Food / How is this herring product typically served? [74]

hot herring over dumplings.

what do you mean by dumplings? pyzy? (what type of pyzy ziemniaczane or drożdżowe?) kopytka? kluski (again... what type?)

and things are not served 'over' dumplings..... dumplings are served 'in' sauce or 'with' something....

I'm sure somewhere in Poland some people have had herring served hot somehow but it's very marginal thing.... conservatively speaking I'd say 95% of herring in Poland is served cold.

I have a Danish cookbook that featured breaded and fried herring and a Polish friend thought it sounded insane.... actually they have breaded and fried herring but... it's served cold in a vinegar brine

USA, Canada / Staying in the USA - do I need work visa to apply? [95]

Getting a six month work VISA seems most profitable for them

Does the US do that? Weird... Camp America (specific program name that became a generic term) used to be popular with some students. They'd go to the US for the summer working in places like amusement parks or children's camps and have a few weeks free at the end to sightsee.

I don't see many posters for those programs around anymore...

A number of years ago I knew a Polish student who was a waitress in a country club for the summer in a program like that and they were so happy they told her she didn't "have to" go vack and volunteered to arrange a longer term visa. They got very chilly when she thanked them but told them she didn't want to live long term in the US (her first priority was finishing her studies back home).

News / Life and work of Stepan Bandera - controversial figure of Europe [42]

Losers.

Simply more advanced than primitive russians stuck mentally in the 19th century and dreams of empire....

The mongols set you back 300 years and since then you've only gained about half of it back....

Primitive russian ideas of empire puzzle and mystify the more highly evolved countries who want nothing to do with the loser russian 'culture'....

ussian state TV? Or listened to their "diplomats" and politicians? The adjective 'normal' just doesn't collocate

Very true. Supposedly a lot of it is for show like Solovyov (second hand from someone who'd worked with him 15 years ago) who's actually pretty liberal but has to pump up the refime...

That's the greatest weakness/flaw of the russian system (whether the Tsar, the USS or putain): It requires many or most people to lie in public to people who know they're lying and who will lie to them in return.

No wonder russian cope is a lot about how much they love 'truth' (which ends up being a bunch of rationalizations to deal with the cognitive dissonance that they feel).

News / THE ARMY OF POLAND - THE REALITY [493]

We did not expect them to resist

for normal people that's a sign that the invasion was a terrible, terrible idea..... but for russians it's just a cue to keep killing civilians and dreaming of empire....

A Ukrainian once told me that even well-intentioned russians never understand that Ukrainians have never like them much at the collective level and dislike their servile nature and lazy apathy in the face of oppression...

just go away, stop trying to cover your shame here.... you are a terrible person who's weirdly proud of being from a violent and terrible country with a violent and terrible culture that no one wants (esp Ukrainians)

forever a thing of the past in Europe. Yet, here it is

russia brings war back to Europe..... how are russians not dying of shame for belonging to such a primitive and violent country?

News / TVP producer fired for allowing rainbow flag on the air... [244]

what we all know about Poland...from other Polish natives!

Some years ago (over 10) a Polish acquaintance spent an academic research year in the US (somewhere in the midwest near Chicago but not in it).

Anyhoo, he noticed that the local Polonia fell into different groups depending on when they left Poland and each group automatically assumed nothing had changed since they left.

So those that left in the late 70's or 80's still thought in terms of ration cards and toilet paper shortages (which haven't been a thing since 1988). Even occasional trips back didn't shake their fundamental idea of what was going on....

The inflo (too small to be called an 'influx' yet) only began in the last 5 years or so so unless the other Polish natives found themselves in your classes since then they likely don't have much clue about what's going on now in the country....

Did you look at any of the video links I provided?

Poland is no longer mono-ethnic. Even without non-Europeans the influx (the word fits here) of Ukrainians enough non-Europeans are arriving that that version of Poland is history.

Get with the times!

so I've read in local newspapers

citations....

meanwhile (these are just videos with titles in English... if I knew enough of other asian languages to search I'm fairly sure I'd find lots more....

youtube.com/watch?v=l5VRm5l7HOw

youtube.com/watch?v=c_h5AUT2JTw

youtube.com/watch?v=ROADAHYnwQY

I remember not long before the pandemic going to a hyper market to shop on Saturday afternoon... around half the conversations I heard were in other languages (not just russian/Ukrainian but also in French, English, Spanish and a few I couldn't identify)

Most of the employees were Ukrainian but I also heard other languages between them....

It's nowhere near places like Berlin or NYC or London but Poland as a very ethnically homogenous place is over.... hopefully the inflows can be held at slow enough a pace to manage integration.

