News / Poland - A True Bastion and Defender of Free Speech [250]

Incorrect, Johnny Reb! I was never unemployed, nor was I ever a flower power hippy,
but rather a New Deal Conservative Dem, and proud of it!

I rejected the Woodstock Era, still do, and was always the model of button-down Babbit-like
respectability on our college campus.

Ahemm, Meathead was a twenty-something, unemployed ex-hippy who
belonged to the flower power generation!

I am a late fifty-something product of older parents with Depression-Era, New Deal
values shaped by collective suffering as well as the Greatest Generation of WWII,
NOT by a bunch of Haight-Ashbury teens who got knocked up behind some cabbage
patch, buster.

History / Poles should apologise to Ukrainians first [395]

The Poles though were often seen more as accomplices to brutality rather than
methodical instigators of such crimes!

Had there been no German-sponsored Holocaust, Jedwabne and Kielce would never have
happened, as there would have been no leader to follow. Those Polish participants were
mimicking the Nazis, yet without that role model, I don't believe the Polish government would have
planned such an atrocity out of the badness of their hearts.

This is why it angers me so to read about "Polish Concentration Camps".

I'm no Meathead, but of the two, the show's
producer and head star, Carrol O'Connor, were
no fans of Archie, believe me. Face it, the
man was pitiful, much like the Curtwood Smith
character on "That 70's Show".

History / Why Poland achieved nothing at all? [69]

B.B. relax, don't have kittens, will ya? Mach dich doch nicht nass, Kinder!
Pawian as well. Kopernikus is a Pole to the Poles, but a German to the Germans,
same with his home town, Torun or Thorn? You pick.

Hey, the French claim Chopin, whilst he WAS born in Zelezowa Podolia,
and therefore Polish by birth:-) His whimsically passionate, ever capricious
themes though, e.g. his Etude in E flat, is pure, unadulterated Polish and can
bring tears to one's eyes.

Love / I want to marry a polish girl . I am in middle east now i am single [21]

Reminds me of that old TV joke about the man who advises that
his little girl date a young man who is forthright, yet demure, cultured,
yet with a practical side, straight on, yet with a kindly twinkle in his eye,
to which the man's best best friend reminds him, "Felix, it's against the law
to date your own daughter!"

Off-Topic / The Pope has officially approved the blessing of same-sex couples [60]

@MrGrunwald, are you speaking here perhaps of Mosaic vs. Talmudic Law?
@Rich, as always, I cannot grasp the meaning of what you're trying to say,
although knowing you, it must be something vile about me and hence embarrassing
about you.

The Pope is technically correct!
Who decides who lives whom or who should pray to G-d
other than the person themselves?

G-d hears ALL of our prayers. Pat Robertson ought to have been ex-communicated
when he once said to the crowd that "G-d doesn't hear the prayer of a Jew!"

To whom else would the late hate preacher have closed G-d's ears?? Jews, gays, Communists...,all non-Christian believers??
Absolutely shameful!!

So I guess that makes you a Pole rather than an American.

That's often the way it was, Alien.
Polish Jews were never as assimilated as, say, German or French Jews.
Anyway, there can never be a truly "universal" language, above all English,
as there still is no truly universal thinking system, thank the Lord!

There'll always be some sort of cross-cultural interference whenever two
interlocutors seek to communicate with one another in a language not their
own.

Interesting that a Polish-born Jew, Prof. Zamenhof, should have been the one
to envision a universal language.
