News / Future of Polish-Ukrainian relations [669]

Hey, Maf started "yaying" first, not me.

You said Bobko and you have similar attitudes towards Ukrainians... you think he cares about the Holodomor or Bucha? All the evidence is that he blames Ukrainians for resisting russification (and Poland for helping Ukraine)

I wanted to see how similar your attitudes are.

News / Will PiS be happy if AfD wins elections in Germany? [1440]

fascism, something notoriously hard to defin

My idea is that if you can't define it then it's not a useful term for political discussion.

About 95% of the time I stop listening when someone starts prattling about 'fascist X'.

Almost 10 years ago I completely disengaged from the idea of 'racism' and racist' since most of the time they seemed to be used in similar undefineable ways. Homophobic and transphobic aren't far behind.

Define it and we can talk about it. Can't define it then stop talking about it (except to find a definition).

Probably the term is no longer even needed since authoritarian and totalitarian already exist.

News / Future of Polish-Ukrainian relations [669]

If one can't draw conclusions from the past, then there isn't much hope for his future

What conclusions can be drawn from the past about russian intentions toward Poland?

I definitely think there needs to be reconciliation between Poland and Ukraine though the midst of a war for survival is not the most opportune....

calling individual members of this party fascists

How is that defined? Or does it mean "mean people I don't like!"?

Technically the definition of fascism that I learned long ago is private ownership of the means of production which, however, remain under government control. This is contrasted with capitalism (private ownership and control) and socialism (government ownership and control).

Life / Do colored immigrants in Poland function better than in Western countries? [295]

I have not heard of Indian slaves, only Africans.

In large areas the natives died from European diseases they had no immunity to.

In South America in the Andes there was something like slavery (more like russian serfs than chattle slavery).

In North America there weren't enough (lower population density).

Slavery by Spanish, French and Portuguese was far more extensive and exploitative than slavery by the British (or their successors).

Travel / Bus or Street Car in Warsaw [12]

Is it better to use a bus or street car to get around town in Warsaw?

It depends on where you are and where you're going. Some places are bus only others are streetcar only others are a mix. The same ticket works on both so it's not a problem. There's also the metro I'm not sure if the same ticket works on it (it used to but I haven't been in W-wa recently).

I generally prefer streetcars but to get to the old town you'll need a bus (also to Łazienki or Wilanów)

Life / Do colored immigrants in Poland function better than in Western countries? [295]

Another conspiracy theory?

He might be thinking of the fact that IIRC Colombus landed in Hispanola (island of current DR and Haiti) and not anywhere currently part of the US. Worth noting that 'America' has different meanings, the US or the entirety of North and South America (in Spanish it only has the latter meaning in some languages it depends on context).

Life / West-East life in Poland? [45]

In many ways, it's a shame they built the place; it was better to use either Ostbahn or Zoo.

I used to love Zoo! It had a bad rep after that book but when I was there it wasn't bad and it was right in the middle of town and close to the Europa center (the water clock was one of my favorite Berlin landmarks).

Ostbahn is.... ost..... but Hauptbahnhof is just a weird Escher nightmare seemingly designed to be as uncomfortable and hard to navigate as possible....

Food / Traditional Polish Foods [141]

I once made a Red Velvet Cake

I don't think of that as overly sweet...

If you want to go straight to a sugar coma, try Sicilian cassatina, it's like 5 pounds of sugar in a 3 pound sack...

Genealogy / Looking for Polish Spelling of Last Name [17]

Shetakowski (my English phonetic spelling) to Sierak.

Probably was Sierakowski and shortened to Sierak, most Americans would hear Sierak- as Shetak- or Shedak- the Polish r between vowels sounds like t in city.... the name comes from a kind of outer garment worn by peasants... The name Sierak is still found in Poland.

Life / Why is women-hatred and stereotyping so popular in Poland? [181]

This story (about a guy called Mateusz Jach) freaked me out a bit:

I've seen pictures of the farm.... there is no way his family didn't know.... they all belong in prison (and he should be executed - there are times when capital punishment is the only one that fits).

I doubt a bowl of soup is going to do much damage.

I've had it (szczaw in Polish) a few times... I liked it because it reminded me of greens which aren't really a thing in most of Europe (turnip greens, mustard greens and collard greens are all eaten on a regular basis in the US South).

getting a thrill off it.

