Have done a search of the archive. The below is a summary of what I found, perhaps it needs to be verified as I don't know how accurate it is and contracts may vary.

The questions I have are about renting a property in Poland:-

1. Does a landlord have a right of entry to a paying tenant's accommodation?

2. Can a tenant change the lock for security reasons?

3. Who is financially responsible for repairs to fixtures and fittings that fail, for example a window that does not close, failing oven or failing WC?

4. If a tenant fails to pay the rent, at what point can a landlord enter and gain possession?

5. What documents does a landlord generally require from a Briton or other EU resident pre-contract and/or post-contract?

6. What notice does a landlord need to give under normal circumstances, to a paying tenant?

7. What if a paying tenant cannot leave on the agreed last day of a tenancy for whatever reason?

8. Who does a tenant pay the monthly service charge/admin charge to?

The info I found in the archive:

Contracts should contain a notice period clause, termed as "okres wypowiedzl".

Most rental contracts are 6 months fixed then the tenant needs to give one month's notice. Presumably this is the day before a rent due date plus one month.

Landlords can usually give just 1 month's notice to a tenant if the tenant misbehaves in some way, eg damage or illegal activity.

(above subject to verification and may be inaccurate or vary from contract to contracts)

Anybody who can answer some or all of the questions above, or add some knowledge, or correct the above etc etc - please respond.

Real Estate / Renting in Poland - tenants' rights? [51]

InWroclaw, Polish law for rental contracts is very ambiguous

Not got any problems, yet, just want to know where I stand. Thank you for that useful tip on the advice evenings!

@InKrakow, many thanks. Seems much is similar to English & Welsh law except that landlords generally need to give 2 months notice in E&W if a rolling contract, known as a statutory periodic tenancy. Also, seems Polish law requires an "evict to" address, which surprisingly E&W law does not. There's an example of Polish law being far more civilised, unless I am misunderstanding it.

Only thing I don't understand is how my landlord pays me for the monthly admin - by crediting it to my rent?

I've no intention of being a bad tenant and have very much A1 references from my UK letting agents going back 8 years, but I just wanted to know what's what so that I can determine whether any new Poland landlord I encounter is legitimate or a chancer.

InKrakow, Warszawski - again many thanks.

Real Estate / Renting in Poland - tenants' rights? [51]

in practice there's often no way of legally evicting them.

I see, but I guess they send "The Boys" in if they want to get someone out.

All I'm looking for is a decent normal landlord who appreciates a good tenant with references. Made some enquiries at the cheaper end including the Daft site's ads - but everything is let (rented out already) so am having no luck. Seems pretty buoyant for realistic price landlords now.

Thanks Jon, all the ads I replied to mentioned the cztnsz as additional, although perhaps they would collect that and the rent together.

I'm still searching - they do definitely exist in my price range - but go quickly.

Food / Is there a Indian store in Wroclaw? [20]

There is also a spice and coffee beans shop in the covered market of kiosks next to Kaufland Supermarket on Bardska. It's at the end, opposite the lingerie stall. They have most things there. 133 and 134 bus goes there if not driving, some trams fairly near too, 31 Plus maybe.

I'd strongly suggest you take this job which is quite well paid.

Life / Can no longer receive TVP Info Wrocław on digital DVBT [25]

Picking up HD channels now suddenly, but have lost TVP Info Wrocław. Have TVP Info Opole but Wroclaw has vanished. Any ideas why? Aerial/antenna is still in the same place.

I have moved the aerial now to see if I could get TVP Wroc back but no luck - instead on retuning I have an increased list of channels (excluding TVP Wroc) including Polsat and Polsat News but the screen says "scrambled channel" even for these free to air stations.

Any ideas what's happened? TVP Wroc is useful to me.

Life / Can no longer receive TVP Info Wrocław on digital DVBT [25]

Thanks Peter, I will try to do that.

I should perhaps also add that maybe Polsat etc is not free on DVBT, only free on analogue terrestrial

Not successful :o(

Can't see how to switch to mux1 etc - scanned 64 (818mhz) but nothing found. No other options there.
Model is a Hyundai DVBH 331.
Spec: IF bandwidth 7mhz & 8mhz, input frequency 170 - 230mhz, 470 - 860mhz

I can't see how to make it scan 64 differently - the way it is scanning now it finds 0.

