News / What should Poland do with the problem of Belarus? [1800]

When buildings were constructed, problems was mostly with horse manure on roads, not with traffic jams.

The same could be said of many big cities, but ambulances still manage to get through. The concept of 'yield' simply does not exist in some cultures and Russia is one of them. Equally, if you'd had a government that was of any use at any point in the last fifty years, you'd have dealt with the problem of emergency vehicles not being able to get to emergencies.

there is a lot of belorussians I talked with, both in Moscow and in Belarus.

But the fact that they are part of your social circle means that they are likely to have similar views to your own and those who don't share your views are probably afraid to open their mouths in case they meet a similar fate to so many before them.

For that to believe I really would need to see proof...

The problem is that anything can be faked. It's very easy to produce false documents, evidence etc. Intelligence forces have been doing that for decades, long before the technology that we now have which makes it even easier.

people's indifference

Is probably closely related to living in the socially engineered society crafted by Uncle Joe and his descendants of whom I would count Putin as one. The kind of rubbish spouted by Velund and his ilk is directly responsible for creating the kind of society where human life has no value and people don't give way to ambulances.

Btw it has been confirmed by ProtonMail that the alleged bomb threat was sent AFTER the plane had already been diverted to Minsk.

EADaily recalls that a photo of Protasevich in full Azov uniform

You really are a bit of a simpleton, aren't you? A photo of somebody bearing a vague resemblance to Protasevich - oh and you do realize don't you that people often say anything they're told to when they're in fear of their lives, or trying to protect others. Surely you've read Soviet history.

Work / Family of four considering a move to Poland from USA [31]

well established and diverse throughout Europe

There are quite a lot of foreign owned companies in Poland that are not as good to work for as you might imagine because the Polish offices are managed by locals and they have their own way of doing things. However, it's a bit of a lottery and it could suit you quite well.

Polish & Slavic Federal Credit Union here in America could act as some kind of notary

If the bank wants a USA credit history from you they may specify which agency it should be from. There is no harm in having a bank reference or credit reference but as another poster mentioned, it won't carry that much weight. Things are different in Poland. The bank is not that interested in your past, they care about your present. How much are you earning, what kind of employment contract do you have, what are your outgoings, any other loans to service. The only thing they want to be sure of is that you're not currently wanted for an unpaid debt. Otherwise, they're really not impressed with a faultless credit history, a good record of saving etc. It won't influence their decision to grant you a mortgage.

I don't know how it works in the USA, but you should also know that although you can have a meeting to discuss your requirements and get a 'yes we would give you a mortgage' in theory, you can't actually apply for one until you find a property you want. In Ireland, where I'm from you apply and get approval for a certain amount, then when you find a house you draw down the mortgage. In Poland you have to wait until you find a house and then you apply for a mortgage for that particular property. It takes about six weeks to process the application. Oh and the mortgage has to be joint with your wife unless you sign a 'separation of property' agreement. That means you will be making all your financial affairs separate, not just the ownership of the house.

Poland is a very different kettle of fish legally to the USA because your laws mostly originate with the English Common Law system (and a bit of constitutional law) while Poland has the Roman law system, more common on the continent and a complete pain in the nether portions, in my opinion. But that's a discussion for another day!

Work / Family of four considering a move to Poland from USA [31]

they didn't care that I had a perfect credit score in USA.

It's true that Polish banks don't 'officially' take your USA credit history into account, but I'm sure that they prefer to see someone with a good credit history rather than a bad one. It can't hurt anyway.

I could potentially base myself out of my wife's home in Poland

Living with the in-laws? Be afraid, be very afraid!!

Btw, another thing to be aware of with Polish companies is that they have a very mixed reputation as employers and many of them don't do automatic salary reviews eg after the first year of employment. If you want a pay rise, you frequently have to demand it. It will rarely be offered as a matter of course. You won't necessarily get one either.

I'm wondering if its possible for a lendor in Poland to take into consideration credit history in America.

You will need a credit report issued by an approved agency, which varies according to your country of origin so the banks will certainly be pleased to see that you have a good credit record . This is a really useful site, written in English. The guy is a mortgage broker so he's available for consultation if you feel you need customized advice but there's plenty of material there to give you a good overview.

in case they want to negotiate down.

They will.

12,000 per month will give you take-home pay of around 8,500 zl per month. If you want to calculate some rough living costs, this site is pretty accurate.

numbeo.com/cost-of-living/country_result.jsp?country=Poland

it has become nearly impossible to get on the housing ladder here.

If you want to get a mortgage you'll need between 10 and 20% of the purchase price depending on the bank. Most banks will want you to have six momths employment history and at least six months remaining to run on your current employment contract, but ideally they prefer an 'indefinite' contract which is the equivalnent of a permanent job.

