News / What will Britain's Labor Coup mean for Poland? [100]

Both parties realise the migrant situation is a problem that's not going to be easily solved.

Brexit all over again.... people who don't want a solution will never find a solution.

Dont' pay attention to the rhetoric pay attention to actions.

What actions by either problem would indicate that they think the migrant situation is a problem?

Life / Clothes and Fashion Polish style - then, now whenever! [25]

Very much the second half of the decade.

The four young women in the picture Atch posted look to me to be from 1969-72 (most likely 70-71) but that's American time and there could have been a temporal mismatch.

Those are definitely more 70s colors more muted earthy tones rather than bright mod colors... influenced a little by the hippy look but less busy

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

your stalinist grandpa

take a chill pill... call it whatever you want but don't insult those with different taste...

why are so many people here unable to disagree in a cordial fashion?

checking this forum is often like stepping into a pen full of rabid ducks....

It's still called the Warsaw Uprising...

Like I said.... on the internet Uprising is used about 4 times as often as Rising... and the trend is clearly toward Uprising. Rising is still acceptable for those who really, really prefer it (or don't mind sounding a bit old fashioned) but there's no need to insult those that prefer the more common name.

Those who haven't been granted asylum have to leave.

How many did the UK deport in 2023? 2022?

not a 'desire for open borders' though

It's called the tip of the spear...

main issues in the election were housing, cost of living and the NH

To do anything about those you need a good tax base.... and those arriving in the UK aren't going to help that.

Hmm... but doesn't this 'up' in 'uprising' sound horribly redundant?

What does 'po' add in powstanie?

Uprising is a frozen lexical unit that describes a rebellion, rising is a polysemous lexical unit with several different possible meanings. for Polish people the chances of confusion with 'rising' are minimal to non-existent.... for non-Polish speakers 'the Warsaw Rising' could refer to almost anything from the founding of the city to a particularly prosperous period....

the words are interchangeable in English

Though not in American.

Where did you pull that one from.

Reality in dinghies....

Neither support open borders even within Europe

Don't pay attention to what they say... pay attention to what they do. What are the chances of any of those arriving in dinghies ever being forced to leave?

To date, no-one has come up with a credible solution

Becuase both major parties are united in their desire for open borders..... (which means less and less services for tax payers because you can't expand the welfare classes forever).

Interestingly... there's this from Denmark.... MENA (Middle East/North African) immigrants work at lower rates than all other categories....

How is migration by them remotely sustainable?

x.com/jonatanpallesen/status/1809243561503711663

They survive on welfare (and petty crime) at the cost of the rest of society....

Again.... how is this sustainable?

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

my education on you works! Ha!!!!

Not education... Rising has always sounded wrong to me because it was so ambiguous. That hasn't changed. If anything it just goes stronger since it's more and more out of sync with modern usage.

It's like people who say: "It would be difficult for her to overcome really her bad habits." or "It would be difficult for her really to overcome her bad habits."

Technically those are grammatically correct but they sound stilted and awkward compared to the more natural: "It would be very difficult for her to really overcome her bad habits."

Warsaw Rising = archaic and a bit awkward (because of the ambiguity)

Warsaw Uprising = more idiomatic (because of the lack of ambiguity).

"Warsaw rising" = 127,000 ghits

"Warsaw uprising" = 673,000 ghits

wikipedia:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warsaw_Uprising

"Rising" is technically correct but semantically ambiguous while "Uprising" is much clearer and more in line with modern usage.

Language / Cult statements in the Polish language [31]

I like this one better: "Klient w krawacie jest mnie awanturący się" (A customer in a tie is less argumentive).

nb 'argumentive' is a non-standard word but it nicely echoes the non-standard 'awanturący się' used by "Pani Wonka"

Don`t be stupid. You don`t need to add Up to the Rising coz Rising is always Up! hahahaha

Actually Warsaw Rising has always sounded wrong... and doesn't suggested rebellion against an occupying force* while Uprising does.

Warsaw Rising sounds like Wstanie warszawskie.... kind of wrong...

*it could also could be a political movement or an artistic renaissance among other possibilities....

Study / Which is better, Nicolaus Copernicus Medical University or Wroclaw Medical University? [12]

I can't say anything intelligent about the universities in questions, but between the cities...

The old town of Toruń is lovely but there's not much else going on except for being the capital of a conservative political movement within the Catholic church.

Wrocław is about three times the population of Toruń with much easier land connections to other countries. Wrocław will also have more foreigners and a much more international vibe (if that's important) and a lot more to do in terms of entertainment and recreation (yeah med students don't have a lot of time for that but that means you want to make the chances you do have count).

News / Austria's swing to the far right on Poland? [229]

National Rally was leading in the first round of parliamentary elections

According to Peter Zeihan even a huge victory by Le Pen would only affect domestic policy....

And the establishment has only itself to blame..... Denmark, full of very smart people, adjusted migration policy to something closer to what citizens wanted and the 'far right' there dried up and blew away... but the governments of so many other countries are unable or unwilling to follow suit and that just helps Le Pen (and putain).

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 3 [818]

have to pull down on a handle which opens up somewhere to deposit the clothes, p

Same in Poland but people tend to overstuff them (the stuff in them isn't collected often) and so they get so full they can't be closed properly. Then people leave the clothes in bags next to it....

Food / Polish cakes made in Poland [115]

Americans refer to twaróg as Farmers' Cheese.

One of many names along with Dutch cheese, curd cheese, pot cheese.... though it's not that popular/common.

I've also seen russian tvorog used in English.

Travel / Poles as tourists in foreign countries [93]

Charming and poetic country, .... hospitable and kind-hearted people

I can't relate.... they don't want freedom.... they want to drag others under the same repressive yolk they accept..... there might be some nice individuals but overall..... nope.

News / THE ARMY OF POLAND - THE REALITY [493]

under the oppresive regime in their country.

Exactly..... at what time have russians ever not lived under oppression? That's a big part of russian culture.

I know too many Russians personally to believe your "bloodthirsty, humiliation-inflicting beasts" theory.

You know some nice individuals.... all cultures produce some nice individuals.... not all cultures are obsessed with oppressing other cultures, not all cultures have known nothing but tyranny (and are not bothered by it).

Peeling off some individual writers or music you like from the history of domestic and foreign repression isn't really appreciating the culture.... (in the soci-cultural sense of the word).
