News / Local elections - anyone care to comment? [75]

"ten Pan" but SLD?? ... questioning election and calling for making them again

They've a lot more in common with PiS than you'd think. Confusion and chaos suit them both - and alleging a fiasco certainly suits them at the moment.

in some areas a vote had already been cast by means of a cross or tick BEFORE the ballot paper was handed to the legitimate constituent to vote with?

I'd say it's very hard to believe. Voting fraud does exist in Poland, at least at a low level (a few years ago a Sołtys was found to have 42 people registered as living in his 3 bedroom house) but essentially things are done correctly in PL and something like that would have come up immediately, loudly and under media scrutiny.

Certain political tendencies like nothing more making than wild allegations, the wilder the better. Paradoxically, they are the ones most likely to get up to something dodgy.

People voted already and their votes could be counted - even manually.

This would be normal in most places - in PL, people love a procedural scandal.

No need for new election. Any complains as for the results/procedure etc can be dealt by court locally as it was done in previous elections.

Exactly, however PiS are so vexatious they'll try anything...

Work / Is it going to be hard for me to find a part time Job in Warsaw? [25]

Will CELTA (from british council nepal ) course help me to find part time job/work in poland ?

Possibly, however as a non-native and without experience, you'd be restricted to the bottom end of the market, where there is currently an oversupply of people all chasing the same thing.

She could be deported for that.

Yes - such a shame. I miss the buskers and colourful ads. The Warsaw Metro has such a sombre and over-serious atmosphere.

At least the second line opens next month.

Since when has the constitution stopped them calling for things? During their brief time in office they even wanted to scrap it and replace it with one of their own...

Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

Lol thx god charging 2 pln for toilets fashion is gone

A few still do that, even in Warsaw - sometimes having the key behind the bar!

Hopefully it's changed now, but the cafe on Kielce Station used to charge extra for sugar in your coffee...

Law / Old Polish money banknotes - what's their value today? [415]

No. Curiosity value only unless there's something else special about it (and that is unlikely) - that note was from when they had hyperinflation. Have a look earlier in this thread.

Travel / Cheapest Way from Warsaw to Chopin Airport ? [15]

Problem is that it uses two different train stations and two operators...confusing for foreigners arriving in the city.

That's why I wouldn't recommend it.

There is also (for them who live in the south of the city) bus 148 from Metro Imielin.

I've used that. A visitor may well be wandering around that road junction looking for the right stop though.

Mind you, a taxi from the station should be about 50zl tops.

That's still pretty good, and goes straight there and stops just by departures.

There's also the 188 from Metro Politechnika which also goes door to door.

Travel / Cheapest Way from Warsaw to Chopin Airport ? [15]

is there also a dedicated airport bus to Chopin Airport ?

That's the 175 - it does stop on the way, but goes the quickest route to the airport.

Travel / Cheapest Way from Warsaw to Chopin Airport ? [15]

The 175 bus which stops just outside the front of the station (the main road - you will be standing on the pavement by a very busy road, not the quieter bit at the back with lots of buses). You'll need to buy a ticket from one of the ticket machines by the bus stop and stamp it when you get on. There are also trains for the same price however I would recommend the bus which is much more frequent (several times an hour, every few minutes at busy times).

They were so stupid to install a new computer program six months before the elections. That's asking for guaranteed trouble.

Quite. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that they'd never even run a simulation.

There look to be some interesting run-offs coming up too - it will be interesting how that pans out.

About PKW, this is a question of plain incompetence, nothing more. They were so stupid to install a new computer program six months before the elections. That's asking for guaranteed trouble.

And according to today's newspapers they were hacked as well...

If you see the results in Warsaw, it is clear that in quite a few districts local committees are getting a lot of votes, which I think is really great. They know the local issues and problems.

This is good news, as is PSL doing well.

the results of the local elections:

Rare that a party in office does well in local elections after so long.

PiS chairman Jarosław Kaczyński said that if it were not for the so-called "Madrid affair", the election result of PiS would have been even better.

Some of Macierewicz's antics could also be off-putting.

But I am glad that Adam Hoffman would no longer be preaching his tirades on TVN about how bad his political opponents are

Too much negative campaigning and 'obozy'. A bit of unity and positivity would be good from any party.

My guess is that the less privileged or less prosperous areas have the greatest number of PiS votes in them

According to surveys, they're smaller towns, less well educated, less affluent, older demographic with some exceptions - they have something of a power base round Krakow.

Work / How much is the average living cost in Poland for foreign student? [46]

Yes, I did see that. I was thinking more about going away for the weekend or longer, visits back to wherever she's from - these things can get very expensive. Cheap mini break is very possible, but a comfortable one is better. I've done both and know which I prefer.

So to answer her question about whether it's enough to live on, then yes, just about. Is it enough to live well? No, unless you want to live in a city with great restaurants and bars but not be able to go in them if you also want to fly back to see your family or take a short holiday and if you don't mind night buses instead of taxis.

If she doesn't mind living like a student, it's possible, but still not comfortable.

1000 zl not much for food? For one person?

Looking at it, it's actually about 760 zl a month, say 750 for maths' sake. Meaning 187 zl a week to buy not just food but anything else that you need to spend on day to day, a little something for unforeseen expenditures, entertainment, clothing, mobile phone top-up, hairdresser, toiletries and cosmetics, ladies' products etc (assuming Niki is a lady).

As I say, possible, but barely so and only with a bit of skill. Forget the weekends away.

Work / How much is the average living cost in Poland for foreign student? [46]

I can easily cook a dinner for 3 for 20 zl

So can I - in fact for much less, but I wouldn't want to do that daily or even often.

for food

And for all the rest, plus travel, any clothes that she wants/needs to buy, a decent restaurant every now and again, or in fact anything else.

The poster doesn't say she's a student. If she is, she may well be happy living like one. If not, she may well want a bit more comfort.

Work / Part time work / Web Developer job in Poland [8]

Or some other way is there to achieve the Work permit.

The employer and nobody else can apply for a work permit.

There is no demand for PHP developers in Poland that local supply cannot fulfill.

This is true.

Life / Vandalism in Poland: Has it always been this way? [80]

nor cleaning cities from advertisement chaos is.

It isn't so much the city centre (where after all you expect ads) but in the countryside, in otherwise pretty villages and in the suburbs.

cleaning graffities. In Poland it doesn't seem to big a priority

Paradoxically the penalties are very severe. One thing that's always puzzled me - there's so much graffiti, new stuff appears all the time but I've never seen anyone actually spraying it.

Poland is a very safe place to be overall

Yes - no more vandalism of the type that the OP mentioned than most other places in that part of Europe. The level of graffiti is shocking though and neither nothing new nor getting any better. Cameras don't seem to be stopping it.
