Food / Polish food vs Ukrainian food [31]

Polish people adopted Ukrainian dishes or cooking techniques since the arrival of refugees?

Not directly though maybe indirectly... a lot of pierogi places with Ukrainian workers have opened up and some stores for Ukrainians (who had been an established presence in for years before the war).

I noticed a different way of making pierogi though I don't know if it's national or commercial or what...

The way I was familiar with the dough is rolled out into a sfoglia (large sheet) and a glass is used to make round pieces to which stuffing as added and then it's closed by hand.

The way I've seen in one place with Ukrainians in the (open) kitchen... there's a very large lump of dough and the maker pinches off a piece and pats it flat and round (almost like very small mexican tortillas) when there's a nice stack of them the cook adds stuffing to them and closes them by hand.

My favorite (Polish) commercial pierogies are made from sfoglias....

Anyone up on comparative pierogi techniques or pierogi recipes?

News / Is NORD STREAM dangerous for Poland's natural enviroment? [540]

What?
Did we declare war on Germany?

Germany had _heavily_ invested in the idea that russia had matured enough to join the world community of normal countries that don't invade each other. That is had progressed beyond being a gas station run by the mafia....

russia indicated that neither of those was true

And as gumishu points out all of Germany's diplomatic soft power (which it had spent decades investing in) would have dried up and blown away like dust in the wind if it simply enabled russian ethnocide of Ukraine.

It was kind of an own goal since some countries (Poland, the Baltics, Finland maybe) had been warning Germany that russia cannot be trusted to do the non-insane thing....

Modern Germany is ruled by Lilliputians.

Better than the psychotic criminals running russia...

russia had a choice.... act like a normal county and use its massive resources to build up the country or to try to steal another country's wealth and it chose.... badly.

Otherwise this is going to become incredible damaging for Ukraine

N2 was incredibly damaging to Germany.... the whole idea was for russia to be able to supply Germany in an uninterrupted fashion while it tried to rebuild its soviet crapitude.

I thought that was incredibly obvious (from the russian point of view.... convincing Germany that it wouldn't be affected by russian military aggression... and if Schroeder and Merkel had their way it might have worked.....).

Food / Help with Polish recipe - Żurek soup? [25]

I mean the home version sold in bottles... not the final product.

Looking it up on google it looks like the Romanian equivalent is just the juice (and apparently some people drink it)

Same for the barszcz biały of course but with wheat flour.

I've never seen it but apparently the white version used to be a staple of Romanian cooking and old ladies made it at home and then sold it to neighbors or passers by.

I remember after Poland joined the EU it seemed to disappear from vegetable stands (it wasn't displayed but if you asked for it they'd reach under the counter).

Now it's mostly commercial brands.

Looks like raisins... which I like by themselves though I don't much like them as ingredients in dishes.....

History / Crazy 1990s in Poland - transition from communism to capitalism - stories [111]

national elections in 1993. I swallowed that bitter pill and didn`t call them homo sovieticuses yet

SLD was a single party and the opposition to them was fractured and tended to bicker among themselves rather than govern. SLD had the kind of structure and internal discipline to function like a western party (once freed of the need to pay lip service to the soviets).

in 1995 Wałęsa had no real record to run on besides alienating almost everyone with his constant need for undignified arguments...

Kwaśniewski acted more like a president and that's why he won.

Sad truth: The person that led the revolution is generally not someone you want to be in charge afterward.

Food / Help with Polish recipe - Żurek soup? [25]

Perhaps this is what Poles know as "zurek".

No.The distinctive feature of żurek is the use of liquid from fermented grains (żurek is usually made from fermented rye flour known as żur). Bottles are sold in stores. You pour the clear liquid at the top into the soup (and then you can fill the bottle with water and in a few days have more żur). the idea of serving it in a bowl made of bread is more of an affectation than something people do on a regular basis. it's more common in restaurants than in homes.

AFAICT from the wikipedia article it (and/or similar soups from fermented flours) only occurs East of Germany

If you use wheat instead of rye you have 'barszcz biały' (white borsht) which is associated with Easter in many parts of Poland.

bottle of żurek.

"Graupensuppe" is called krupnik in Polish

I was going to say I looked up pictures of 'Graupensuppe' and thought it looks much closer to krupnik than to żurek.... thought it had too many other ingredients. The best krupnik is made with just a few.

Polonia / Should I visit Portugal? [35]

I've never understood that... mentality.... the same way I don't understand people going on foreign vacations with infants.... don't they have grandparents who would like to spend some time with them?

News / A Polish Feminist Found in a Forest [133]

So women over 30 are "disposable" then? :D

No.... men, especially young men, are disposable (from an evolutionary point of view) and men after 50 or so are also pretty disposable. Women aren't disposable until extreme old age.

Almost all human societies prioritize the safety and health of young women of child-bearing age (the bottleneck of human reproduction).

Take it up with mother nature.

hy are you talking to me about this, maf...?? :))

You seemed confused about why most people don't want women in direct combat roles.

If you get it, then great!

plenty of women were deployed to war zones for months

There are lots and lots of videos on twitter of russian soldiers getting killed. Now imagine women in those videos.... is that progress?

Most men are hard-wired to respond to distressed women (under thirtyish) differently than distressed men.

Women around combat have usually been in supporting roles away from the front line. Even Israel found it necessary to not deploy women in fighting grunt roles.

Women and men are, at time, not interchangeable and direct combat is one of those times.

I'd much rather have men as cannon fodder than women (it would be nice if no one had to be cannon fodder but until then....).

History / Time for Slavic Commonwealth around Poland as center [223]

You mean the child of African migrants who killed three white children? Starmer could care less....

If you mean native UK populations opposed to children of migrants killing locals... he is on the case and ready to jail as many white people as he has to.

bonus: father of the killer may have been one of the killers in the Rwanda genocide... so.... immigration works! the UK's diversity is surely its strength!

didn't know you were an anti-New Deal, anti-Constitutionalist Trumpist.

Project much? I just said Trump and Vance were the Dumbnamic Duo and that Trump is uninterested in policy....

I no longer live in the US so I won't vote, but even if I were I could not, in good conscience, vote for either Harris (a DEI hire who was never even in a single primary) or Trump (a blowhard hasbeen).

US politics have devolved into low third world comedy... and picking the 'lesser of two evils' wont' change that.

choose Walz as her running mate

cosy with China.... set up an informer line during covid lockdowns.... did nothing while racial scammers turned a drug overdose by a career criminal into a 'racial reckoning'....

Harris and Watz are the Gruesome Twosome.... not that Trump and Vance are really any better, Trump doesn't care about policy and Vance come from a dysfunctional background that he's clearly not over the Dumbnamic Duo

The supposedly most powerful country on Earth can't come up with better election choices..... democracy is in retreat in most of the world, rather like the run up to WWII...

Migration has now become the number one political issue all over Europe and in the USA too.

Migration is completely ignored by mainstream parties in most Western European countries.... no matter who Brits vote for the boats are just going to increase until the UK opts out of dysfunctional outdated agreements.
