Life / Why do so many Polish strive to be accepted by the West? [78]

You say I'm focusing on the bad sides of communism, what were the good sides?

Now now. Some families lived very well during that time, which explains their anger and rage towards the post-1989 system. I'd mention names, but it's probably a bad idea these days.

I absolutely agree SigSauer, which is why anyone associated with it should be immediately removed from public life, including their children too.

It's drastic, but needed to make sure that it cannot influence public life.

Life / Bilingual kids in Polish schools [30]

I can imagine!

I didn't actually know that Montessori used first names only - it really is much nicer (it's normal in Finnish schools, for instance), but as Maf says, you'd just lose all respect from Polish learners if you did it in an environment where they're not used to it.

With parents, it depends on whether I like them or not ;)

USA, Canada / Shipping personal possessions from US to Poland [11]

It's free of duties, as long as it's shipped within 6 months. If you're shipping it commercially, you can get someone to do the paperwork cheaply to avoid hassle.

Maf, couldn't agree more. What Atch suggests is possible, but it always sounded jarring to my ears. I effectively gave up and stuck to Polish norms because it was the only thing that didn't sound completely annoying.

I think though, in American English, it's acceptable to use the title and first name, isn't it? I seem to remember reading a book where a character was addressed as Miss Katie or something...

Polish children don't call their teacher by first name, hence it shows that "what you've heard" was actually made up for reasons unknown.

History / 75th anniversay of Dr Janusz Korczak's death - a true Polish hero [26]

@kaprys
I have no idea who you are, but that's probably the best post ever on PF.

Korczak is a Polish hero, there's absolutely no other way of putting it. He's still hugely influential in Polish educational circles, and only someone far, far away would fail to understand his influence.

No, it doesn't. You're mixing up rhetoric with reality.

Isn't it interesting how these things are always written with major transference errors, which are characteristic of Russian native speakers and not of Polish native speakers?

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

Many Polish-Americans don't get the welcome in Poland that they think they should get. It's a common story, especially when they start throwing around dollars and expecting people to be impressed.

I'm surprised it's taken you so long to realise that PiS are very much under the Israeli lobby.

News / Dodgy PRL-holdover judiciary finally reformed [420]

You see nothing wrong with judges not being controlled by any democratically elected official?

If politicians can't be trusted to interfere with the judiciary, then it's the best of a bad situation.

What is needed is reform of the court system to ensure that cases are heard in turn, while abandoning the idiotic 'protokol' system.

Is it a surprise to you? Lech Kaczyński had excellent relations with the Jewish community, as does Duda.

As usual, Trump's just being outrageous once again and trying to throw the proverbial monkey wrench into an arena he doesn't, indeed cannot, understand: DIPLOMACY!

He's playing with real fire on this one.

News / Should Poland traitors face the death penalty? [105]

To go back on topic, perhaps someone can comment if Duda should face the death penalty for this:

niezalezna.pl/62267-nieprawidlowosci-podczas-wyborow-w-polsce-wysluchanie-publiczne-w-pe-na-zywo

Why did PiS take the issue of elections in Poland to the EU? Aren't elections an internal Polish matter?

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

Found the newest polls

Nope, it's not the newest poll.

ewybory.eu/sondaz-ibris-04-12-2017 is the latest poll, which confirms that the right wing is losing. If you include parties that won't reach the threshold, then the numbers look worse for the right wing -

Right: 44.2% (PiS+Kukiz'15+Wolność+KNP)
Centre/left: 46.1% (PO, N., SLD, PSL, Razem)

The fact is the majority of poles support right wing pis and kukiz which together have over 50% support

The fact is that you've actually posted outdated data.

As it stands among parties meeting the threshold:

Right: 43.2% (PiS+Kukiz'15)
Centre: 43.7% (PO, N., SLD, PSL)

So, a plurality of Poles support centrist parties according to the latest data.

[moved from]

Leave.

Which won't happen anytime soon.

Just for reference, the latest polls have:

PiS: 36.4%
PO: 20.3%
N.: 10.5%
K'15: 6.8%
SLD: 6.6%
PSL: 6.3%

Broken into a split between 'right' and 'centre', we have:

Right: 43.2% (PiS+Kukiz'15)
Centre: 43.7% (PO, N., SLD, PSL)

Advantage opposition. Even Kukiz himself is now turning against PiS.

I don't think Polish people ought to fear anybody who has trained any Muslim in the world.

So, you think we should allow someone in who has trained Saudis, who adhere to the worst form of radical Islam that there is?

Read this, WP.
newstatesman.com/world-affairs/2014/11/wahhabism-isis-how-saudi-arabia-exported-main-source-global-terrorism

You think that such a person involved with training Wahhabists should be allowed in Poland freely?

Stop telling Polish people and Polish citizen who we should allow and not allow into our society. That is our decision, not yours.

Actually, as a Polish citizen, I've got the right to decide on the same basis as you do. And I vote in every election, even to the Rada Osiedla.

The more NATO people we can get the better

Even if they're potentially working against Polish interests?

Never thought I'd hear you support someone living in Poland who openly admits to training Islamic regimes.

Britain sells weapons to Muslim countries too, so I suppose you'd say that puts them in conflict with Poland? The world is a complicated place.

I'm only repeating what you can read on the Polish internet, nothing more.

I mean, WP, do you like the idea of someone who openly trains Muslims to wage war living in Poland? Be honest now.

Ya glossed right over this part didn't you?

I'm not worried about Polish citizens, they are heavily monitored. I'm concerned about American mercenaries with a track record of training potential enemies to Poland.

Right wing elements in Ukraine are hostile to Poland and Poles, and have already discriminated against Polish people in Ukraine on numerous occasions since 2014.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

You realize Poles love Trump

Naaah. His approval ratings among Poles are low - they had to even bus people into Warsaw to welcome Trump, which has never happened with any previous president.

During the election, only 20% of Poles wanted Trump in the White House over Clinton. Afterwards, only 13% thought that he would be good for Poland.

His attitude towards NATO frightened a lot of Poles, even PiS voters.

Yes, well I'm in Africa now, not the Middle East.

Even more reason for concern.

I think we've established beyond doubt that potential security risks to Poland should be kept well clear of Poland.

So you're involved with training Muslims. That training can be used against Polish people in the future, in accordance with the worst fears of many Polish people at the minute.

You're essentially a threat to Poland, and should be investigated thoroughly. One however, can be satisfied by the fact that any application for residence in Poland will require a detailed background check, which will no doubt reveal the extent of your activities with potentially hostile Muslim forces.

all the work I did, and STILL do with the Ukrainians

Even more of a threat, then. The Polish government is well aware of the activities of right wing Ukrainian forces, and has no desire to admit them into the territory of the RP.