There was one trans identifying guy on twitter who was _stunned_ when he learned that women do not get sexually aroused when they put on lipstick or a dress.... the idea that he had a paraphilia was just starting to dawn....

You just don't like people being trans.

I'm a live and let live kind of guy so I'm okay with the HSTS's who are far less of a problem than the AGs (and far less in number) and I'm fine with more masculine women butching it up if that's what they want.

But surgical interventions need to stop for anyone under about 25 (and need to be preceded by years of counseling).

And men need to stay out of women's spaces.

And I'm not going to pretend that Bruce Jenner (or Eddie Izzard) are women.

And I'm not going to memorize 56 different pronouns.

I'm actually close to JK Rowling in almost all of this.... and watching her destroy the Scottish 'hate speech' laws in real time was a thing of rare beauty.

What does that tell you about the movement?

When I was discovering Gender Critical twitter I found out many of the most outspoken critics of the trans agenda were gay men and lesbians (many of whom realize they might have been targets had it been around when they were younger and/or might have fallen for the chance to become 'straight'...

Many women don't seem.to see how important this is, I agree.

It's framed as a question of tolerance and many people think it's just about being nice...For a long time I didn't understand the radfems but but when you look closer there is a lot of horrific stuff going on in the name of 'trans acceptance'...

Apart from the autogynephiles forcing people to play along with their kink a lot of mind-blowingly horrific things are going on with the commercialization of trans "medicine"...

short version: young, vulnerable people are fast-tracked into irreversible invasive procedures that almost always have 'complications' that require more expensive invasive procedures and lifetime medication to deal with the effects. the 'doctors' seem to be extraordinarily unqualified and often ghost their patients when the entirely predictable complications arrive.

exulansic (formerly trans who got out of the cult) does invaluable work examining the grisly aftermatch of the (most often botched) surgeries... it's really heartbreaking and not for the squeamish... and as bad as the interventions that males get (like vaginoplasty) the interventions women get are far, far worse.....

None of the three are women. Two are autogynephiles who've found a way to make everyone participate in their kink and the other is simply mentally disturbed...

nobody's ever questioned her gender.

Division of sports is not by gender (culturally specific ideas about the sexes) but by the immutable biological category of sex.

Moving forward, the categories should be:

female only (with chromosonal and other tests when necessary)

open (no testing necessary)

'trans' identifying males (like William "Lia" Thomas) should not be allowed to compete against females (except as novelty entertainment events)

Cases of intersex people (like the ZA runner or Algerian boxer) should be handled on an individual basis... they can enter the open category or the female category if they pass anatomical/chromosonal tests.

Food / Bigos Recipe [183]

discussion about the Polish dish called Bigos.

so? I still maintain the name 'hunter's stew' is not a good translation (if you want to translate it) I usually use Polish food names and if someone asks I give an explanation of what it is rather than try to use a translated name that's confusing and misleading....

Food / Bigos Recipe [183]

I dislike the name Hunters' Stew

I dislike that name because, to me, it doesn't imply something that hunters eat but rather the products of the hunt (boar, venison, wild birds...) and bigos usually does not have game in it. Also, for Americans, stew implies chunks of meat with potatoes, carrots and onions (among other things) but not cabbage.

If I had to give it an English name it might be 'stewed cabbage' since that's what it is.

Interestingly, there's a sort of similar dish in Romania 'varză călită' 'braised cabbage' often eaten with polenta (called mamaliga in Romania)

Maybe powidła? I think I've heard of that in bigos.

Life / A Muslim Arab in Poland who loves Polish KABANOS & VODKA [20]

you get wool from sheep

Also milk for cheese....

pigs couldn't be used for anything else than meat

And pigs are more.... convenient than cows or sheep that either need land to graze on or preserved silage or roughage over the winter... a big part of a pig's diet is either table scraps or parts of plants that people can't eat. I remember a BBC documentary on how women in the UK coped with WWII shortages... one was a 'pig club' were four or five households fatten up a pig on kitchen refuse and then they all get some of the harvested meat.....

he right translation? Pork schnitzel?

IME English speakers living in Poland don't translate a lot of food items.... usually they just say schabowy (maybe turning sch into sk) if I have to explain it to someone I just say breaded pork chop (though in the US pork chops are not usually pounded out and often fried without breading or are baked).