According to Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyfrowy_Polsat
these are the free ones on Polish digital TV

TVN7
Polsat Sport News
TV6
TV Biznes
Euronews
TV Puls
TVS
TTV
Mango 24
Tele5
TV5Monde
TVP1HD and TVP2HD
TVP Historia

I have I think TVP Historia and Kulturia, TVP Opole, TVP 1 & 2 HD, TVP Polonia, and used to have TVP Wroclaw.

There are quite a few others (excluding Wroclaw) but they say "scrambled" and do not play out, although their EPG does show.

I don't think I can unscramble the others as the tuner unit does not have a facility for a card or code to unlock premium channels.

Life / Can no longer receive TVP Info Wrocław on digital DVBT [25]

Thanks

My set top box doesn't pick anything up from there. I am using a 42dB gain high quality powered indoor aerial that was fine before - now any adjusting of its position does not bring back TVP Wroclaw. As for the other free channels, most of them were never shown on the screen list.

From your link above, which confirms Peter O's info

- I confirm I have the TV1 & 2 HD and Polonia TV - but TVP Info Wroc is gone.
This happened a few days ago when the weather was sunny and is the same with the rain now.

Just checked again: I am receiving TVP Info Opole and all the others only on 570mhz bandwidth 8mhz 98-100%. No other transmitter is being received. Corresponds to this transmitter only: radiopolska.pl/wykaz/pokazdv_nadajnik.php?pid=592

I can't find a position for the aerial where it picks up any other transmitters. There are too many large buildings nearby perhaps.
Analogue reception is pretty poor so not worth bothering with here either.

Life / Can no longer receive TVP Info Wrocław on digital DVBT [25]

You are using an indoor aerial ?

Thanks for all those links!

It's a quality indoor aerial, pretty much as good as they get. The block doesn't have a working roof aerial. If I turn off the amp, I get nothing, reception here is very poor due to nearby taller buildings (eg ghosting, noise, etc)

It doesn't matter where I position the aerial, it either picks up 570mhz or nothing.

Looks like I'm stuffed until I move out to Bielany or similar, where the TV reception is very easy to do.

Yes, at the back of the Polish language section of the instructions booklet, where it says Problem - tall building(s) around, I can only receive a few channels - under the Solution column it says Sir is lucky to receive anything then. Get cable, or sir is a tighfisted loser. Cut back on the mature cheddar and buy a TV package.

So, thank you TVP Wroclaw for changing how you broadcast if that is the case - causing me and probably many others in parts of Wroc to do without our local channel on DVB-T unless we fork out for cable.

LOL, Sod the TV, keep eating Cheddar.

Quite right, after all it is Cathedral CIty, frankly I don't want to give it up :o) (Memo to mods: I do not work for Dairy Crest!)

I'm just guessing, but for example I can get Polsat Sport News listed on the channels but not receive it - screen says "scrambled channel". PSN is not scrambled, it should be free to air. Polsat Sport Extra is scrambled but not the other one. I reckon I am getting "scrambled" for the ones that are too weak too, because it's getting just 55% quality on PSN. TVP Wro has vanished completely of course, probably for the reasons you describe.

Anyway I knew using the word scrambled would get me hungry, so the frying pan is coming out and DVB-T will have to wait for another day :o)

Life / Can no longer receive TVP Info Wrocław on digital DVBT [25]

I think that some of the channels being shown as scrambled aren't in reality although most are. Where the box says scrambled the signal is under a consistent 90% which seems to be the minimum for some sort of reception. No doubt some of the channels will not display even if the signal were 100% because they are scrambled although probably the screen would show an advert for getting the station unscrambled.

If I were staying in this flat I'd buy an outdoor aerial and clip it to the balcony but I'm moving I hope so won't bother. Probably even then, I won't get TVP Wro as it's completely vanished.

Thanks again for the help and advice.

