Travel / Had the most unwelcoming experience in all my travels in Poland, very unfriendly people. [115]

People werent aggresive on the road i suppose they easily notice the yellow dutch plate and take that into account with my slower driving style.

Ok, that proves it beyond doubt. Definitely a troll! Thoughtful, considerate Polish drivers noticing your foreign plates and tip-toeing through the tulips around you. That's a lol moment!

The rest of Poland was actually quite lovely people were kind and respectfull

That's a very different story to the one you told in your first post.

not a single polish person told me hey welcome to poland

It now seems that contrary to what you said originally, you had a wonderful holiday in Poland except for a single incident in one town, for which you are at least 50% responsible due to your own behaviour. Poles generally don't like unconventional/non-conformist behaviour. Eccentricity doesn't go down well with them and sitting in a tub, in a shared bathroom for two hours in the middle of the day counts as weird, not to mention rude and selfish - and do bear in mind that the people here who initially pointed that out to you are not even Polish.

I noticed the bad behaviour was mostly around the Gdansk area

So tell us about the rest of your holiday then. And pray, do tell, about how the driving experience compares to the Netherlands.

He isn`t American. He lives in Cuba or Mongolia

He certainly isn't American nor does he live there - nor indeed Cuba or Mongolia.

I was on the phone calling some people, just chilling i drove hundreds of kilometers the previous day.

In that case, most normal people would snuggle down under the duvet, especially on a wet day, and make their phone calls from the comfort of bed - not sit in a tub of water for two hours.

Very unwelcoming rude people.

Ironically, most of the people who responded to your post aren't even Polish.

Just put hot water in the bath? To keep it warm

Don't be ridiculous. What sort of a nutter sits for two hours in a bathtub, continuously letting the water out and topping it up again. Still I suppose Dutchmen are known for smoking a lot of the old Mary Jane.

I found the Poles unfailingly polite,

Steady on now! That's stretching it a bit :)) They can be quite brusque to downright rude, but no more so than many other nationalities. Equally they can be very pleasant. Actually, I find the older generation 50+ often have better manners and social skills than the younger ones.

They are not bad at all,a myth

They're atrocious. Not a myth, a fact backed up by stats. Most dangerous roads in the EU. They have an appalling record for road deaths per 100,000 people.

Also some ahole scratched my car

So you travelled to Poland by car? I'm surprised you didn't mention your driving experiences in Poland ..........

I was just chilling in the bathtub on a rainy day

Are you sure you don't mean chilly? Two hours in a bath - the water would be stone cold and you'd be shrivelled up like a prune. I don't know of any sane person who'd spend their holidays wallowing in a tub of cold water.

what else was i supposed to do?

What about visiting some sort of indoor attraction? Or if you're a bit of pleb (look that one up in your English dictionary), you could just go to a shopping centre and gaze in wonder at the shops, topped off with sitting somewhere having a coffee and watching the world go by.

Study / Studying Medicine in Poland with weak Polish? I speak native Slavic language - Macedonian [10]

Considering medicine uses Latin terms

Not in Poland it doesn't. At least there may be some terms derived from Latin but not all by any means. One of the class examples is the term 'angina'. In English 'angina' is a heart condition, 'angina pectoris' is the full name, it basically translates as chest pain. In Polish 'angina' is the common cold and is pronounced 'angeena'.

Realistically you can't expect to study anything at third level with weak command of a language.

Law / What happens if you don't pay alimony? [4]

In Usa there are legal ways to avoid it

Not in Poland there aren't, so why bother mentioning the USA? Even if he leaves Poland and lives elsewhere he is still liable for the payment of child support under Polish law.

@Saffalack, if an order for 'alimenty' has been made by the courts, you need to pay it. If you disagree with the amount, you can bring a case and appeal it but keep paying in the meantime or you will not be well received by any judge if you DO lodge an appeal - and you will have bailiffs (komornik) on your back at some point. If there is no order for support and your wife is simply expecting you to pay something, she has every right to expect that of you, both morally and under the law. However, if she is being greedy about the amount, then simply give her a figure you feel is affordable for you and fair to the child. Make sure that you have some proof of payment. Give her the money via bank transfer each time and use the reference 'child support' so that you can produce it in court as proof that you are meeting your responsibilities.

Law / How do I verify a Polish company's existence? [249]

They certainly exist though people don't seem to enjoy working for them much. But yes, they are an actual company.

gowork.pl/opinie_czytaj,837393

They seem to have been around quite a long time, since at least 2008.

If you want to do business with Poland you'll need to learn how to use Google and Google Translate effectively. You won't always be able to find quick answers on forums and although a certain amount of information is available in English, you'll find out a lot more if you use Polish.

