Language / Short Polish<->English translations [1040]

'ale laseczki'

laska and the diminutive laseczka is a quite fresh borrowing from the Czech language - 'laska' in Czech means 'love' also a person one loves or has a crush on

at first 'laska' or 'moja laska' meant a girlfriend then it developed a meaning of girl in general and then 'hot girl'

Polish MPs travel for free on nationals connections regardless of what is the reason of their travel - it is the law

By transliteration I mean what it would sound like if it was said literally instead of after translation

what you call transliteration is actually literal translation - transliteration is a completely different thing

History / The Warsaw Uprising memory. To remember who you are. [180]

The poor Polish nation. Freedom fighters through and through.........

how terrible it must feel to be a German to want to denigrate other nations or take their pride from them

UK, Ireland / My bad experiences with Polish neighbours in UK (not meant to offend) [173]

I still want to learn Polish language due to my genetic background.

forget about it - Polish language has a very steep learning curve for beginners - without intensive learning and immersion you will never be able to speak or even properly understand Polish

as for your problems with your Polish neighbours I totally believe you - Poles are definitely no saints - there is much egoism, greed and sexism involved when it comes to Poles especially the uneducated

News / When will Poland take on the EURO? [47]

and the Euro essentially sound.

it's so sound Cental European Bank printed billions of euro just to buy back the outstanding debt of Italy, Spain and Portugal and it suddenly and significantly dropped in value against all major currencies

News / When will Poland take on the EURO? [47]

It's clear that Poland is obliged by their Treaty of Accession to adopt the Euro, so it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when.

the treaty doesn't provide a deadline for Poland and Czech Republic to adopt euro - it can well be in 20 years

News / New European Council's report: "Poland oasis of racism, xenophobia and homophobia" ... [343]

If you really feel that certain Muslims are a danger then you should be praying for them that they will have a change of heart and make peace with their Christian brothers

Nobody - not even God - can change your heart except yourself - no amount of prayer you do will change terrorists - however you can pray for taking these fanatic belligerent souls from the Earth

Nobody - not even God - can change your heart except yourself

actually God can change your heart but not against your will

Language / Why is the Polish language so difficult? [309]

well something along those lines - I have met Mormons in Poland (Americans) and they spoke Polish reasonably well for a duration they had learned the language

Language / Why is the Polish language so difficult? [309]

The Polish word ogonek (the little tail or squiggle beneath the nasal vowels ą and ę)

French and a couple of other languages (Portuguese, Turkish, Romanian) also have ogonki (under consonants in this case) and they were long called the French term cedille

Ingweon

What does ingweon mean? First time I've encountered it.

well Ingveon means sort of West West Germanic - I was actually wrong when I said Plattdeutsch and Dutch are Ingveon - only English and Frisian are - the name presumably comes from the old Germanic god Yngvi

News / Kukiz and Petru - newly emerging political stage in Poland [57]

One thing that I did like about the old PiS regime is the way so many ordinary people mobilised against it in order to vote

young people were manipulated by the pedagogy of shame - now young people see the fruits of the 8 years of PO government and act accordingly

the endemic corruption within PiS

you want examples of corruption in PO - afera hazardowa, afera autostradowa, afera stoczniowa, afera stadionowa, afera taśmowa, afera Ambergold, afera informatyczna, afera gazoportowa

now give me examples of 'endemic' corruption within PiS

why corruption levels have fallen since PiS were kicked out ?

corruption levels haven't fallen, the services which are supposed to fight the corruption turned deaf and blind

Language / Why is the Polish language so difficult? [309]

There you go again - perhaps you didn't notice the post addressed to Pol3 about not playing daft games.

Both extremely easy sentences by the way...

if they were so easy why haven't you translated them???
you failed my test jon

£yżko you have a good memory for languages - you would learn Polish pretty well given sufficient exposure - you already have a good base

Language / Why is the Polish language so difficult? [309]

jon you might have missed my challenge so I repeat it - please translate this following tiny dialogue into Polish to prove your competence in Polish:

- I will tell mum.
- Don't tell her!

News / Kukiz and Petru - newly emerging political stage in Poland [57]

The one which emphasised traditional morality despite the prime minister abandoning his wife for a young woman half his age only for him to be replaced by the (foul-mouthed) president's identical twin.

the situation you describe has happened after Marcinkiewicz was removed from the prime minister post and when he was already a PO supporter

That same regime that almost turned Poland into a laughing stock.

and this was this serious disaster??? have foreign investments fallen because of that? I accept only hard data for the foreign investments claim - btw you are British - what does it matter to you how Poland is perceived by the outside world

The regime that tried to ban Teletubbies and banned wine/beerl from railway dining cars and station buffets

this was this serious disaster? no beer on train buffets? - I thought it must have been a serious thing

Plus numerous other weirdness.

what kind of weidness? was it really disastrous? for whom?

And yes, PiS getting in again (through the back door as they did last time) is a danger

PiS is a danger to whom???

Language / Slavic languages words similarities with Polish [238]

it's not about the difference but similarity - Polish was the first language that the -tio ending of Latin changed into -cja and Russians borrowed the convention (slightly changing the ending to suit their ways of pronounciation)

Language / Why is the Polish language so difficult? [309]

I will say that a. ponalewał sounds uncomfortable - you wouldn't hear that often and b. you wouldn't hear anyone say that sentence much either.

ponalewał is the regular form and is widely used by anyone competent in Polish - the other ways of conveying the same message are highly periphrastic

jon - there is simpler way to tell your competence in Polish just translate a simple dialogue into Polish:
-I will tell mum!
Don't tell mum!
simple - if you get it right I will proclaim you are competent in Polish