Life / Can no longer receive TVP Info Wrocław on digital DVBT [25]

Well, that's interesting! Where I do have a station (eg TVP Opole, TVP2 HD etc) the signal is 90-100%. I'm going to get an extension coax lead tomorrow and pop the indoor aerial outside for a test and see what I pick up. In the past I've aligned satellite dishes without a meter, so if I can do that then I'll find any signal that's out there because don't have to be anywhere near as precise with this antenna as I had to be with the sat dish in the UK when I installed it

Quick update for anyone who needs this info...

By moving the amplified aerial outside, TVP Wroclaw can again be received although it's weak compared to before, about 65%.

Can also receive intermittently TV6, Eska, Polo, TTV, etc. Not Polsat Sports News, however.

Can also manual search and see if anything is to be found because a bar on the screen gets colourful if there are signals there. Mostly there's nothing receivable, save the above.

What needs to be done is of course to fix an outdoor aerial with probably amplification, I think conventiona; aerials have a degree of gain built in but I am not sure. (With the gain/amp off, nothing is received with the indoor aerial whether in or out.)

Now I've lost TVP Opole, Historia, Kultura, TVP2 etc. A search for channels now brings up Polsat News and others but they're apparently "scrambled" and there's nothing showing on the list as free to view.

Have they turned another transmitter off, or is this a local issue? I am near Skytower.

UK, Ireland / Ad from my UK newspaper today : not worth a zloty [13]

Checking Polish money is not counterfeit

Just found this on the Bank of Poland's website in English - good for visitors for Euro 2012 as gives some guidance on how to detect and avoid fake banknotes.

Downloadable PDF

nbp.pl/en/banknoty/zabezpieczenia_en.pdf

Some of the advice from the PDF:-

Check all security features to make sure
that the banknote is genuine

10 zloty and 20 zloty notes
¥ Feel the printed elements that can be identified by touch
¥ Look at the watermark and check its authenticity, look for
the security thread with micro lettering and the perfect matching
of elements complementing each other on the front and the
reverse side of the banknote.

An attempt to pay with a counterfeit banknote is a criminal offense.

Counterfeit banknotes are seized without compensation (Article 35 of the Act on National
Bank of Poland (Dziennik Ustaw 97.140.938 as amended), Regulation of the President of
the NBP on seizure of counterfeit notes and coins (Monitor Polski 89.32.255 as amended).

Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

What can you carry? Not much legally.

Why do market stalls in Poland sell CS or CS-like sprays, and batons etc? Why do some specialist shops sell stun guns and CS or "OC spray" (not sure what OC is) to anyone with an ID proving age?

Is it legal to carry these items in Poland? You can walk down the road with a stun gun (paralizator) or pepper spray in your bag or pocket?

In the UK, a person would I am pretty sure be arrested at the port of arrival if found to be carrying any of the above (assuming OC is CS or a pepper spray)

Just a bump in case anyone can clarify -

stun gun (not Taser) - legal to carry in Poland by Joe Publicski?

CS - ditto?

baton - ditto?

Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

Quite legal. It's not that popular to carry, though.

In the UK you can only carry that marker spray that puts some colour on the cheeks of an attacker, but is non toxic etc. Am very surprised a person could legally carry CS here in Poland, The CS or OC in one shop (not sure exactly what that is) actually carries some Policja word on it.

cs can
InWroclaw

Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

that it's legally a firearm in the UK.

That's absolutely correct.

Pepper spray and CS gas or CS spray are not the same thing.

Pepper spray, also known as OC spray (from "Oleoresin Capsicum"), OC gas, and capsicum spray,/ ... In Poland, hand-held pepper spray (called precisely in Polish Penal Code "a hand-held disabling gas thrower") is considered a weapon, but can be carried by anyone over 18 without further registration or permission.[33]

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper_spray#Europe

In the United Kingdom, "Any weapon of whatever description designed or adapted for the discharge of any noxious liquid, gas or other thing" is a Prohibited Weapon, under S.5 of The Firearms Act 1968..

[Moved from]: I'm just looking, to a shop assistant

When in shops or at market stalls, staff often ask me what I want. I usually just say no thanks, but would prefer to know the correct phrase for saying to them "I'm just looking, thanks" or "I'm just browsing, thanks."

Is the correct phrase something like "Tylko ogla, dzięki"?

Please correct me or advise !