I can be a woman by noon.

Whip on a frock and a bit of lipstick and Bob's your uncle - or in this case Fanny's your aunt. After all if it was good enough for old J Edgar it'll do for you. My heart rejoices for you, Lady-Man.

tyrants, oppressors, and dictators

Tell me now Novi, me old china, - bit of Cockney lingo for you this time, I run the full linguistic gamut - who are these tyrants et al who are attacking Lukashenko?

names of the dead oppressed,

Why are you pretending to be interested in their names? If you wanted to know them, they're widely published in all mainstream news sources.

that's why you can't claim it was the government agents.

Steady on there me old fruit - I didn't claim that. I just said it was a possibility. It's equally possible it was just a bunch of random murdering scum.

Thousands are murdered in the US every year. Does it mean it's by the US government?

Well, one might suggest that successive governments bear some responsibility for the mess we call the USA. It's interesting though that coming as you do from a seriously compromised and failed society, you don't see anything that appalling or unnatural about a crime of such violence being perpetrated as a result of a minor confrontation.

you don't see them moving to Belarus to join the protesters, do you?

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that your stupidity is an affectation.

Belarussian authorities didn't murder him.

How do we know that? We don't know the identities of the men who beat the unfortunate guy to death. Anyway let's wait and see if the Belarussian authorities track them down and prosecute them - but then of course they could just put anyone on a show trial, it doesn't have to be the guys who actually did it. Or indeed the guys who might have been paid by the authorities to do it as a 'nixer' (bit of Dublin slang for you there) may be the ones 'on trial.'

They created "an atmosphere".

Yes, governments are very good at doing that, either benevolent or malevolent.

And all this people was fed to predators in Minsk zoo?

Why not? During the Spanish civil war, people were fed to the lions and I know that to be a fact.

they send their least intelligent trolls here?

Actually, he's probably one of their seniors ;) The really clever ones masquerade as complete eejits :))

It's extraordinary though isn't it, to think that people would be making light of what's going on in Belarus. You notice that people who defend such regimes usually do so from the freedom, comfort and safety of the democracies they supposedly despise - you don't see them moving to Belarus, do you?

When buildings were constructed, problems was mostly with horse manure on roads, not with traffic jams.

The same could be said of many big cities, but ambulances still manage to get through. The concept of 'yield' simply does not exist in some cultures and Russia is one of them. Equally, if you'd had a government that was of any use at any point in the last fifty years, you'd have dealt with the problem of emergency vehicles not being able to get to emergencies.

there is a lot of belorussians I talked with, both in Moscow and in Belarus.

But the fact that they are part of your social circle means that they are likely to have similar views to your own and those who don't share your views are probably afraid to open their mouths in case they meet a similar fate to so many before them.

For that to believe I really would need to see proof...

The problem is that anything can be faked. It's very easy to produce false documents, evidence etc. Intelligence forces have been doing that for decades, long before the technology that we now have which makes it even easier.

people's indifference

Is probably closely related to living in the socially engineered society crafted by Uncle Joe and his descendants of whom I would count Putin as one. The kind of rubbish spouted by Velund and his ilk is directly responsible for creating the kind of society where human life has no value and people don't give way to ambulances.

Btw it has been confirmed by ProtonMail that the alleged bomb threat was sent AFTER the plane had already been diverted to Minsk.

You really are a bit of a simpleton, aren't you? A photo of somebody bearing a vague resemblance to Protasevich - oh and you do realize don't you that people often say anything they're told to when they're in fear of their lives, or trying to protect others. Surely you've read Soviet history.

Work / Family of four considering a move to Poland from USA [31]

well established and diverse throughout Europe

There are quite a lot of foreign owned companies in Poland that are not as good to work for as you might imagine because the Polish offices are managed by locals and they have their own way of doing things. However, it's a bit of a lottery and it could suit you quite well.

Polish & Slavic Federal Credit Union here in America could act as some kind of notary

If the bank wants a USA credit history from you they may specify which agency it should be from. There is no harm in having a bank reference or credit reference but as another poster mentioned, it won't carry that much weight. Things are different in Poland. The bank is not that interested in your past, they care about your present. How much are you earning, what kind of employment contract do you have, what are your outgoings, any other loans to service. The only thing they want to be sure of is that you're not currently wanted for an unpaid debt. Otherwise, they're really not impressed with a faultless credit history, a good record of saving etc. It won't influence their decision to grant you a mortgage.

I don't know how it works in the USA, but you should also know that although you can have a meeting to discuss your requirements and get a 'yes we would give you a mortgage' in theory, you can't actually apply for one until you find a property you want. In Ireland, where I'm from you apply and get approval for a certain amount, then when you find a house you draw down the mortgage. In Poland you have to wait until you find a house and then you apply for a mortgage for that particular property. It takes about six weeks to process the application. Oh and the mortgage has to be joint with your wife unless you sign a 'separation of property' agreement. That means you will be making all your financial affairs separate, not just the ownership of the house.

