News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

However, I doubt people in Bieszczady will care about 500+ if they know that there's no chance of getting an ambulance in an emergency.

I sincerely doubt that anyone, not only those people in Bieszczady, would prefer a chance of getting an ambulance in an emergency which is only likely to happen over a 500-zloty payout to the hand every month which is sure to happen.

As the saying goes - lepszy wróbel w garści niż gołąb na dachu!

Is it? I thought Poland was behind San Escobar as SanEscobar is very high on that list

@Atch [who the hell has taken away the quote function? Don't tell me it was Minnie!]
Where did you get that press freedom index from? What year does it refer to? What year does the previous index refer to?

who is the First Secretary of the Party these days?

There is no First Secretary these days in Poland. JK is Chairman of the party. So I keep up my demand to the mods for issuing a warning to you for abusing official titles.

to drive this thread off topic and away from discussing PIS's mis-deeds

If these are mis-deeds or not is subject to opinion. These are mis-deeds in your eyes, but they are "deeds" in Polly's eyes. You have surely heard of 'good change', haven't you?

The Dear Leader, First Secretary Kaczynski

Although you may be justified for calling Jarosław Kaczyński with the title of "Dear Leader", you are evidently wrong when calling him with the title of "First Secretary". As this title is fake and calling him as such amounts to lying, I would like to appeal to the mods to issue a warning to you (or even suspend you for using incorrect titles).

Sorry about that. As you know I am the world's No. 1 computer/web dunce and consummate anti-gadgetarian.

Don't worry, it was just a friendly rebuke, but s-Notty, quite surprisingly, got very offended by it which made me truly amazed since it was none of his bussiness.

Anyway, I am a great admirer of your "propagandist" English-language style, indeed. And I'm sure this is something that strenghtens your arguments in those ever going verbal battles on the PF and thus infuriates your adversaries very much.

do you truly believe the story-book verison of "the new democratic Poland" -- the way GW has traditonally presented it?

I hope to answer this later on when I have some more time since it is more than than just a 'black and white' picture only, in my view.

"Gay Lefty Sissy Tribune"

If anyone needs to be warned, it is you, s-Notty. If I remeber correctly, you have not only been warned, but suspended twice on this forum. Your strong attraction to Putin as a Russian macho may give you away as a sissy and the frequent use of the word 'gay' in so many of your posts may indicate surpressed feelings and desires which have to manifest themselves in one way or another.

Generally, you invoke sex much too often in the posts unrelated to sex to think not that you may have problems with this sphere of life.

It was shadowy in the sense

What's the reason for publishing the same post twice? And this was not accidental since the second post appeared three hours after the first one. It does look like propaganda of the PRL period. Comrade Gierek said this, comrade Gierek did that, comrade Gierek ... and so on.

Let's be serious about it: the PF is not a "Trybuna Ludu". I think that posters who deliberately perform such an action should get a warning.

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

Jacek Świat, from Wrocław, has been accused of molesting a 8 year old boy by the father of the child.

I have retrieved that article of SE to find out what it is all about and discovered that you have conveniently ommited the whole context of the story. The father of the child is currently fighting yet another battle in court with the mother of the child (the couple is divorced). The mother is an assistant to Jacek Świat who is an MP. She claims she has no private relation with her employer whereas the father says the child has reported his mother lying naked in bed with naked Mr Świat at the time of this incident and consenting to all this. Mr Świt says the accusations of the father are all fake.

So your reporting doesn't tell lies, but says only half (or even less) of the truth.

Travel / Flying from USA to Poland in June - Will Visa now be required??? [31]

It all depends how many Americans are actually willing to go to Poland and what percentage of those would be deterred from going by a slight inconvenience.

Most of them would be the Americans of Polish origin willing to visit the Old Country rather than regular tourists. This also seems to me to be a song of the past. I can see a lot of Europeans in Warsaw, many of them being Spaniards, but few, if any, Americans.

Travel / Flying from USA to Poland in June - Will Visa now be required??? [31]

it's not Poland Johnny. It's the EU.

Now and again you can hear angry voices in Poland asking "When will the US abolish their visa requirement for us Poles since they, Americans may come here without a visa?". And before every US presidential election the Polonia in the US can hear from almost every candidate "Yes, I'm going to do something about that when I become President of the United States". And then we proceed to the next election with this history repeating itself again and again.

The angry mood increased even more when the US lifted the visa requirement for the citizens of the Czech Republic (and maybe some other central European countries), but then things returned to normal to the point that I don't even remember if the Polish press reported anyting candidate Trump said on this matter.

The European Parliament isn't happy with the fact that certain EU countries (including Poland) have to get a visa for travel to America but Americans, under present EU law don't require a visa for holidays in the EU.

But you see, Ms Atch, that was exactly the case before Poland joined the EU or the Schengen zone. The consecutive Polish governments tolerated this unequality allowing the Americans to come to Poland without a visa, while the Poles had to apply for an American visa. The EU continues in allowing this ever after Poland joined the Schengen zone. So this is an absolute disgrace and you simply cannot blame a "pigheaded Polish government" for this. If the Schengen zone is supposed to be a unitary area and the Americans are given a free hand to divide this area into sub-zones, then the Polish government should be brave enough to hit the table with the fist and say "We require the Americans to get a visa for entering Poland if the Polish must get a visa to enter the US. And **** the Schengen zone, if it can't exercise the proper rules!".

No, I meant if someone is going to spend $3k to $5k for a vacation to Poland for two weeks to visit a couple of tourist attractions may be swayed to go some place else that does not require the hassle of a visa.

This is the reason why the Polish governemnts were so lax about the reciprocality with the Americans. Except that you should replace "tourist" with "business people".

But he rambled on for an hour doing what he does best: no programme, no constructive ideas, just pure, unadulterated PiS-bashing.

