History / Crazy 1990s in Poland - transition from communism to capitalism - stories [108]

I didn`t like that song coz it was so depressing and exaggerated

I did like it, precisely because of what you said.
It was deliberately depressing and exaggerated to make a point.
I think he made his point well.
And my experience of Poland at that time was not too far from what he was warning about.

Have you ever seen W.C. Fields?

Yeah, now I suspect that he actually was drunk in all those films...still very funny though....I have just read a story about the making of the film "Lawrence of Arabia" and apparently both Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif spent most of their time drunk out of their skulls!

This makes interesting reading, comparing the corruption level by country;

Do you not see that you are obsessed?
You need help.

Life / Bribery and corruption 'fact of life' in Poland? [152]

According to media reports, PiS Parliament Speaker KuchciƄski used the taxpayers' money to transport his family and friends on VIP planes

That type of stuff is normal in all western narions.....would you prefer the Russian system where only Putin can gain those privileges?

News / Corruption scanadal in the European Parliament [30]

Look, sooner or later Poland will be ideologically the same as the rest of Western Europe

You are probably right there, but by then, I believe that Europe will swing to the right wing of politics.
Where will that leave your supposed left leaning young Poles?

Your complete obsession with right wing politics marks you out as a bit of a loony.

Genealogy / Am I Polish? My great grandmother was Polish.... [24]

am i polish..?

Please ignore some of the negative posts you may have had.
There are a few trolls on here.
You are obviously Jewish but that does not mean you cannot be Polish.
But your Polish ancestry is too far back to be relevant.
If your parents or even grandparents were Polish then I get the connection.
But great grandparents is just too distant.
If you feel the need to do it, please explore your Polish ancestry.Because it may be fascinating.
But don't think that you are in any way Polish.

Off-Topic / East Europe's Wild Nature - flora and fauna (zoological thread) [24]

You mean burning and demolishing Ukrainian churches by Polish police before the war???

You are the same as the leftists in the UK and the USA.

You are ashamed of your cultural history.

You are a leftard moron with no sense of balance, reason or history.
The way our ancestors behaved was not in a manner acceptable by many now.
But why should historical figures be judged by the woke morals of today?

History / History of two Neighbors: Poland - Germany Interrelations [283]

After some back and forth, the Polish defense minister wants to have the Patriot anti-aircraft systems stationed in the country..

And why shouln't they?

Poland has suffered historically from Germanic people in Germany Prussia and Austria.
But they suffered even more under Russian barbarians.
I think Poles have made their peace with Germans.
That was in the past, Germans have changed.
Russians have not.
They are still the same barbarians they were 100 years ago.
In 2022, Germans are our friends and Russians are still the enemy.

History / Recommended Poland's history books [257]

Well now, he is Polish

Actually he is not.
He was born in New York and Grew up in England.
So, like me, he is an Anglo Pole.
So my opinion is equal to his.

He's quite right in my view when he says that Poles are neither romantic nor passionate

You are basing your views on your knowledge of post communist Poles.
Zamoyski and I had little influence from them but more from the Polish exiles, who very much showed their passionate and romantic side.Which is why I can't understand his comments.

Communism did kill some of the true Polish character, but that character lived on in exile.
@Atch
I think you miss that understanding.

. The cynical part comes, I think, from the communist period.

Which has never effected Polish exiles.

Pawian ignored the relevance of the Polish diaspora.
But it is huge.
Population of Poland 40 million.
Polish Diaspora 20 million.
1.USA 10 million.
2.Brazil 3 million.
3.Germany 3 million.
4.UK 1 million.
5.Canada 1 million.
6.France up to 1 million.
7.Argentina 500,000
8.Lithuania 260,000
9.Australia 180,000
10.Norway 108,000.

Pawian, never ignore the Polish diaspora.....You need them.

"false assumptions

What assumptions would those be?

He states very early in his book that Poles are not passionate people.

That told me straight away that he did not understand Poles.

Language / "Putschke" - Please help me figure out a nickname my grandfather called me [30]

@Colormum

I suspect that you are American
Polish Americans are a different breed to the rest of the Polish Diaspora and tended to play by different rules.
They made up words, some of them very English sounding.
And the fact that your dad was American and only your Grandfather was Polish, enforces that.
The bottom line is, I don't think that term has any connection to Poland at all.
Sorry, but you are just not very Polish.

Language / Busha and JaJa [140]

That has never ceased to fascinate me that one can call babcia busha

I only ever knew babcia and dziadek.

There is a difference between Pole Ams and Anglo Poles.

The Yanks wanted to simplify or maybe Americanise things whilst the Brits held on to tradition more.

UK, Ireland / How do the Polish and People with Polish Ancestry feel about British Royality [61]

It never ceases to amaze me how much Americans are enamored by British Royalty.

I have no idea why you are so surprised by this.As an American, you should understand your own people.

The British/English style of life, language, culture, royals etc have always made a huge impression on most Americans

Blimey!
Alert!Alert!.....a sensible post from Pawian!

They can never forget they originate as a nation from the Mayflower voyage.

So true....much as they hate to admit it and despite the fact that many immigrants from many nations made America great, the founding fathers were all British.

Americans can never escape that fact.

Love / What happens when you marry into a Polish family... [19]

Poles (men and women) to wear their heart on their sleaves, cry openly, and emote uncontrollably

Not an aspect of Poles that I have ever known.
Yes, Poles can get very emotional, but uncontrollably?
I think it is more a Jewish and Middle Eastern trait.