Poland remains one of the most ethnically homogeneous nations on the continent of Europe

That ship has sailed... you cannot walk for 5 minutes in any Polish city without seeing a fair amount of non-Polish people (not counting Ukrainians who are mostly invisible as non-Polish until they speak).

PiS was handing out work-study permits in Asia like candy for years and there's been migration from other sources too.

You really need to catch up...

Where's the nihilism and decay in Communist China?

Confucianism is a de facto religion (minus supernatural elements) and so is Taoism.... so they have religion just not a western one.

And NYC is not very religious and the more religious areas have a lot less dysfunction.

what draws you to all the religious threads ... as an authority on Christianity ?

You flatter me! I'm no authority! Just a person interested in the world and how it works.

Most societies work best with a moderate amount of religion (too much = regression and stagnation while not enough = nihilism and decay) so I'm interested in how religions work...

while you Catholics

I am not a Christian, much less a Catholic.... I'm agnostic.

I'm interested in the.... processes around belief (not just religious) and recognize that many/most people do better with some kind of religion going on, but personally I have no capacity for religious faith.

A Cult is a religion regarded as unorthodox

Technically in popular usage a 'cult' is a group with some aspects of a religion but with others that are unrelated (more sociological than spiritual)

I think JWs, Mormons (maybe 7th day Adventists and maybe Christian Scientists) as separate religions derived from Christianity. Some of them slip into cultish (sociologically speaking) behavior, especially the JWs but they're more religion than cult like.

The vid I linked to uses the Nicene Creed as the dividing point between Christian and non-Christian faiths, which is, I guess as good a metric as any....

All you have to do is take Jesus Christ as your personal Savior

Not how most Christian denominations work... becoming a Catholic requires education and training...

is it an American trait to take it so seriously?

Depends.... catholics do a lot of mission work (esp to non-Christian or recently Christian countries)... it is an American trait (for some protestants and semi- or pseudo- Christian followers to think that anyone out of their denomination is danmed to hell...

US Southern Baptists tend to believe that only they are _true_ Christians

Mormons (arguably not really Christians) and JWs (likewise) also.

Those are all groups that are active in Poland to various degrees hunting up new converts among the catholics....

That's not actually true.

The section about Catholicism begins at 8:24, I'm sure the creator (a very young American) would value your input and corrections.

Where did you copy and paste that from ?

Not copy paste, but summaries (with some quotes) from the video, which I left a link for (aren't I considerate?)

concentrate on humility rather than pride

That's very hard for narcissists...

Are you Catholics not taught to share the word just like us born again are ?

Lots of people here might have seen this already, but it's very interesting and gives a quick guide to how various denominations of Christianity differ and what they have in common.

youtube.com/watch?v=tzLS4O7YaUg

shorter version:

protestants: think the bible has more authority than the church

sub types
baptists - adult baptism and personal relationship with jesus is what's most important
anglican - mish mash but concentrates on balancing reason, scripture and tradition
methodists - add spiritual experience to the mix and seek to achieve holiness on earth through works and charity (in addition to faith)
lutherans - about law and gospel, don't look to your own experience look to jc and the gospel
presbyterians - orderly theology nerds

catholics and orthodox: think the church has more authority than the bible

subdivisions
catholics - all about authority (from St Pete to the present pope) and answers, they're really into having answers for everything, participating in the church is a necessary expression of faith and necessary for salvation

orthodox - all about tradition and not interested in answers at all, it's all about mystical experience less interesed in 'salvation' (no original sin) than in sharing in the divine nature of god through church services

The Ethiopian Orthodox Church (far older than any kind of protestatism) uses a Bible with 81 books....

Roman Catholics have 73....

Most modern protestants use only 66....

And again, you have no first hand knowledge what any of them say unless you know Biblical Hebrew, Aramaic and/or New Testament Greek so you rely exclusively on translations.... (unless you're one of the kooky King James only people who think that it supercedes and replaces the original texts....)

So there's more than one Christian Bible and many, many, many translations into English and constant reinterpretations of what the original texts say.

will, however, survive much longer than any other system of ethics - with humans as the only point of reference

What about Confucianism? It serves as the dominant ethical system of the oldest ongoing civilization on the planet....

Daoism also doesn't seem very rooted in the supernatural....

Stable ethical systems need a supernatural element.

But religions absolutely do change over time... they might change a tad slower than a purely secular system might but that doesn't mean they are unchanging...

Restrict it to RC and rules for what is or isn't allowed have changed.... a lot over the last 80 years.
