they always make the hissing "pshhh" sound, like a rattlesnake

Then watch it, Ivan... rattlesnakes are blessed creatures that keep vermin in check and only strike to feed or in self-defense.... leave them alone and they leave you alone... rile them up and you're in for a world of pain.

ancelled by Polish organisers after the derogatory remarks of the group`s leader about the Polish language and Poles

He apologized and claimed it was a joke, parodying the way russians behave overseas.... I haven't seen the clip in question and don't know russian well enough to judge whether I thought he was serious or joking....

Travel / What's next from Chopin's Warsaw? [13]

The title of the thread has only one meaning for me.... Who will be the next Polish musical genius? (roughly)

Once you read the message it's clear they wanted to know how to rent a car at or go somewhere else from the airport...

English is obviously not the poster's first (or maybe not second or third) language.... and I'm wondering how they came to phrase the thread title the way they did.

In this case its the loss of power not ego thing

But anyone joining them would also be making a bunch of lifelong enemies....

I think for almost all the politicians involved the short term financial benefits of joining up with PiS would be outweighed by longterm negative consequences...

playing very hard to get the members from other parties, which shouldnt be hard

Where would they get the money?

No one who voted for any other party wants a PiS government and anyone who agrees to work with them (apart from pro-russia konfa) will see their electorate turn _hard_ against them.

Not saying it won't happen but any such government would probably spark the biggest protests since the abortion law change (maybe bigger).

Another theory is that Duda is taking subtle revenge against PiS, a party that has humiliated him more than once in the past....

when men (and it is usually men) do such crimes

There's a category of mentally ill men known as family destroyers (I've seen other names as well). They kill their spouses and kids and then themselves.... supposedly the reasoning is "I can't go on... and they'll never manage without me... I have to take them with me to prevent them from suffering".

This doesn't seem to be that though as family destroyer's usually wait until the family is together....

There was a similar case earlier in the summer with another soldier in the same program, wasn't there? hmmmmmm

shows him dead

Much better preserved than I would have thought.... good thing it was cold water.... any word on whether he jumped, fell or was pushed?

r a month during which the taxpayers of Poland continue to pay the PiS sinecures

Prying PiS away from the trough (koryto) is not going to be easy...

you losers?

How is PiS going to put a coalition together? Hasn't PiS stabbed every party that tried to work with it in the back? Who wants to work with that? How will it win a confidence vote? It's just delaying tactics....

Duda - according to Miller - wants to replace Jarosław Kaczyński as head of PiS

I'm not going to say that's not true... but there's no way he has the cojones and willpower to keep a fractious political party (the only kind in Poland) together.

Ziobro, as nasty as he is, could because he's ruthless and doesn't care if people hate him. Duda is a people pleaser which is why he failed so much as president.

News / Polish Parliamentary Elections 2023 [933]

Apparently Duda has decided on which side he'll task with forming a government.... the choice is between

PiS = largest single party but doesn't have a majority or a way of achieving a majority since every other party says they will not join a coalition with them and buying off enough members to form a majority is unrealistic....

Opposition coalition (has a majority but the three/four member coalition could be fragile as its united mainly in opposition to PiS (mis)rule.

Who will Duda pick?

Last I heard police had narrowed the search to a very small area and are seriously thinking he's dead....

I need to know more about police talk in Polish and what it really means, for example in the US if police refer to a killing as 'an isolated incident' what it really means is they think they know who did it (usually a family member).

If he's dead the main question would be accident or suicide (I'd go for the latter....).

Ziemkiewicz puts it best

Link? Cause that guy is trippin' balls....

One of the most interesting elements of the election was PiS losing its crypto voters (people who voted for PiS but didn't want to admit to doing so publicly)...

Life / Why Do You Love Poland? [907]

Doctors and Engineers are rarely terrorists.

