Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

You can get it out of the safe in a few seconds.

Not really. Not if it's stored properly. I'm surrounded by AK47s here and there's a reason why they carry them rather than store them all the time.

Unless you are a gangster you will never need to defend yourself, even in the USA the number of domestic incidents requiring legitimate use of a fire arm is small,

Spot on.

But I suspect the real reason most men would like to carry is cock waving rights. Look at me I'm a hard man.

That's (excuse the pun) a big part of it.

Yes but if one doesn't want to hunt or belongs to their stupid association and paying fees and still want to own a gun is pretty much screwed.

If people were allowed to do that, there'd be feckwits firing guns too near public roads, shooting whatever species they like in whatever season they like. Most developed countries regulate hunting.

Even If one does, hunting weapon is not really good for self protection... anyway It needs to be kept locked at home for most time and can be carried out only If one goes hunting...

Yes. The days of farmers keeping their shotgun next to the kitchen door are long gone.

History / Terrible past for the Jews in Poland? [930]

Even more amusingly, googling 'bransk jews gentiles live center permission' gives this thread as the top two results!

Exactly. Vexatious trolling by somebody with a very, very unhealthy obsession.

Yeah, duh, this is a Polish city,

Evidently not, if someone else was controlling who can live there.

Not that the story's true, anyway.

Love / Are Polish girls open to foreigners? [78]

their own women.

"their" women?

It's up to an individual who they want to have a romance with. Women are not property.

It certainly isn't a reason to seal the borders. Anyway, what's with the 'sex-tourist' bit? Aren't people allowed to have a holiday romance?

Travel / Why most taxis in Warsaw cheat foreigners to get more money? [38]

Just to share a strange experience from last night.

Myself and two friends got in a taxi on Nowy Świat. It was from ELE taxi which I've used for years without problems. The driver started fiddling with a meter that didn't look quite right but I didn't read anything into that at first. As soon as he started driving, he offered to take us to a brothel which is bad enough in itself. Then I noticed the crazy rate that the 'meter' was running at and the fact that it had no tariff number on. nor was it connected to anything. By this time we were at the start of Miodowa. Obviously I asked him to stop immediately, told him why and didn't pay anything. I also took his taxi ID card as I left and dropped it down the nearest drain. The last thing I saw as we drove off in an honest taxi was him trying to fish it out.

The whole thing was quite bizarre - my friends were sure he was behaving like that because he heard a foreign accent, but he must have been pretty stupid if he thought that someone who speaks perfect Polish and asks to go to a residential address rather than, say, a hotel would fall for the same sort of trick as a visitor. I also wonder if he thought the two people with me would go along with his scam for whatever reason.

Talking to a friend today who's a reputable driver with the same firm, I found out that the ELE company's so large and the turnover of staff so high that they can't really keep track of the people who work for them and sometimes have to employ out-of-towners who the other drivers don't consider trustworthy. This guy's accent was pure Podlasie. Another strange thing is that the amount on his window sticker was suspiciously low.

A shame really, since one bad egg even if spectacularly incompetent, spoils the reputation of all Warsaw drivers.

Many of them have w*nked for many years to white women in prn movies

So what?

And for some of them, nothing beats the joy of walking with a beautiful white girl and getting jealous looks from white men who were stupid enough to vote for parties granting all those non-European marriage/sex seekers access to their country

Or maybe 'some of them' are actually in love.

What a cynical post,

News / Predictions about Poland for 2013 [85]

The pound is getting weaker which helps nothing, same withthe triple-dip recession. The loss of consumer confidence in cheap processed foods won't help PL either since they're a major exporter, but that may be balanced by increasing food scarcity that I gather has been widely predicted over the next year or so.

There is already shale gas activity which will have an effect - most of the jobs so far and the better paid ones in the near future won't particularly benefit Poles - they'll go to people who already have experience in shale gas extraction, but there'll certainly be work in the support sector.

History / Churchill and Poland [120]

I hoped that one could see I wasnt trying to have a bash at Britain or the things the British went through.

Certainly.

At that time they had long been debating how to get rid of the Empire - it's true though that there was nothing at all Churchill could have done to change the way it turned out.

It's ally, no Allie, Allie is some chap from Edinburgh.

You know him too?

History / Churchill and Poland [120]

No, my bitterness is for Stalin and the people who support him and talk crap. Stalin was one of the most evil men in History, he was Poland's torturer!

This is very true

Are you even Polish? Why are you here? Member for under 1 year?

Why are you here on an English language forum? Member, by the way, pretty well since it started.

"The concept is by no means universally accepted."

It is not generally accepted at all except for people with either an axe to grind, a skewed interpretation of history or more usually both.

dunkirque

You mean Dunkirk, in English.

the war was largely fought somewhere else

It was fought in every home which has a son, husband, brother or father conscripted into the army and in every air raid shelter during the blitz.

All that blather entirely disproves your 'point'. Churchill was outnumbered in Yalta - your bitterness should be in the direction of the USA, who refused to support Churchill over Stalin.

A completely random snap from a Polish wedding album from Poland:

Less artistic, but at least we know that communism brought pleasure to some of the people in PL

But why 'turystyczny'?

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1090]

is your culture

One of the richest in the world - though people acknowlege that it is impossible to classify - as I would say Polish culture is.