Poland is a very different kettle of fish legally to the USA because your laws mostly originate with the English Common Law system (and a bit of constitutional law) while Poland has the Roman law system, more common on the continent and a complete pain in the nether portions, in my opinion. But that's a discussion for another day!

Work / Family of four considering a move to Poland from USA [31]

they didn't care that I had a perfect credit score in USA.

It's true that Polish banks don't 'officially' take your USA credit history into account, but I'm sure that they prefer to see someone with a good credit history rather than a bad one. It can't hurt anyway.

I could potentially base myself out of my wife's home in Poland

Living with the in-laws? Be afraid, be very afraid!!

Btw, another thing to be aware of with Polish companies is that they have a very mixed reputation as employers and many of them don't do automatic salary reviews eg after the first year of employment. If you want a pay rise, you frequently have to demand it. It will rarely be offered as a matter of course. You won't necessarily get one either.

Work / Family of four considering a move to Poland from USA [31]

I'm wondering if its possible for a lendor in Poland to take into consideration credit history in America.

You will need a credit report issued by an approved agency, which varies according to your country of origin so the banks will certainly be pleased to see that you have a good credit record . This is a really useful site, written in English. The guy is a mortgage broker so he's available for consultation if you feel you need customized advice but there's plenty of material there to give you a good overview.

Work / Family of four considering a move to Poland from USA [31]

in case they want to negotiate down.

They will.

12,000 per month will give you take-home pay of around 8,500 zl per month. If you want to calculate some rough living costs, this site is pretty accurate.

numbeo.com/cost-of-living/country_result.jsp?country=Poland

it has become nearly impossible to get on the housing ladder here.

If you want to get a mortgage you'll need between 10 and 20% of the purchase price depending on the bank. Most banks will want you to have six momths employment history and at least six months remaining to run on your current employment contract, but ideally they prefer an 'indefinite' contract which is the equivalnent of a permanent job.

Your prospective employer will probably want you to do a three month probationary period. It's quite usual and it won't count towards your employment history so you can start to apply for mortgages within nine months of starting that job.

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

my answers

Agree with them all.

I took a quick look at the test and I thought the suggested headlines sounded as if they were written by a non-native speaker.

'Fisherman falls victim to a shark attack' should be 'Fisherman falls victim to shark attack'. Headlines frequently omit articles.

'Boat owner alarms police about a huge shark' is completely wrong. You notify the police, or raise the alarm. You could have, 'Boat owner alerts police to presence of huge shark.' If he alarms the police, it means he frightens them. In that case you could say 'Police alarmed by boat owner's sighting of huge shark.' or something similar.

Law / Advice needed on access rights and alimony payments regarding my Polish daughter [28]

move to poland to see my daughter

Regardless of the visa/residency complications, you should only consider moving to Poland if you can find a job there first or you have a lot of money and can support yourself for a while until you can earn a living. There is virtually no social welfare system in Poland, not compared to the UK and you could literally end up living on the street unless you have a few thousand zloty a month to pay rent and bills and buy food. You will also have to pay child support and the courts here don't accept 'I have no job, sorry I can't pay'.

The other problem is that even if you succeed in moving to Poland your ex may not allow you to see your child. It's quite common for Polish mothers to prevent the father from having contact with the child, once the relationship breaks up, even if there is a court order that the father has access rights. It takes time, perseverance and a lot of money to get it enforced.

The best option for you is to try and stay on good terms with the mother and come to Poland for a visit, not to live permanently and make sure that you keep records of any money you send for your child's support. Never give cash, always make sure that it's a bank transfer made out to your ex, and reference it in the transfer title as a child support payment.

Food / How is this herring product typically served? [74]

British English uses greasy in the very context I meant.

You're a typical Pole, telling a native speaker that they're wrong :)) I'm not using 'Irish' English.

The Oxford Dictionary defines grease as 'Animal fat used or produced in cooking.' Oil on the other hand is defined as 'Any of various viscous liquids which are insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents and are obtained from animals or plants.'

Native English speakers often make subtle distinctions in their use of words that may have a broadly similar meaning.

Who wrote the text book? Greasy is not a taste; it's a texture and nobody chooses greasy food. The word greasy has negative connotations in everyday English usage. People may enjoy oily foods. Indeed 'oily fish' is a term used for certain categories of fish such as sardines or mackerel but greasy fish would mean fried fish that has been cooked in too much fat and is soggy and revolting :))