Your prospective employer will probably want you to do a three month probationary period. It's quite usual and it won't count towards your employment history so you can start to apply for mortgages within nine months of starting that job.

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [940]

my answers

Agree with them all.

I took a quick look at the test and I thought the suggested headlines sounded as if they were written by a non-native speaker.

'Fisherman falls victim to a shark attack' should be 'Fisherman falls victim to shark attack'. Headlines frequently omit articles.

'Boat owner alarms police about a huge shark' is completely wrong. You notify the police, or raise the alarm. You could have, 'Boat owner alerts police to presence of huge shark.' If he alarms the police, it means he frightens them. In that case you could say 'Police alarmed by boat owner's sighting of huge shark.' or something similar.

Law / Advice needed on access rights and alimony payments regarding my Polish daughter [28]

move to poland to see my daughter

Regardless of the visa/residency complications, you should only consider moving to Poland if you can find a job there first or you have a lot of money and can support yourself for a while until you can earn a living. There is virtually no social welfare system in Poland, not compared to the UK and you could literally end up living on the street unless you have a few thousand zloty a month to pay rent and bills and buy food. You will also have to pay child support and the courts here don't accept 'I have no job, sorry I can't pay'.

The other problem is that even if you succeed in moving to Poland your ex may not allow you to see your child. It's quite common for Polish mothers to prevent the father from having contact with the child, once the relationship breaks up, even if there is a court order that the father has access rights. It takes time, perseverance and a lot of money to get it enforced.

The best option for you is to try and stay on good terms with the mother and come to Poland for a visit, not to live permanently and make sure that you keep records of any money you send for your child's support. Never give cash, always make sure that it's a bank transfer made out to your ex, and reference it in the transfer title as a child support payment.

Food / How is this herring product typically served? [74]

British English uses greasy in the very context I meant.

You're a typical Pole, telling a native speaker that they're wrong :)) I'm not using 'Irish' English.

The Oxford Dictionary defines grease as 'Animal fat used or produced in cooking.' Oil on the other hand is defined as 'Any of various viscous liquids which are insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents and are obtained from animals or plants.'

Native English speakers often make subtle distinctions in their use of words that may have a broadly similar meaning.

Who wrote the text book? Greasy is not a taste; it's a texture and nobody chooses greasy food. The word greasy has negative connotations in everyday English usage. People may enjoy oily foods. Indeed 'oily fish' is a term used for certain categories of fish such as sardines or mackerel but greasy fish would mean fried fish that has been cooked in too much fat and is soggy and revolting :))

crush mackerel, add butter, chives and parsley leaves

That sounds like a nice one for summer. I think I'd add fresh cucumber instead of the kiszone. I know it would give it a different taste but I think it would be nice and 'summery' ;)

you must be a deft cook then

I must confess I'm quite a good cook! And I've learned to make a lot of Polish dishes. Most Polish recipes are pretty straightforward but they tend to be very labour intensive. They're typical, good 'rustic' dishes that use only a few ingredients but really make the most of those few things. I also make Russian dishes. They're interesting because they're similar to Polish but with a bit of a twist. You know the way the base of many Polish soups is the włoszczyzna (leek, celeriac, parsnip, carrot) but with Russian soups it's celery stalks, grated carrot, onion, garlic. Another thing about Polish recipes is the omnipresent ziele angielskie ;) I like it but it's quite a distinctive taste and can end up making dishes taste very similar to each other. The Rooskies don't seem to use it but they go heavy on the sour cream and they quite like adding tomato puree too.

I'm going to try a new fish recipe this weekend. It's an old English thing called kedgeree, from their Indian empire days. I think it would appeal to the Polish palate. It uses smoked haddock but that's hard to get in Poland so any smoked fish would do.

I also like paprykasz. It's very easy to make and much nicer if you make it yourself at home. It's very economical too because you can make one quite small mackerel last for a few days! It's yummy eaten warm - you can spread it on bread, pop a fried egg on top and there's your dinner :)

No :) I find them too salty even after soaking for 24 hours but I enjoy preparing them and knowing that other people will enjoy them :) I like smoked fish so when Mr Atch has his fishy treats I have a nice bit of makrela wędzona or similar. He likes szprot wędzony but I really don't like the feeling of crunching through all those bones and their little heads still being attached - yikes! I like whole fish if it's larger, trout, for example. I don't seem to mind the sight of the head then.

Wow, it never occured to me.

My husband eats matjas with bread but śledź w wodzie with potatoes.

they are greasy

Oily would be a better choice of adjective. Herring comes under the heading of 'oily fish' in English, whereas greasy is associated with animal fat. Grease is solid fat. Describing a food as greasy indicates that it's unpleasantly fatty with excess grease.