It's a reference made by a German politician during the arrival of the Merkeljugend in 2015 referring to the arrivals as 'our doctors and engineers in the future'.... meanwhile on planet earth only about 50% of them have had any paid employement.... 8 years later!

reality 1 - idealism - 0

my guess is that they're older and the 6-year-old Aleksander was the youngest

Okay a late 'surprise' kid... sorry I missed the other sons earlier.

the family dog Borys killed was a dachshund...

I don't like dachshunds in general (yappy nasty things) but killing one is too much....

doesn't seem like it had anything to do with his wife in particular

So most likely mental illness (exacerbated by drug use????) 44 is very old for the onset of schizophrenia... so I'm guessing something else.....

Also, while I'm here, 44 minus 6 = 38.... isn't that pretty old for a first time father in Poland? I know things change but... has the onset of having kids increased that much?

Anyhoo, I'm still thinking he's dead or not in Poland.

Is it possible to add the death of the diver to his charges if he is found alive?

UK, Ireland / Is it good for Poland as Sinn Fein will win today in Northen Ireland [282]

Christians abandoned the old festivals and replaced them with the new Christian ones

I'd say rather that Christians renamed old holidays and modified them just enough to pass as Christian in origin.

As I said, no other major religion can assimilate previous religious practices the way Christianity can (nb I'm not a Christian but do admire the faith's versatility and adaptability).

has more to do with a rediscovering of the old native culture

The friend lived there decades ago..... the answer is... in Europe the summer solstice marks the transition from spring to summer which is just not nearly as important the transitions from summer to fall (all saints' day) fall to winter (Christmas/New Years) and winter to spring (Easter).

Bolivia is below the equator so the summer solstice is the beginning of their winter/cold season so it's more important.

the Americans got hold of it and their weird version has spread all over the place

I hear you.... I like American Halloween just fine (favorite holiday as a child) but I can think of no good reason to export it anywhere.... I'm kind of glad that it's never really caught on in Poland.

Similiar to Easter (origin Equinox) and Christmas (origin Winter Solstice)

So... why isn't St John's night (Summer Solstice) as important?

ancient pagan Irish holiday.

Samhain in particular... fall is when the harvest ends and the earth symbolically 'dies'.... it's when animals are slaughtered for the upcoming cold season.... it's natural that it became associated with death.

Christianity simply harnassed those natural ideas and renamed them and directed them toward christian aims...

One of the reasons Christianity is the largest religion on the planet is that it's easily the most adaptable among the major religions.

Neither Islam or Judaism or Buddhism or Hinduism or Confucianism has been able to incoporate other religious traditions as well.

strong heathen undercurrent in the practice of "Christian" celebrations, that's all.

pagan origins... christianity didn't try to stamp out old practices it simply renamed and incorporated them... very healthy

and why is St. John's Night less important than the other three (except in the southern hemisphere)?

have indeed pagan roots, namely Christmas!

Halloween, Christmas and Easter are pagan holidays repainted in Christian colors. Nothing wrong with that.

(I'm not sure about St. Johns.... can you guess why it's less important than the other three?)

I can imagine she's in a bad shape

I'm sure she is, what I meant there's been no mention of their relationship before he snapped.... had things been okay? deteriorating? how had she been reacting to his decline?

Why would your mind jumping to the infidelity?

When a parent kills a child you look at all possible motives... and killings over being cuckolded are not unheard of.... the more common response is losing interest in the child but you never know what a crazy person will do.

It sounds like he'd been seriously unwell for a long time and people ignored it... I fault his superiors in the military for not recognizing his problems earlier and doing something about it.

My first thoughts.... nothing about the mother (very, very weird).

Second thoughts.... I think he's most likely out of the country or dead (suicide).

That's a usual MO for men who kill family members (esp children).

Was it caused by the onset of schizophrenia (he seems a little old for that, but... generally the signs are there)

Was it caused by the discovery of infidelity ("son" wasn't "his")? A disproportionate extreme response but again within the parameters.
