Beans cause... gas. To counteract that you want an at least equal amount of grains (dry weight). This is why rice and beans in some form is worldwide poor people food (protein complimentarity with reduced gas). Every region of Italy has some kind of bean and pasta dish (again pasta = grain).

The breading is not nearly enough grain to counteract the gas (though garbanzos aren't the worst in terms of gas).

As a native speaker of GAE (who's had more contact with British types than over 95% of the population), American has a very different language ... feel.... than British. In some ways spoken British usage is like Swedish for a Norwegian -- understandable but still foriegn.

Also note that after that victory the Orban government used its power to jerrymander the country and create an electoral system so that he only has to get about 40 percent of the votes to get a two thirds or so majority.

I'm a little surprised PiS didn't try that (imagine the protests if they had tried.....)


Part of the problem of being part of Polonia and not knowing Polish is that you fall behind the news cycle.... feelings toward Hungary have definitely cooled ever since Orban came out as pro-russian (he doesn't call it that but....)

Orban has even toned down celebrating the anniversary of the Hungarian 1956 uprising (because russians say it was a fascist revolt bravely put down by 'real' Hungarians and soviets).

Will relations improve in the future (given the past)? Probably but only without Orban (who's indicated he more or less wants to be president-for-life) or his ilk.

Eventually... but some come very, very close (some have been in Poland a long time). Last year on a streetcar, some teens came around collecting for the Ukrainian army. Both a Polish friend and myself thought they were Polish volunteers until we heard them talk among themselves.

A few years ago a young cashier started at the local Biedronka and I wondered why her name tag was misspelled (ending in -iia which I now recognize). I didn't hear any kind of accent and even a Polish neighbor said it was only after a long time that he noticed a very slight accent (sometimes not all the time).

Both very nice, I've only been to Portugal once but it's lovely country and Portuguese people are bit more relaxed and open to outsiders than the Spanish (though I love Spain too).

Been to Malta five or six times and love it. If i had to settle there I would choose either Ghawdex (Gozo) the second island (less crowded and generally a bit more laid back) or Mellieha in the north. A lot of stairs cause it's hilly but also less crowded feeling than in the big urban area (Valletta/Birkirkara etc). Mosta would be nice as a very central location, no sea view but relatively quick to get to other places and not super crowded.

No article needed and while they came in first in the election they don't have nearly enough to form a government on their own and every other party has already said they won't enter an coalition with them (while three opposition parties are in an informal alliance and have more than enough to form a government).

I saw an article that suggested that Duda can help PiS stay in power well into December or even early 2024....

I think that PiS and KO voters were largely fixed long ago. Lewica and TD were competing for the same voters and after a fairly weak start TD finished strong, pretty much everyone agrees that Hołownia had the best performance in the reżimowa "debate" so he took some undecided votes from Lewica.
