History / Polish treasures in Sweden? [18]

settled at the time of the Vienna congress 1815.

Indeed. And even if it hadn't been, most of the items have now been in Sweden longer than they ever were in Poland.

Work / Is it difficult to make a living playing Soccer (football) in Poland? [54]

Can someone tell me what I need to know, please???...

There are a few threads here about football in PL, and some useful info on the league's wiki page.

Have you made contact with a football agent who recruit for Polish teams? Football is thriving here.

History / Churchill and Poland [120]

Arnold Leese a true British patriot

He was a nazi sympathiser.

But what would anyone else do in in Churchill's shoes?

I read recently that Churchill wanted to do something, however the military advised him that it was impossible to take on the Soviet Union and win.

Real Estate / Websites to find an apartment for rent in Poland? [30]

You cannot filter too many things

One benefit of Gumtree is that you can filter out agents (though see post 24, above).

OLX seems to be getting more and more popular; the key is (as with Gumtree) to concentrate on the more recent ads.

Indeed, or more like the post was put up as a free advert pretending to be a 'recommendation' by him. It's very easy to find a flat in PL. Gumtree is usually best, and their various rivals are ok too. Even just asking around is likely to find you one (there are a LOT of people in PL who have a flat to let).

One thing to watch out for is lettings agents (who charge a fee) pretending to be private owners. It's always worth googling the phone number in the advert just in case.

News / Scandals, conflicts, tensions, arguments - real life examples from Poland [543]

We joined that stupidity immediately when capitalism was introduced in early 1990s.

There's a lot of sense in it. It makes sure that the assistant rings up cash payments in the till to get the change, rather than just trousering the money. It's also useful for online shopping, when people specify price ranges in a search engine.

Plus of course tees the subliminal effect of making something look cheaper than it is.

did they finally realize how irrelevant this place is and pull him?

He was begging them for a job for ages (there are reasons not to employ him); and now has one.

Did he/she admit to being a paid PiS troll ?

We know people in common in real life. His new work isn't a secret particularly.

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

If I'd seen the Double-Deckers and Crunchies I'd probably have bought the lot. Since there weren't any at Młociny, maybe someone did just that.

Tunnocks

Kuchnia Świata at Arcadia has Tunnock's, both milk and plain ;-)

Don't forget lamb, proper centre loin lamb cops on the bone

I dream of Barnsley Chops, nothing that exists in PL comes anywhere near them.

I noted the following products:

Similar to the range I saw on Wednesday in the one at Galeria Młociny. They did have Mini-cheddars and Twiglets which made happiness complete...

And yes, Cadbury's Fingers are a joy...

Life / Satirical cartoons about Poland and Poles [17]

I was pleased to see this week that there's a new rainbow erected right in the centre of Warsaw. Anyway, here's a satirical cartoon from the master himself:

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

Warsaw Rising 1944, the Battle for the Old Town,

I knew someone who was part of that. He was a teen when it happened. Sadly he died (in his 70s) about 15 years ago. A very distinguished man. He was a Righteous Among the Nations, a newspaper editor back in the 70s, the founder of a major charity and part of KOR.

They do stock the original Bonios

Mine liked Bonio, Really easy to make at home, basic biscuit dough (try using smalec) and (low-salt) beef stock. A bit of aniseed makes the doggies like them even more ;-)

I bring the powder from the U.K., though Kuchnie Świata sometimes have it. Once I bought some (not Colman's) ready-made to bring to PL and noticed on the label that it was made there. Just a shame we don't sell it in Poland instead of that insipid Sarepska etc.

What a load of old crap

Really? Someone I know was raving about the one in Gocław. She mentioned marmite (yuk) and mint sauce. A photo I saw of the shelves had mostly crisps and sweets, and there were various online comments from newish expats/migrants raving over it. Worth a look when I'm back next week, but if it's as crap as you say I may not buy anything. The food section at Poundland was only ever good for cheap sweets anyway.

Thanks. I just remembered the name of the shop, Dealz. And Google says there's a new one near my home!

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

A lot of people have been raving over a new chain of shops (there's one in the new mall by Rondo Wiatraczna) that sells a lot of British food, mostly in jars and packets. I don't remember the name, however apparently they belong to either Poundland or Poundworld (whichever one didn't go bust recently).

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

It was first time I couldn't eat piece of pizza and when they weren't looking, I tossed it out:(

For me, that was at Da Grasso, a newish chain in PL. I don't mind Telepizza, though some people hate them. There is good pizza to be found in PL, though few and far between.

@Joker
If you ever see Botton Village cheese over there (made at a community of people with Downs Syndrome in North Yorkshire) it's really worth trying. They've been making it for decades. It's expensive but excellent, and I think is exported overseas.

Especially grilled. Ser Koryciński is quite good, and there's more of it in the bigger supermarkets now. It's a little softer than most U.K. cheeses.

Poland makes cheddar now, a passable one on a par with a supermarket own-brand. No Farmhouse Cheddar unfortunately, however we make that at home.

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

I was offered a piece of pizza in Poland and I swear the cheese was made out of plastic.

It's at best 'pizza cheese' and at worst, it's "non-dairy pizza topping", sometimes called "cheese analogue".

I miss Lancashire cheese (the tangy kind), Coverdsle cheese (made near to where I'm from) and Shropshire Blue (a 70s invention but good).

Yes. Stilton is still made in a strictly controlled region. Bass Ale? I haven't seen that for years, however a quick look on Wikipedia says it's still made.