Classifieds / Ordering from Allergro.pl [12]

@Homiker
You've got to be careful with Allegro because it's a mixture of private and trade sellers. Avoid the private ones, only deal with trade and look for the ones with a long history of sales / good reputation. Some of them have a cash on delivery option for payment which is ideal. You can still get burned though. Somebody I know recently bought a laptop from a well established trade seller, which was supposedly new and turned out to be reconditioned. It arrived in a Lenovo box which had all the information on it in English which is the only way he knew it was not new. It was a factory recall which had had a faulty hard drive replaced. Anybody who didn't speak English would never have realised. So, Allegro can be dodgy. Sorry you didn't get your DVDs :(

You need to register with Allegro and log in. Then on the product listing somewhere on the right hand side you should see 'Pytanie do sprzedającego' which is 'questions for the seller'. You can contact them there. You can message me if you like but what we're talking about here could be useful to somebody else in the future :)

You can try. Use Google Translate to help you. If you don't understand something copy and paste it into Google Translate and if you want to write to them, compose your message in GT and just copy and paste into your email. Try not to use the word 'you' eg can you tell me, etc as the Polish language has two forms for that word, formal and informal. Google can't cope with the formal, it will give you the informal and it's very rude in Poland to address a stranger informally. So try to find a different way of saying what you want to say. For example, you could say 'Is the DVD set still available. If so I would like to buy it. Please send details of what to do.' And end your email with 'Pozdrawiam'. It's like 'regards'.

Didn't you say before that your hair was thinning a bit? If it is, then I'm not sure bleaching it is a good idea. But no, you actually look less Polish than you did before and more like an aging member of Hitler Youth :)) Seriously though you look more German or Dutch than Polish.

Love / Polish women: what do you think of Polish men? Physically unattractive? [180]

I can honestly say that I have never seen an attractive or good looking Polish or Russian man in my life.

That really is utter nonsense. Russians on the whole, both men and women are much better looking than Poles and the three Polish types you mention certainly do exist but there are exceptions, and plenty of them.

there was even something more about him beyond his looks, which is even more rare.

You should have kept him under surveillance and engineered some more opportunities for accidentally bumping into him ;) God be with the days when you could drop your hankie on the pavement :)) though apparently, men were wise to that one and it would have categorized you as an outrageous slut :)) Of course, a few of the men on this forum still think that way, though I doubt that any of them are in danger of being targeted by hankie-dropping females.

Food / Polish Salted Butter [57]

too many foods contain too much salt

I'm glad to hear that you've discovered the dangers of salt. It is quite literally a killer. You should try not to take more than 6g per day. You should watch your children's diet too. Research shows that even young children who have a salty diet, have elevated blood pressure for their ages. You'll struggle a bit Paw, because you like many of the traditional Polish dishes which are heavy on the salt and fat. However, it's worth it. It does mean though that you'll pretty much have to cut out the wędliny, sausages, and even the smoked fish in large quantities. At least you prepare quite a lot of your own which means you can control the amount of added salt.

Butter is actually not too bad as Jon says. The amount of salt added to Kerrygold for example is 1.8g per 100g but you don't use that much butter on bread or even on spuds or whatever. If you use it once a day on your toast you'd be ok and good quality butter like the Irish stuff has lots of nutrients and vitamins which are beneficial unlike things like ketchup which are loaded with salt but have no benefits at all.

You can counteract the effects of salt with certain foods. Beetroot is great because it's loaded with potassium which lowers the blood pressure. Fresh beetroot juice every day, or fermented beetroot juice are both ideal. Of course the stuff in the shops has added salt! So make your own. Also extract of olive capsules, 1000mg per day has been shown to lower blood pressure by up to 10 points. You can use it alongside regular blood pressure meds and it helps to keep the dosage of the meds lower. They use it in hospitals in Australia for treatment of blood pressure patients as it's so effective.

I dismissed, dumped, and released from duty all the other butters in the world,

You can't possibly have tasted all of them :)

Btw SEO means search engine optimization, nothing to do with 'executive orders'.

It does not match the butter preferences of an average American.

I don't think the average American knows much about good quality food and in particular dairy produce. I can tell from your English that you're not a native speaker so I assume you have the misfortune to live in the USA through choice rather than having the bad luck of being born there :)) American farming methods are diabastrous as we'd say in Dublin (that's Dublin, Ireland btw, not Dublin, Ohio or wherever it is in the USA).

the Azores gets more sunshine than Ireland (

I wonder how much sunshine actually affects the quality of pasture though. Ironically it's the combination of damp and mild temperatures that make Irish pasture so nutritious.

I'm always telling everyone how great the Irish are and now you can see I was right :)) We'd never boil our enemies!