But this is his right executed under the umbrella of democracy. As a member of parliament he is entitled to such an action. What did you really expect ? That our Great Leader Jarosław Kaczyński would step up and tell him: we don't like you here, we don't like PiS-bashing, you are speaking for too long and talking rubbish and if you don't stop right now, I will call the police to take you out of the House! Don't be silly, Polly. These things are perfectly normal and you should know it having been brought up in Amerca.

all is well and the good changes can proceed apace,

To support Pol3's claim, here is a short poem. The poem is in Polish, so it will loose in translation to English, thus I'm quoting it in Polish as it reflects pretty well what Polonius3 is telling us about the'good change'.

To wie każdy ziomal z mego PGR-u,
że czeka nas świetlana przyszłość z Kaczyńskim u steru!
Na każde dziecko po 500 dają,
a za szlugi i wino akcyzy nie podwyższają!
Kraj ten słoniną i wódką płynie! Jarosław jest Bogiem,
tak twierdzą wszyscy w mej gminie!

Language / How well do Polish people understand Slovak? [88]

Because people from Split never sincerely felt to be same people, as people from Zagreb (real ethnic Croatia).

Kajkavian dialect or something is spoken by the people of Zagreb and further north, right? This dialect retained many West Slavic language features after these Slavic people of Panonia had been separated by Hungarian tribes from the Slavic mainland in the north. Unlike the Serbian language or the Dalmatian dialects, their own dialect was never influenced by the Turkish or the Italian language.

News / Polish MEP Korwin-Mikke's latest outrage, insulting women [216]

I wonder if Janusz Korwin-Mikke would have been punished if he said that men are less intelligent than women. Given the equal rights status assumed for both sexes in the European Parliament, he should have been punished as well. But I sincerely doubt it would have happened. Everyone would just have laughed at him and then pass to mind their own bussiness.

Off-Topic / Being a Slav: a blessing or a curse? [199]

The guy seems to be a Serbian married to an Irish woman (maybe it's Crnogorac himself!)

This is pretty likely and if so, it's good to have him on board!

Words "bran" meaning to defend and "vran" meaning crow, black are actually related and are both derived from the sound that crows make. The sound that crow makes is something that sounds like craaw, graaw, wraaw, raaw.

Why 'crow' should be related to 'defend' (vran <--> bran) I don't understand. 'Vran' (bird) is black, but what's the relation of being black to 'defend' or 'being protected'?

Btw, the Polish corresponding words are: 'wrona' for a bird and 'bronić' for 'defending'.

Off-Topic / Being a Slav: a blessing or a curse? [199]

And the following language similarity between Irish and the Slavic languages is astounding:
Irish:
creasa - flint fire
tinechreasach - sparkling
[Why is there CH in 'tinechreasach', but C in 'creasa'? Any difference in pronounciation?]

Serbian:
kresati - to smash two stones against each other in such a way that their sides slide over each other making sparks. to do the same with fire steel and a stone. to make sparks.

kres - fire steel, flint
kresivo - tinder

[In Polish: kresati - krzesać; kresivo - krzesiwo]

Maybe 'kresati' is just a proto-Indoeuropean word, so a kind of an equivalent should also exist in the Romanesque or the Germanic group of languages. The author doesn't discuss that, however]

rish Serbian Cultural and Linguistic parallels:

There's a link within the above post to a very detailed analysis:

A fascinating stuff, indeed, those links that you have provided. I have only read a tiny bit, but the discussion seems to me amateurish. There is no critical analysis of the facts provided, so in general all this can be classified as speculation. I am not saying everything there is untrue in it, but language similarities must be studied much more critically that the author does it there. For example, 'tabor' meaning 'military camp' in Serbian is also well known in Polish as a moving military or gypsy camp. But it may have some other origin than that coming from the Vinca people.

The I2 gene is undoubtedly growing in importance in explaining the origins and migrations of the European people. Have you seen my thread in which I presented an article claiming the language of the ancient Philistines to have been proto-Slavic in nature?

i stick with my view.you can use millions eloquent words to mak yourelvs more credible..still fanatism

Let's break it down for you step by step.

Ms Atch, after having read your interesting dissertation above (a lot of facts have been unknown to me) in which you have tried to inform gregy on the realities of the past world, I can only say that if gregy doesn't accept this as a fair and honest tale, we will be obliged to qualify him as nothing more than a male chauvinist.

Language / Grammar - difference between "jaki" and "co" in Polish language [43]

The phrase ought to have read "JakIEGO kolorU jest.....?"

'Jakiego koloru jest ta sukienka?' is an equivalent to 'W jakim kolorze jest ta sukienka?' or 'Jaki jest kolor tej sukienki?'. These three mean exactly the same.

Although I have read "resp." for "respectively" on more than one occasion in scientific journals and the like (written by native English speakers, I hasten to add),

This is my experience, too.

Language / Grammar - difference between "jaki" and "co" in Polish language [43]

"Proszę o chleb! - Jaki //ś// chleb?"

The 'ś' should be thrown away up there: - Jaki chleb? would be the question.

Also, you may be asked - Który chleb?, as there is always a limited range, as large as it may be, of the types of bread in the shop.

"Piękna sukienka! Który kolor jest?" = Stunning blouse! What color is it?

I guess you mean here : Piękna sukienka! W jakich jest (dostępna) kolorach? or W jakim ona jest kolorze?' if the prospective buyer is not sure of the colour. Btw, 'sukienka' isn't 'blouse' in my view.

The most recent hypothesis as outlined in the BBC series "The Celts: Blood, Iron and Sacrifice" recently shown on the "Polsat ViaSat History" channel in Poland is that the Celtic people were moving from the west of Europe to the east of Europe rather than vice versa as it is commonly believed.
