While India and China are upcoming powers and Russia is descending one, they still The US does not need a competitive Europe as their foe but as their junior partner, especially dominated by Russia Europe will be defiantly The US enemy, which would impair greatly American potential to expect its influence and power projection across the globe.
Realistically speaking if Russia was satisfied with its position as a local power and sided with the US, that would be more profitable and logical for Moscow to do it.
However, Russia is obsessive-compulsive anti-American, and regardless of losing greatly to China and having real problems with its relationship with China, they are gambling trying to reduce the US influence in Europe.
That is what the war in Ukraine is about execting influence, power protection, and reducing the US presence in this part of the world. Russia as useful has only the military to achieve it is unable to compete economically or culturally or at any other level with the US.
To sum it up it is in the best interest of the US to see Russian plans fail.

Poland pays its due to NATO.
